Enterococcus, a genus of lactic acid bacteria. Often regarded as a harmless commensal. It became popular by the food industry for its use as a starter culture. It easily found its way into probiotics for both animal and human consumption.
A bacteria that very recently became increasingly controversial. It is conditionally pathogenic in both humans and animals, able to resist multiple classes of antibiotics, resistant to UV and chemical desinfectants and highly resistant to food deprivation.
Interestingly, Thiercelin already noted the ability for this bacteria to cause infection all the way back in the 19th century.
Intestinal overgrowth of this bacteria can lead to bloodstream infection and dissemination to other sites. Rare in immunocompetent individuals, widespread infections are increasingly common in immunocompromised patients. Combined with antibiotic resistance, this is an increasingly pressing health concern.
