Anybody know why I have to have an anesthesiologist for colonoscopy?

Kinda stressing about this one, still undiagnosed, going in for my 2nd colonoscopy on Monday, but I have to have an appointment with an anesthesiologist tomorrow, then when the time comes I'm supposedly going into the day surgery. Last time I went in it was a lot less work than this, my Dr. did mention something about them giving me a TON of drugs last time, wondering if maybe I had trouble on them, and they want to be sure? Anyone else deal with this? Is this normal? Am I just a stress case and need to just chill out?

My last scope the anesthesiologist came and talked to me when I was in bed waiting for the procedure to start. The times before that I'd imagine they went to my mom because I was under 18. I can't be sure what they will ask/tell you...but its normal for the anesthesilogist to come speak with you. They will ask you questions, such as if your allergic to anything, or had any problems with past sedation ect. Then they explain what they are going to do. The doctor for my last one told me what they used(propophol) and explained about it...im not sure if they all tell you what they use though. I know I've read on other topics how some people on here don't have a clue what they used to sedate them.

Good luck with your scope!!

I agree - it is normal to talk to one - maybe because they had to give you extra drugs, they want to get a better history before the procedure instead of the day of....so they can have the correct drugs available.

With my old Doc, I used to get valium and verced (sp)....I was semi-awake during the procedures......with my 'new' doc (only because I moved) - I get what is referred to as 'NORA' - Non-Operating Room Anesthesia.....I am OUT.....that is the Michael Jackson drug.......

Good luck with everything - the best thing for me is being able to EAT after - usually enough drugs still in me for the food to not bother me (for a while at least!) lol....

I have had 2 colonoscopies and 3 scopes, and I have had an anesthesiologist for every one of them. There is really nothing to worry about, it might even be better to have a consultation. It is so nerve wracking before a day surgury when you are sitting in the hall and somebody is asking you questions right before you are getting carted in. They usually just ask you what procedure you are going in for, your history (allergies, tolerances to drugs) and just letting you know what will happen when you go under.
No sweat! :)

Hi: There is a limit on how much of the "regular" colonoscopy drugs they can give without putting you at risk for negative outcomes. It could be that your GI and her/his team felt they really pushed the limit on the amount of painkillers they had to give you to get through the procedure, and this time they want to play it safe by assigning your case to an anaesthesiologist instead of giving massive doses of the "regular" drugs.

I had my third colonoscopy last tuesday and also saw an anesthesiologist for the first time. It didn't seem any different to me than before.
