Hi, I only have mild crohns (or so I was told last time I was checked out) but lately my toilet habits have changed. Usually I would have my one a day and it was all good, but lately I don't have to go number two for about two days and when I do I have to stay on the loo for a good while with quite a lot of effort. I get a good lot out but in small amounts and as I said it takes ages. It is also quite painful and sometimes I get some blood. Today was the worst, I went and near the end it felt as if (and sorry if I'm too graphic here) my rectum was being pushed out so out of fear I stopped. I was drinking last night, would that have any effect? I'm kind of scared anyone had anything similar and what should I do? Thank you

Drinking strips away mucous from the intestinal lining, and since we already have problems with the mucous barrier, drinking is only going to make it worse.
Since the Irish, either rightly or wrongly, have a reputation for doing their fair share of drinking, this may not be welcome news.

There are a couple of things that never fail to get my bowels in action quickly, and usually not when I want to have that happen. Crushed Red Pepper, or Cayenne Pepper on food will stimulate quick action in my case. Also anything drenched in Butter.

This is the simplest method that I know of to get things moving quickly.

Blood in the stool is not a normal thing, and it does indicate a problem as you are probably well aware.

Some people here go through bouts of diarrhea and constipation. If you think it is not normal for this to change for you tell your doctor. At least they can maybe keep an eye on your bloodwork to see if there are changes inside your body. Hope you feel better soon. Don't worry about being to graphic. This is the only place I can talk about poop issues comfortably.

I usually have the runs and last week I went 6 days without going. I finally went and like you, little bits at a time. I again haven't gone for 3 days. I make sure I don't strain to have a bowel movement or I will get blood on the TP. Are you straining to the point that you bleed or is there a lot of blood?

I to have had a change - had been regular as clockwork.....then had D last week, went from Monday evening until this morning (4 1/2 days) without a bm...this morning some but not a ton- had to strain too....thankfully no blood, but I will be keeping an eye out.....Dr appt Monday so as long as I don't have blood, cramping etc will wait it out......

I've actually started having this problem on and off as well. When I was first diagnosed it was always diarrhea. Now, I'll have bouts of constipation followed by diarrhea... it seems the longer I'm "backed up" so to speak, the worse the poos are once everything comes out. I mean it smells REALLY awful and you'd swear there was something dead inside me. After I've gotten over the constipation, it's as if my body is fighting anything that goes out and the transit time is shortened if you know what I mean (diarrhea, again!).

Although Dan's idea would probably work, I have a hard time with spicy things (hot going in means burning coming out!) so I try the less than natural, MiraLax. Out of all the things I've tried, it is more gentle and if I use it at the beginning of getting constipated it really helps to get things moving before I feel completely wretched.

Best of luck in getting things moving in the right direction!
