Good Afternoon all,

hope you are all well.

I am hoping for a little advice please. I have had crohn's now for 10 years, since i was 20. I am very lucky in that it is well managed with Infliximab, Azathioprine and Iron tablets. I do suffer from lethargic days, stomach pains and loose motions though.

I am in the process of buying a home and need a life insurance policy in order to complete on the property now.

I have had a quote from Aviva, however, because of the Crohn's, they will only give me life cover. They will not cover me for the other two major categories Mortgage Payment Protection and Critical Illness Cover.

If at all possible, I would like to protect myself, my partner and our home, so would like to get cover for all the groups.
I cannot be alone here, has anyone out there with Crohn's been able to get Mortgage Payment Protection, Critical Illness Cover and Life Cover?

if so, would you please let me know who your policy is with please?

Thanks for your time, and appreciate any responses.

Kind Regards,

Andi Cooper

Well, not sure about how it works in the UK, but here in Canada I can only get medical if I am in a group plan or on my spouse's. No one else will touch me with my medical history no matter how long I have been healthy. Good luck!

I was able to obtain life insurance through Travelers Life insurance at the age of 21 after I graduated from college. No problems whatsoever. The agent came to my home and met with myself and parents. He was informed about my illness but that didn't bother him and he even told me that I wouldn't have any trouble getting coverage w/the company. I filled out the paperwork stating what I had and when I was diagnosed and that was it.

I don't know if things are different now especially in the states, NY to be exact, if folks with serious illnesses can be denied or put in a high risk pool. I do know that if you are a smoker, the premiums are higher.

I am in Canada and have had life insurance. Ended up cancelling it for the time being though as I was paying 18 dollars a month (big woop) but for only 100,000 dollars coverage. The only reason I cancelled was because I'm only 22 and didn't feel it was something I needed at the moment. If you go on the ccfc.ca website it shows lots of tips to help get approved for life insurance with crohns

Andy, you could try looking at an aggregator website for other insurance companies that will find the cheapest life insurance cover for you in this case. You could also try speaking with the agent that's helping with the purchase of your home to find out if they know of any options for insurance providers that will cover mortgage and critical illness. Good luck with your search, I hope you find something soon!

Sometimes insurance companies will provide coverage but will include "riders" or "exclusions" if you have a chronic illness. This basically means that if you die from a condition related to your disease (and trust me, they will try to relate any cause of death to your Crohn's - I know, I used to work in the insurance industry) your beneficiary will not receive the death benefit. That's in Canada, though. I am not at all educated on how insurance works in other countries. Good luck!

I don't know anything about British Crohn's & Colitis organisations, but the Australian one advises on travel insurance companies that will accept Crohn's sufferers. I don't know about Life Insurance, but it might be worth enquiring.
