Hi everyone I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were
On lactose free milk? Milk is a bit of a nuisance for me sometimes and
Since I'm so stubborn and dont want to live without my hot chocolates or cereal I wanted to know if lactose free milk works for anyone? I've tried soy but I'm not a fan of the taste and i tried lactose free milk a few years ago and have didn't mind it.. Sooo just wondering if that might be the way to go ?

:)

Lactose milk is the only kind I drink, ya its a bit sweeter, thats because the lactose is just a sugar and I believe they just add the enzymes to break it down so its already processed when it gets to your mouth so you taste just a basic sugar. I sometimes still get sick from it but I find that sometimes thats just because its too cold, start it with something simple for awhile like on your cereal and eventually it will just become second nature. Usually it bakes fine too, I've only had 1 or 2 instances where the recipe was not quite the same as with regular milk. If you plan to make chocolate milk just mix it yourself otherwise the store bought stuff can be very sweet.

My son is heavily lactose intolerant so we started using lactaid for his sake. At first I found it odd and didn;t take to it but now it's just fine. It seems to cook the same way regular milk does as well, not sure how it bakes. It tastes decent on cereal(whereas soy and almond milk can change the taste). It's more expensive than a regular gallon but if regular milk is killer on you than the extra expanse is worth it. Honestly I don;t really see a huge differance between regular and lactose free milk anymore

Ive tried Lactofree milk (they also do cheese and yoghurts) and found that tasted the same as normal milk. A bit more expensive iirc

I also make easiyo yoghurt which as less lactose in it and enzymes which break down lactose. It somes in a powdered form and can be made with just hot water within 6hrs (just add water and wait). Nice on cereals.

I always have lactofree milk too , Normal milk kills me too , been on lactofree for a while now without any problems

I've tried and used the lactofree milk when I was having problems. It tasted fine and had no issues with. Now back on skimmed milk, but no problem with using lactofree if and when needs must.

go for it.

I also use coconut milk and I'm going to try almond milk. I'm not lactose intolerant, but I have other reasons for trying different substitutes for cow's milk.

coconut milk is awesome and so is almond. Im not a big fan of cows milk myself and rarely drink it or use it I prefer coconut, soy or almond juice but use cows milk, only if it is organic, in making breads and baked goods as I am allergic to wheat but have no reactions to lactose or milk but don't care for the taste. Irony.

The best thing to do is try it. Most people have lactose intolerance. If you are allergic to the proteins, then it won't do you any good. If that is the case, you will have to keep looking. They used to make a lactaid type product as a powder that you put in your milk and let it break down the milk sugar in your fridge. I don't know if it is cheaper or not, but you could search.

Lactaid works well for me, but I usually just have almond milk. There are also lactase enzyme pills that you can take just before eating lactose that work for some people, but it might take some trial and error to see what strength/type you need or whether they work for you at all. Good luck! :)

I've used a "lactose-free" milk (which is really just normal milk with enzymes that break down lactose added) and I still get sick. From what I've read, it's also not uncommon to be allergic to a protein in milk called casein. I just can't win.

Lactose Free And Liking It?

I was reading your coments on Lactose free milk. Looks like Lactose free is the best way to go. I'm been on the reduced fat milk for a long time and it definitely has caused some problems with the Crohn's. I don't drink much, but do like my cereal and don't like to do without it. Can you get this milk at a fairly reasonable price? I'm already on Gluten free bread for my Celiac condition and that costs a fortune.

It took me a little bit to find the lactose free milk that worked for me until i talked to my GI. He told me that a lot of people that think they are lactose intollerant are actually reacting to the milk fat. Easy way to tell: try skim milk. If you still have symptoms try fat free lactose free. Ive learned that i can cook with the fat free without issues but i have to drink lactose fat free. And everywhere ive seen....its not that cheap. It costs the same for my half gallon as for my kids whole milk....

I drink the lactose free milk and I actually now like it better than some of the normal milk I used to drink! I couldnt tell if I had issues with milk but i figured one less thing to worry about and one less thing my stomach has to digest.

I've been trying lactose free milk and it sill gets me sick. I have no problem with soy milk but it still has lots of sugar. I sometimes have a bit with my Special K cereals. I just bought almond milk, I can't wait to try it.

I've some problem with yogurt. I've read different opinions regarding sheep milk yogurt, some say that it might be a good alternative for those of us with lactose intolerance, some say that it contains even more lactose than cow milk. I had some today and I feel a bit funny in my tummy. I'm trying hard not to blame the sheep milk yogurt, cause I really like it.

I was intent on trying lactose free, but found none at my Whole Foods store. There was a lot of Coconut Milk available, and on sale, so I tried it instead. I have a friend who has been a practicing nutritionist for years and he always had great reports on the healing properites of any part of the coconut. I tried the milk and found it pleasantly tastful and kind of creamy, although not as heavy as regular milk. The sugar content of what I got was 80 gms per half gallon but you can get it sugar free as well. It also contains vitamin D and B12. The kind I got was So delicious and didn't get my stomach gurgling or out of shape.

I use almond milk in my gluten-free cereals. If I drink a glass of it, I add a packet of truvia (natural sweetener). I buy the unsweetened almond milk.

one day I picked up unsweetened almond milk by mistake.. eeww.. never thought of putting sweetner in it..lol.. I do like that coconut milk.. all these are more expensive than reg milk b/c our government supplements dairy farmers. the good thing to do is look in your sunday papers for coupons or go to the websites of some of these companies; sometime you can print coupons right from there. saves you a little.
and i have started using truvia... my daughter; who is the one with crohns; wont use any artificial sweetners; but trvia is not. I wish I could get her to try some differnet milks; she keeps saying she doesn't have lactose issues.. but then in the next sentence she said; well milk does make my stomach gurgle... duh! I guess she will figure it out

I don't mind unsweetened almond milk or soy milk, but I usually buy the vanilla unsweetened almond milk. I don't usually just drink a glass of it though. Most of the time I use it for my morning fruit and veggie smoothie or for cooking and baking. I also like picking up a pack of Soyummi puddings once in awhile for a treat. They don't use any refined sugars or artificial sweeteners and it's lactose and dairy free. Instead it contains a low-glycemic form of sweetener from beet syrup to sweeten and soy as an alternative to dairy.

M2M, yeah, I guess you have to let her figure it out on her own. Sometimes people just need to do that and don't want someone, especially their parent telling them what to do. I think it makes sense that with her illness she'd want some control.

I use lactose-free milk and do okay with it, I also have used goats milk and no issues with it either...I've often heard that goats milk is much easier on our system compared to cows milk...goats milk can be quite pricey though.

I like almond milk but my mother who is lactose free but doesn't have crohn's swears by it. It's amazing she can find it all over the world too.

I am right now eating lactose free yogurt which taste normal.

My son isn't lactose intolerant but I've thought about changing him over to lactofree milk. He tolerates cows milk fine but my husband who also has crohns couldn't drink cows milk when he was younger.
Can cows milk interfere with a calprotectin level with someone with crohns? My sons calprotectin came back high and he drinks loads of cows milk. Probably a crazy question but I just wondered. Xx

This is what I found. I'm afraid I had to scroll down to the bottom to find it. But, you can find more on this website.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3881398/

FC can increase in case of several inflammatory bowel conditions; therefore, we assert that FC can be useful only to determine relapses and follow ups after diagnosing patients as CMPA particularly with gastrointestinal involvement.

Cmpa is main in infants and typically not something seen past the age of 1.
It generally does not start after toddlerhood.
Your Gi would have noted increased eosinohils on the biopsy report although crohns also increases eos as well just not as much

Hope the scope gives you answers
