So my sister had a cat she couldn't care for because she had a baby and gave it to my parents to take care of. That was years ago. Tonight my mom called me up asking if I could get a hold of my sister (she never answers the phone) because her cat got hit by a car and said its jaw was crushed. I called my sister right away (no answer but kept calling because 3 calls in a row means its a family emergency, so she picked up). I told her what happened and she got off the phone to call my mom while I looked online to find a local ER vet so they could take the cat in.

I spoke to the ER vet and they said it would cost $82 to see the cat and a total of $150 to put the cat down if needed (that's including the $82). So I called my mom back and told her where the place was and how much it was and she said, "we'll see."

Then I got a call from my mom saying that my sister showed up and was with the cat which they finally got in a box since apparently no one could go near it earlier. She said it was bleeding out its mouth and eyes yet is more "comfortable." I asked if anyone was going to take it to the ER and she said, "If it comes to that."

My jaw simply dropped. I know my family is poor and all but you can make payments on a vet bill and so far that's two people who are capable of taking the cat to the vet (I don't have a car and can't even get down there but they DO!).

My fiance said I should call them back and try talking some sense into them but I have no idea what to say to these people. I mean how can you not take the cat to the vet? Its flat out cruel to just leave him like that. He's got to be in unimaginable pain. I just have no idea what to do. I really hate my family so much sometimes.

Guess I just needed to vent and tell someone cause I just feel so horrible for that cat. I just saw it a few hours ago and he was completely fine and totally sweet. Now this...

Update: Hours later they finally decided to take him to the vet and have him put down. Should be going to kitty Heaven about now. They finally did the right thing.

Just called my mom again and she said that they put him in the garage away from the other cats and wild animals. She doesn't think he's going to make it and said that they didn't take him to the vet earlier cause it looked like he was about to die. I asked her what they were going to do with him if he was still alive tomorrow and she said that they'd probably have to take him to the vet. My sister went home. Just saw the cat and went home. I don't understand. If you're going to take it to the vet anyway after like 12 hours then why not take him now or right after it happened? I told her how I felt about the whole thing and that it was cruel but she countered saying that he's safe and warm. How is that safe and warm!? The whole thing just makes me sick.

My heart breaks for you Crabby. If it were me, I would've taken it to the vet STAT to see if they could help the poor thing. I am an animal lover so I can understand how you feel.

When my Ike got sick, he was a 13 yr. old Basset, I did everything in my power to get him comfortable as he was a diabetic, had a mild case of colitis, and neck issues. It got to the point where he wasn't bouncing back one weekend when he was sick on both ends plus wasn't eating, so I cld my vet and she said that being he's so old, it would be best to put him down or wait it out by giving him pain meds to make him comfortable. I opted to put him down ASAP because I didn't want to see him suffer as I had seen him suffer greatly when he crashed due to low sugar. I could tell by his eyes that his gut was hurting and my heart ached because being a CD patient, I knew what it was like. I cried for a week after he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and was very depressed for several months.

I hope you are doing ok and that your family will do what's best for the cat.

The cat's only about 7 years old and at least having pain meds sounds better than sitting in a shed bleeding with broken bones. Its so sickening. :( I wish they would do what's right and put the cat down since it sounds like that would be best rather than let him what? Slowly bleed to death in horrible pain? God its so disgusting. I'm disgusted with all of them right now.

Oh man, that is so cruel. :( :( :(

I hear what you are saying about them being poor and I know that can make things difficult. Okay, so this doesn't sound like a very moral thing to say but if the cat in no way identifies them as the owners, previous visits or microchipped, why don't they just drop the cat off at the vets and say they found it on the side of the road. At least that way something humane will be done for the poor suffering animal.

I never thought of that Dusty, I guess they didn't either since they FINALLY had a change of heart and decided to not wait till morning and took him to the vet. The vet said that the damage was too extensive with a split jaw, broken bones including his leg and brain damage where even if he were to be fixed up he'd have to be tube fed the rest of his life. So they decided to put him down. I'm really glad they took him in even though it was hours later. Still very heartbreaking. :(

So sorry to hear about your cat - our pets are part of us, our family, and who we are in so many ways. Glad he's not suffering any more (poor little thing!!)
:hugs:

:/ in the future for any whom reads and your in usa with a situation like this....

if you see a hurt/injured animal by any reason that needs to be put down and you can't do it yourself or you can not determine the extent of injuries. Then please please call you local police non-emergency number. They will contact animal control if your area has one or will take care of the situation. Do not prolong the animals suffering, police will take care of it at no cost to you.

Oh Crabby, what an awful situation. I'm glad they finally took him in and did the humane thing, but like you I feel it's awful that anyone would let an animal suffer needlessly by waiting like that. Full disclosure - I have 5 pets (cat, dog, hedgehog, 2 gerbils - oh, and I'll soon have more pets as I'm waiting on some stick insect eggs to hatch!). The emergency vet is in my phone's speed dial and as far as I'm concerned, that's what stuff like credit cards are for. My dog was at the park earlier this year when a big dog knocked her down hard - when she got up, she was crying and limping. I immediately carried her home (we live near the dog park, but it was still exhausting carrying a 42 lb dog through the park and down the block to my house), got her in the car, and went right to the emergency vet (it was a Saturday so no chance of seeing the regular vet). It ended up being a few hundred bucks with the exam and medication they gave her, but it was worth every penny. She ended up just having a sprained leg fortunately, and was fine after about a week. I would have paid more money if it were a fracture or something, and that would have gone on the credit card too and I just would have dealt with it. Heck, I'm more of a cat person than a dog person (if you couldn't tell by the profile pic) but I love my dog and a few hundred bucks to get her immediate relief and care is worth every penny and then some. The way I see it, my pets rely on me to get them the proper care they need and that includes emergency care - yes, I'm pretty poor lately, but even so my animals are all well-fed and well cared-for and will continue to be in spite of my financial situation. I just don't understand people who let animals suffer like what your sister did, even for a few hours. If it were her or her child with a broken jaw, I bet she'd be at the ER in a heartbeat. I just don't get it.

I agree with Cat-a-Tonic. When I had my Ike, a Basset hound, for 13 yrs. he was seen at the ER vet 2 x because he got into mouse poison. I called them ASAP and got information on how to induce vomiting and then I took him in to make sure he was ok.

After he was diagnosed with diabetes, I took it upon myself to learn how to give him his shots as I was use to giving B12 shots and blood thinner shots in my gut and hip. He relied upon me to care for him and to make sure he'd be as comfortable as possible even when he crashed due to low sugar. He had colitis and neck problems as well so whenever he got insomnia and was crying at night, I'd get up and he'd paw me to get down on my knees while he put his head in my lap for a neck massage.

He was my constant companion and shadow when I was flaring with Crohn's. He'd sit on my lap while I waited to be taken to the ER, stay by my side while I slept on the couch in pain, and was with me after my stroke by never leaving my side at all. When he became very ill one weekend in May, he wasn't getting any better so I called the vet. She told me that being he was 13 the humane thing would be to put him down or give him pain medication to make him comfortable. It was the toughest decision I ever had to make. I had him put down that day as I didn't want him to suffer. I stayed with him the entire time, holding his paw w/his blanket and woobie until he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

I thanked him and held him before the IV was put in, crying nonstop. I could sense he knew but I was forever grateful for the time we spent together. I was so depressed and devastated for 6 months that I asked my husband if I could get another Basset.

So I got a female and named her Bailey Grace. She will never replace Ike but she is very loving, caring, and attentive. She found a DVT in my right leg 2 months ago
by pawing and nipping at the leg which I thought she was just playing. So I called the hematologist and she got me in for a doppler test & I was diagnosed with a HUGE DVT....a clot in my groin, behind my knee cap, and 1 below the knee. Overall, it was 12" + long. The MD told me that Bailey saved my life and it was a good thing I spotted the swelling behind my knee cap.

She was rewarded with several toys and a bag of baby carrots along with a body massage which she gets daily before bed time. I love her so much. She is my child with fur. :)

Thanks guys.

I don't understand it at all Cat. Some people just don't see animals as equals to humans and true, to me they aren't but their lives and well being are in our hands as pet owners. Also, they don't have a credit card but I know vets allow you to make payments especially in emergency situations. In the end it wasn't a money issue, it was more of a caring issue.

You can always call Animal Control or the Humane Society-I had to have my cat put to sleep when he was 15 and they charged like $25. That was 3 years ago. Here in So. Cal SEACCA responds to animal emergencies-they would have come for the poor kitty.

So sorry you went through such a bad experience :(
