Hi, I'm 18 year old and I have UC. Im on remicade (fifth infusion) and i'm going fine. Before I was sick I used to do alot of recreational drugs (wich is over now) BUT I would like to know if doing something like pure MDMA in crystal form or shrooms would put my health in danger. I do not want to know the general risks of it.. I just want to be sure to not go directly to the hospital if I decide to do that. I would really appreciate the opinion of someone in the same boat as me.
I would consider snorting the MDMA powder instead of swallowing it.. Would it be better for my digestive system? Pretty hard question here...

I don't know the answer but I urge you to seriously discuss it with your doctor. They aren't judging you but Remicade is a serious drug and UC a serious disease and it is essential they know what's going on with your body.

Mat, what are you thinking? Even in a healthy person, doing MDMA or mushrooms would put your health in danger. Anything you put into your system affects your GI tract, since your immmune system is basically centered there, and recreational drugs pull your body away from healing itself. Anything that affects brain function can cause damage as well.

I agree with mccindy... any type of recreational (non-prescribed/non-monitored) drugs can be harmful, not to mention in many places illegal.

If you don't mind my asking, why do you feel the need/have the want to take them?

I'm a musician, it expand the way of thinking. Especially mushrooms, that gives you a whole other perspective of the world, people and society.

Mat - any type of drug can be dangerous, including morphine and ketamine, they are prescription only for a reason and they should not be messed with, used incorrectly they can easily be as dangerous as recreational drugs. Infact, in the UK, morphine and ketamine are generally only allowed in hospital except for in extreme circumstances, as they are highly controlled drugs with masses of side effects. In most UK hospitals 2 nurses have to be present when morphine or ketamine is obtained from the drug store. Thats how controlled they are. Obtaining them for any other reason or in any other way would be illegal in many countries. I understand that you want to free yourself and allow your creativity to flow, but is it really worth the risks? Think about this, what happens if you abuse the drugs now and then end up with crippling, agonising pain later that you can't have any meds for because you've become addicted or tolerant and the doctors won't risk it? Or if your using these drugs so often they mask your uc symptoms and you end up with a perforated bowel? Please think about this.

I do not abuse any kind of drugs. I'm against drug abuse and not addicted to any substance but weed. ( Wich helps alot with UC symptoms , btw. ) I'm for moderation and occasional use only. Being addicted to a substance is dumb, and if I had to be addicted to any substances, i would already be. And for legals issues, I don't care at all , I am for complete freedom.

It's not about freedom or addiction, it's about putting something into your body that is known to be directly harmful. There are reasons they are either illegal or "controlled substances". Find inspiration in the world around you to help you activate your musical muse. Writers, painters, poets and musicians find inspiration not related to drug use every day. Inspiration really isn't a very good reason to pontentially damage your body and/or your brain.
Visual beauty can be an inspiration in itself, as can a good story, or a good round of endorphin-releasing exercise. Sometimes you have to put in some effort to find your inspiration, rather than just taking some mind-altering drugs.

I went to a rave a couple of weeks ago but decided to stick with just alcohol. Still had a great time, to me it just wasn't worth the risk. Only done it a couple of times pre crohns and it was fun but i'm far more cautious and boring now that im sick haha.

Mat - if you need drugs to be creative, it isn't you that is creative. Bashing your head against a brick wall will give you a different viewpoint on society, and it is cheaper and gets you essentially the same place. Go out and play hockey and let someone take a head shot - it'll at least get you exercise before you injure yourself. Given the terminology you are using to describe using the drugs, it sounds a lot like you have already experimented with more than just marijuana. Be up front with your doctor about what you are using, and please don't try to rationalize it any more. The line about "lots of people" is entirely a poor justification for any sort of action. Let your real creativity through, enjoy and remember the real experience, and set yourself up for the best chance you can have at dealing with your disease productively.

I think the answer would be nobody knows. There won't have been any studies on the interaction of those drugs on IBD due to them being illegal in most countries, and also because of the minority of people taking them.

Don't be fooled that MDMA crystals will be pure. They will be bulked out with other chemicals to make it cheaper to produce (also normally with other drugs to get similar effects on the cheap). With shrooms they are known to give bad stomachs in healthy people.

You will have to weigh up the pros and cons, but don't kid yourself that you are taking them just for your songwriting as it doesn't work. I've seen people on MDMA and half the things they say are utter nonsense and definitely doesn't make them genius'

Hi Mat,
Needless to say that you already know it's gonna be bad for you even if your buzz might be great, the simple fact you are here asking reveals it. Even tough I never had episode where I did a lot of recreational drugs, I've been offered often and wondered about it a lot to always come with the conclusion that the risks would outweigh the benefits.

It might be awesome to create, I mean I know that altered state of mind lead to some crazy stuff but creativity can be expressed sober too.

Dealing with this disease (and most likely the medication you are taking) is way enough for one body to take. Be kind to yourself, don't harm yourself on purpose.

Hi Mat343121 and welcome to the forum! :D

I don't have any personal experience to share but I did find an old thread on MDMA use while on Remicade: http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=27089

As for shrooms there's a good post in this thread here: http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=17233

I'm not here to lecture you but I wanted to say that quality and dosage are extremely important and isn't something you have much control over when it comes to street drugs so please be careful.

I've done it a few times on remicade, and after each time I regretted it even if i felt fine the next day i still regretted it because the fact is i didnt need to take it. If you are doing well now I would stick to the pot. After all you end up just smoking a tonne when you take MDMA anyway. Don't rock the boat dude, get well, stay well, and if a cure comes around soon, sure party hard for it, but remember what goes up must always come down...

Don't you think you have enough issues as it is with UC that someone needs to tell you to stay off narcotics. It's stupid, you know this yourself.

I had MDMA with crohns in pill form. it wasn't MDMA as I ended up in hospital, most likely due to panic attacks as I was nervous about taking it and getting hot flushes and couldn't speak etc... I was on pentasa when I took it and there was nothing out of the ordinary. just stay hydrated as it may be more difficult for you to absorb water with a digestive disorder.

MDMA is one of those drugs that can kill you the first time you use it, or any time after that. Especially if it's the new "Molly" form of the drug. Is it really worth it to get high, when you run the risk of death?

I understand a lot of the concern being expressed in this thread, and all of it is well-founded, but let's try not to spread misinformation.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) is a harmless substance by itself. But the unregulated product you find on the streets, known as "ecstasy" or "molly" or a bunch of other names, is usually MDMA cut with some other substance - sometimes harmful, sometimes not - to keep cost down. This is one of the major problems with criminalizing these substances - the lack of regulation and quality control ends up doing more harm, specifically in those substances that come in powder-form.

Shrooms, on the other hand, have a lower risk of being cut with something because, well you can see the shroom yourself! The problem with shrooms, though, is they can cause some stomach trouble. These problems can be reduced by ingesting a smaller dose, but it's something to keep in mind. But just like any other person with a digestive disorder does with any food or drink, shrooms really have to be judged on a case by case basis. Some people don't get any problems with them, others do.

And again, because these are illegal substances (whether you like it or not), there is always the inherent risk that comes with something that isn't regulated or checked for quality. So please only obtain from highly-trusted sources and always start in smaller doses.

Or perhaps it would be wiser to avoid hallucinogenic substances and not take chances with the health of a person who already has a compromised immune system.

Personally I don't see the problem in them. Ok they are illegal, but this is mainly due to politics rather than health reasons (otherwise would alcohol caffeine and tobacco still be legal whereas natural products such cannabis and mushroom are not).

Most people are against them due scaremongering media, which never give a balanced report on drugs (in scotland every ecstasy death was reported in the media, but only 1 in 250 due to paracetamol.

From wiki:

David Nutt, a former chairman of the UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, stated in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in January 2009, that 'ecstasy' use compared favorably with horse riding in terms of risk, with the drug leading to around 30 deaths a year in the UK compared to about 10 from horse riding, and "acute harm to person" occurring in about one in 10,000 episodes of 'ecstasy' use compared to about one in 350 episodes of horse riding.[91] Dr. Nutt noted the lack of a balanced risk assessment in public discussions of MDMA:[91]

MDMA is also being looked at to help patients who have cancer

Information on mushrooms
There are also studies which include reports of psilocybin mushrooms sending both obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and OCD-related clinical depression (both being widespread and debilitating mental health conditions) into complete remission immediately and for up to months at a time, compared to current medications which often have both limited efficacy[30] and frequent undesirable side-effects.[31] Recent studies done at Imperial College London and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine conclude, when used properly, psilocybin acts as an antidepressant as suggested by fMRI brain scans.[32]

On another note one of the most feared drug, heroin, is given on a routine basis in hospitals as a painkiller even to young children

As with anything, if you have too much then its going to be bad, but to me there is much less hazardous than a lot of medicine we take
