Hi all,

So I'm due surgery in the form of a small bowel resection because of a stricture in the terminal ileum on Wednesday (11th Dec). I started with cold symptoms yesterday (8th Dec) that were worse today but have got better with the remedies etc as the day has gone on.

I can't believe that I have got this stupid cold now, just before surgery.

Is it likely they'll reschedule my surgery now? I honestly can't believe it!!

Sorry I should add I've got my pre-op tomorrow (10th Dec) so will discuss it with them then. I'm so upset, I'd mentally prepared myself for the surgery and now this! Aaarrrrgggghhhhhh!

Sorry to hear this :( .

Unfortunately, this depends a lot on the individual hospital and surgeon. Some surgeons will still operate as long as there is no evidence of the virus turning into an infection or impairing breathing. Others prefer the patient to be as close to 'healthy' as possible. Is your breathing fairly clear?

I had a bit of a cold just before my surgery, and went to my doctors, they said that if it went onto my chest they *may* of had to cancel, but keep in mind I'm asthmatic so they are extra careful with breathing.
Luckily my cold cleared before I was admitted.
If they do reschedule, you will hopefully remain high on the list and will get the next available slot, I know this must be so frustrating *hugs* .

Good idea to discuss during pre-op testing. If its not bacterial or viral they will probably proceed. Based on your symptoms they may want to do a chest X-ray on you.

Hi,

Thanks for your responses. I've discussed in my pre-op today and they said I will be fine. They said they wouldn't operate if it was a chest infection and the patient was taking antibiotics. Luckily my symptoms are on their way out .... Phew. She's made a note of it on my paperwork though and said the aneathatist will listen to my breathing in the morning, but said all should be fine.

I've been given some sachets of pre-load to drink. So looks like it's all going ahead, so relieved!

Yvette.
