Hi folks

I am scheduled for a gastroscopy soon. Addtional to my lower abdominal pains, for the last couple of months i have also been experiencing pain in the center of my upper abdomen, and in the center of my chest. I also have a strange feeling when i swallow now, like there's a lump in my throat.

I know i have two options for the gastroscopy, possibly even three?

1) through the mouth
2) through a nostril

I am curious to here from people who have had it done both ways, which way did you find was the least stressful and least uncomfortable?

Regarding the possible third option, does anyone know if it is possible to have a gastroscopy done while under general anaesthetic?

Thanks and regards
Ali

Hi Ali,

I've only had it done once and that was down the throat. They don't normally use a general, but go for what is termed "compliant sedation", just a little injection in the back of the hand. Basically, you are conscious, but don't know what's going on. I didn't remember anything and my partner who has had the same procedure and also didn't know anything about what went on. The only down side is that you tend to have to stay at the Hospital for an hour or two and someone need to take you home as you can't drive. I'd never have it done any other way!

My initial diagnosis, after a year of hell, was from the nose to the stomach and a barium pushed through the intestines. It wasnt pleasant as I was awake for the whole thing. but it was the best way to find out. Good luck on your test, let us know how you make out.

is it just the NG tube Pen that isnt pleasant? I have a CT with NG tube coming up so I am just wondering... they will push dye through mine I think.

I dont think they do much under general anaesthetic - unless it is surgery

Ewwww NG tubes are no fun. I had to recently have one in the hospital. I was completely awake, alert, and had to keep it in for several hours....it was horrible. All I could do was ask for my pain meds, and anxiety meds...they helped, but I dont wish it upon anyone...Good Luck with that~
