Hello..
I've been diagnosed with UC in March 2013 and i've been taking Pentasa 6 tablets per day for about 2-3 months. Everything was ok! No pain and no bloody diarrhea but then leukopenia happend and my doctor switched me into Asacol 3 tablets per day. It was good at first but later i was in pain for like all day! It didn't go away.

Recently, i had a colonoscopy, biopsies were taken from terminal ileum and all parts of the colon and they were normal!! After seeing the results, the doctor asked me to stop my medications. Actually, i've stopped them for almost a week but im still in pain. So, is it possible that the diagnosis was wrong from the beginning? And if not, is it possible that the biopsies show normal results??

Welcome to the forum.

Can I ask you what symptoms you had before you were diagnosed and what tests you had before diagnosis?

The biopsies could possibly be clear because your inflammation was mild and the medication has allowed it to heal, or, what may be more likely, is that the biopsies could of been taken from areas where there was no inflammation to begin with. Both crohns and UC can have a "patchy" presentation, so the doctor performing the scope would have to take samples from exactly the right place to get a glimpse of the disease.

What are your symptoms like at the moment? Is it only the pain? I would question the decision not to have any medications at all, even if the biopsies were negative there are other things to take into consideration, symptoms, blood tests and imaging all have a part to play in creating an overall image of your disease. Even once remission is established, it is important to consider maintenance medication in order to give you the best chance of preventing a relapse.

Thanks for your reply @valleysangel92..

Before diagnosis, i had a very bad abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. I've had a stool analysis which was negative for Amoeba and also blood tests were made.
Then my doctor asked for a colonoscopy.. and based on the results of the biopsies it was confirmed that it's UC.

The report that was made during the latest colonoscopy showed that the colon was normal and no inflammation was found!

One of my doctors told me that it was normal for the results to come back negative. Because the disease was controlled by the medication. But i thought, why not try not to take any medication because there might be a mistake in the diagnosis from the beginning. And now i am afraid of having the flare ups back again.

Now i don't have any other symptoms but pain.

It sounds like that doctor was right, from your symptoms and what they said about the first colonoscopy I don't think the diagnosis was wrong, its more likely that things were caught at just the right time and your doctors were able to give you just the right treatment.

I would still ask them about some maintenance medication, IBD can be very sneaky and creep up on us and the next time you might get a much worse flare, so its best to be safe.
