I’ll keep this short but I just wanted to share my good news with all of you.
This has been a particularly hard year for me with my illness, causing me to need ileostomy surgery in April. Three months later I am feeling great and I was well enough to get married on Saturday! It was a beautiful outdoor wedding held at the Audubon Center in Santa Fe (I live in Albuquerque). We had a bit of rain during the ceremony, but we just relocated under the tents and said our vows there.
I was worried about a leak from my bag as I have a lot of problems with that, but luck was on my side, and I danced the night away, ate and had a great time leak free. Having the ileostomy didn’t stop me from having a great time at the wedding. In fact, I am sure that I wouldn’t have been well enough to have the wedding at all if it wasn’t for the ileostomy.
Since the surgery I have been able to gain about 20 pounds (up from only 101 at 5’4” in March) and my GI thinks that my disease is stabilized enough to get the reversal, possibly as early as August!!!!! I need to get a few tests done to make sure first, but if all goes well I will be getting rid of this bag before my cousin gets married in September.
I just wanted to share my good news with everyone. Having this disease can be full of hardship and disappointment, but there are bright spots too. I am excited to be getting the reversal, but I also know that if I have to have a bag again at some point in my life I will be able to handle it. Even better, I know that I have married a man that can accept me through the hardest of times, no matter what happens.
