I'm sorry to hear that you're in the hospital. :( I'm not quite sure of info on this for you. But, can say that you are in a good place right now. Please keep us updated. Sending lots of hugs your way.

It's normal to be concerned when admitted to hospital, but you're in the best place for them to determine the cause and get the treatment to help you recover. Defimitely don't panic!

the symptoms you're describing could be a bowel obstruction. this s often treated with pain meds, iv fluids, and resting the bowel, but that's just a guess/ observation on my part. Hang in there and let us know how it goes - many of us know how tough it can be lying in a hospital bed waiting for answers. It's hard but you're in the right place to get help.

Sorry to hear you've been admitted. Like the other guys have said I know its horrible but at least you're in the right place and they will be trying their hardest to get you better. :) Get well soon!

you may be right. i now on day 3 no bm ty for replying

Sadly I've spent the past 18 months becoming my own private expert on small bowel obstructions :) n

On the other hand, as odd as this may sound, it could just be really severe constipation. That's happened to me as well once.

Have they done any tests or said anything yet? Maybe a CT scan?

Hang in there and let us know how it goes!

had a ct scan of kidneys looking for stones but was clear i presume a ct of bowel is different im burpingn passig wind does that fit a boockage critera ..im seeing doc in a few hours hopefully... just made a mistake of trying a lesser pain killer and now in agony but got to wait a few hours before they will give :(

If you have a partial blockage them you can definitely still pass wind, it can get through the smallest of spaces. Do you have any strictures that you know about?

With a partial, this is true, but if you are regularly passing wind it does indicate you don't have a full obstruction. That's actually good news!

And yes, a CT of the bowel is different than the kidneys. May or may not be done with contrast. The contrast is (usually) via IV though I've had them with an oral as well, though not when they suspect an obstruction.

went on fluids today and morphine seeing consultant in morning now everythings a blurr but pain free no bm today sounds strange can not feel my bowel - also had movicol . dr`s still want me to eat but surely if i blocked pain will get more as i eat? ive drove them mad today with my questions

Yes the pain could get worse but eating could also help to get things moving. Your doctors wouldnt allow you to eat if they thought it would cause harm. Start with small light meals and see how you go

hope so. im not to convinced they know wht they are doing...

i was told i need another bag of fluid but night shift said its notwritten up :ybatty:

but day shift left empty bag and me attached to machine..

now got ear plugs in as the machines beeping are driving me crazy.

roll on the mrphine so it becomes a fuzz

hospitals are full of sick people but you meet some really nice characters

Yeah they have a nasty habbit of doing that, I remember one time I was in the nurse chased down some poor junior to right fluids and IV painkillers up because I was nill by mouth until I got a CT scan 3 days later. They always leave my empty bags up too, but we were taught to do that if a patient needs more because it reminds the next shift that you need some form of drip.

The machines are horrible, they disconnected my morphine for a bit because there was a problem with my cannula, it bleeped for 3 hours until they replaced my cannula, so I really feel for you there.

I'm glad you're with some nice people. That can make hospital stays so much better!
I always get mothered by the other patients haha.

Keep us updated. Fingers crossed for you!!

Yeah, I can understand being mothered by the patients! Even though I haven't been admitted, I believe I may be one of the youngest in my GI office, OBGYN & Mammogram place I go. Cause whenever we've gone, (even though I'm 35 & husband's 43) we get loving and cute glances when we come in holding hands & he often holds my belongings when we're getting situated/coming out of the office!

Glad there are some sweet people there in the hospitals for you when you stay!

I'm only 20 and most patients are 40+ on my ward's, so get mothered sooo much! Even had one tucking me in last time because I was too sore to sit up and get my blanket :) . It does make a difference.

Diagnosed - you said your having morphine, is it oral or IV? Just wondering if theyd be willing to do it as a slow drip so you get more constant relief? The A+E at my hospital does that if they don't want to give you a PCA pump

Urgh I feel for you, I hated the oral morphine!

Um I wouldnt get your hopes up, they'll likely want to wait until your bowels are functioning more normally. If you havent been eating much that could be part of the cause, and morphine can be constipating I think. They may just give you something to get things moving just so they can see its working then let you go home, or they might want to look at things a bit closer.

The last time I was badly stopped up - but not obstructed - the thing the have me that finally got things moving was magnesium citrate. Two doses and everything began working again

Sometimes just a little Miramax is enough.

The thing you have t remember though is if you haven't had anything but fluids for several days, it's pretty normal not to pass anything until after you start eating some solid foods.

Oh, and if they suspect an obstruction, forget about the laxatives. Those go out the window until they are sure an obstruction is cleared, at least they certainly did for me.

consultant come and said continue with lax and have an enema tommorrow... he will review again tommoorrow on a positive the pain doctors visite and now keeping me topped up instead of me waitin for unbareable pain... had a 2cm bm today i was so proud

After any obstruction, ANY bm, no matter how tiny, feels like an accomplishment to me! Sounds like you are actually making some progress, even if it may not feel like it yet. Hang in there!

So, No Enema and lots of movicol and supositries and im half way there pain easing each day as is the pain relief. felt strange moving about after a week on my back but consultant thinks these pockets in my colon had collected obejcts that become infected. discharged from hospital today and told to carry on as normal. does a blockage cause that much pain ? for me to be wanting all that pain relief ? or should i ask for more tests etc ...

Yes, blockages/obstructions cause a lot of pain, especially if they're full obstructions. The first time I had one, my wife found me in a fetal position on the bathroom floor, basically rolling around trying to find any position that brought any relief at all. The only thing that helped, eventually, was dilaudid once they admitted me to the hospital.

Most excruciating pain I ever experienced. Easily an 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Glad to hear you're on the way to recovery. Good luck and get some rest - but be sure to keep moving about as well, that helps keep things moving, along with plenty of hydration.

hi thanks for that, come home from hospital last sunday monday was a ok day tuesday was rubbish and tonight im not getting stomach pain and stabbing feelings across abdo. i guess im in for a long night

sorry for the whinging i know and have read that most are a lot worst than me

Sorry to hear you're really going through it. Even partial obstructions hurt a lot so if nothing has been passing through I can imagine how it feels. I found it difficult to get any sleep and ended up on the settee each night. I hope they given you some good pain relief to take at home.

Keep whinging! No one on the forum will mind. It really helps to share a problem with others who have been there themselves.

Hope you have a good night
