I thought my output would be more watery since I have an ileostomy but its oposit of that it's so thick it pulls my pouch off, am I eating too much?? I have a crazy apatite sometimes. I've gained about 10 pounds since surgery I weigh 98 pounds now :):) but I'm going through a pouch every 24 hours if not less. I did get 3 days out of my last one. Is this normal for it to be so thick so soon from surgery.

It's normally watery but I'd talk to your ostomy nurse and also the companies who may be able to send samples. You can try foods to increase more liquid output and also try adding in liquid deodorant into the pouch after each empty and than it may not be as thick.

Don't worry. Thick isn't bad. A pouch a day is a lot though. Do you wear a belt? Is it the weight full that pulls it off? Is it not sticking properly? How's the skin under the wafer?

I've never experienced that problem unless the wafer wasn't fitted at applied properly.

Thick is certainly not bad. I was told by my stoma nurse that the texture of toothpaste is ideal. You might just need to empty your bag more often, unless it is not sticking properly. Perhaps you could try something like the Brava tape around the edges.

It is great that you are putting on weight. :dusty:

Thanks, I'm happy I'm putting on weight I looked like a stick with a head before it was disgusting. I've had to change my bag twice today my skin around my stoma is now starting to become irritated I used some of the stoma powder then dabbed it with a skin barrier wipe then I used a cohesive ring then I put the pouch on. I'm using a one piece coloplast at the moment the medical supply company keeps sending me wrong stuff. I measured my Stoma and its measures an inch the convetec pouch's I want to use are way to big for me there's to much room between the stoma and the opening which means Ill probably have more leaks. I would say the output is just exactly like toothpast maybe a little thicker. No I'm not wearing a belt I've been wearing tank tops under my shirts they help hold the bag in place I just bought a couple of tub tops hoping they would help they are tighter then my tank tops. Maybe I should invest in a belt or some support My tanks have been doing a pretty good job up until recently my output pushed my bag right off my side. I probably didn't have it on right I'm still figuring things out. I'm back to work now and would hate for this to happen there.

You need your stoma bag opening to fit properly, otherwise you will get irritation and leaks. Do you have a stoma nurse? They usually will measure it for you and give you some properly fitting sample bags until you get yours from your source of supply.

Most of the Coloplast bags come pre-cut in a range of sizes or you can get ones that you cut to fit yourself. I can't be bothered cutting my own, so have always used the pre-cut ones.

Don't accept badly fitting bags!

As has been said, thick (toothpaste consistency) is considered healthy. I don't think it's abnormal for you to be getting thick output this soon after surgery - mine took only a few days to settle down and stop being water with my last surgery, and with my original surgery, I didn't get any output for quite a few days due to ileus, but when the output did start coming, again, it was thick in a matter of days.

Some people seem to find thick output easier to manage - it's less likely to leak by seeping under the bag - but I prefer it watery, because watery output doesn't stick to the bag opening when you empty it. My output usually is thick, I know there are some foods that are supposed to make it watery, and others that thicken it, but I haven't attempted to make it more watery since I've been told thicker is healthier. I haven't noticed any correlation between my diet and output thickness anyway. Sometimes my output is watery - maybe for a day or two every couple of weeks - but it doesn't seem to relate to what I've eaten. The only food/output correlation I've found is between fibrous foods that don't break down and solid pieces in the output.

I also agree with the above posts - you deserve having a stoma nurse to try and stop this problem! Thick output shouldn't make a bag come off.

In the mean time:

Can you get any mouldable rings or paste to fill the room round the stoma to stop leaks? Though presumably by the time you've ordered that, you should also have been able to order some different bags that fit. I do all my own cutting - or at least I used to, since my right hand is still recovering from paralysis my dad has been cutting them. But my cutting is far from perfect, but doesn't seem to result in leaks if I cut them a bit bigger than the stoma. As long as I use a convex bag I don't get many leaks. I also find the convex ones much easier to put on correctly. Are you using them because they're supposed to be better at holding heavy output? I didn't know they could be used for that but I can see it might make sense.

Are you on any medications that could thicken output? Obviously there are anti-diarrhoea ones which would slow the bowel down and so thicken output and I'm assuming you're not taking any of those; opiate painkillers could also thicken it but if I remember correctly, you're not taking those either. But you may want to check the side-effects list of any meds you are taking, and check whether they can cause constipation.
