I went to my hair dresser yesturday and she confirmed that im loseing my hair. i've been on pred for 2 months. 15 days a 40 mg and tapered down 5 mg a week. been off it 2 1/2 weeks now. also on pentasa. i see me dr. on tuesday. does anyone how to stop this? or which med is causeing this? Will my hair grow back soon? thanks

Hi lilninja

Don't fret, this happens either cos of bein a Crohnie, or cos of the Pred or Pentasa, dunno, but it happened to me whilst on Pred, and I freaked!!!!
Now it's growing back!!
I was on Pred for nearly 4 months and been off it a week, so try not to worry, it won't fall out completly, honest!

I'm not on any meds currently and am still losing my hair. Fortunately it hasn't all fallen out...lol Sadly, hair loss seems to be yet another symptom of Crohn's :(

I have been on Pred since 2008 YES here in NZ they like to keep me on it, I started with 60mg daily also pentasa 8 daily plus lots others I took 37 pills daily but now only on 5mg daily Pred and 4 daily pentasa and yes my hair is thining out it is a bit scary but the hair thats coming out is growing on my face THATS the WORST thing I feel. I might have to start shaving or something.

Keep your chin up it cant get much worse!!!!

I have experienced hair loss for approx 5-6 years now it is all in front and the dr
said it could be the crohns or poor diet and diarrhea. I find it is worse when I don't eat b/c of nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite. And sometimes when I'm having so much diarrhea I am afraid to eat for fear of the abdominal pain I get sometimes I feel better with no food in my belly.

Is it a combo of poor absorbtion and Pred that makes us lose our hair? Mine was falling out in gobs until just recently. I am now at 15 mg Pred and it is still falling out, but not as much as when I was at 20.

Also - I just got my hair done about 2 weeks ago and have already stared noticing grey, so I think it is starting to grow back in quicker as well.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could transplant the facial hair up top????

Actually the pentasa is known to make your hair fall out. It made mine fall out. I've been off it a few weeks and I haven't lost any.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one losing hair. Its been getting to the point that I thought about just shaving my head. Boy would I look fun going from hair that is below my shoulders to bald.
It seems that the most common thread is Pentasa. I am also taking it and I never had a problem with my hair falling out until after I had been on the Pentasa for quite awhile.
If I shave my head I think I'll get those fake tattoos put on my head. I'll call it brain art.

Oh I hated all the hair loss, aswell as pred I was on warfarin for blood clots on my lungs and that made it worse.

I have very straight hair and the hair that grew back was really curly, it was so strange having curly bits at the fron and back! Now it's all my normal hair again thankfully, but still thinner than it was.

Hang in there, it will pass eventually

Correct, of the meds you mention lilninja it's most likely the Pentasa.

Thank you for the post.

thanks for all the posts. it helps to know im not alone. i see my dr. next wee, i'll see what she thinks and if theres something else she can put me on.

Just remember, lilninja, bald bikers are beautiful. Well maybe not to me, but some people think so. Can always wear a dew rag.

I hope your DR can give you some good advice or knows something that can help.

Yeah

or we could just walk on our hands! meaning, cos of the facial hair, our heads look upside down!!

Hi lilninja - I've lost gobs of hair this winter/spring because of the pred (which I'm finally off of after 7 mths - and my hair loss is slowling down, thank goodness!!!). My hairdresser said it looked more like mine was breaking off than falling out, and she said there was some kind of professional shampoo that helps if the hair is really falling out - might be something to ask your doc and hairdresser about.

I'm sorry you're going through this - it stinks.

I lost an estimated 70% off my hair upon taking Azathioprine, it was not a good side effect so I can sympathise. Although I no longer take the Azathioprine and my hair is regrowing (thanks Minoxidil, see below...) I do still get infrequent hair shedding, I think it's part and parcel of not being particularly well nourished sadly.

Minoxidil which I mentioned before is a topical solution proven to stimulate hair regrowth and it is very, very good. I have been using it a good while now and with excellent results. Only available on private prescription but you might like to look into it.

My hair is really messed up from the whole ordeal last year. I now have a Grey patch that lays in a lump just to the left of center on the top of my head. I have my hair cut sorter now than any time in the past 30 years and I doubt it will ever recover as the 40's seem to be blowing by rather quickly :(

I'm having the same thing happen to me and was told it could be a side effect of the pred. Will be off the monster in two weeks though!!!!
