Smell?? changing the bag.

Just wondering how in the world did you guys cover up the smell when you empty your bag? I will not do it anywhere other than my own place but it sucks becuase that means i have about 4 hours to be out. Only because of the terrible smell. I've tried tic tacs( they actually worked a little) and the convatec deoderizer that doesnt work. Ive tried mouthwash. Do you guys have any other home remedies I can try? or whatever. :stinks:

Hahaha Yes. Even burping it to let air out the smell is so strong.. It goes through the house. It's hard to explain..lol enough to make you choke..

You can give a try to a bit of hydrogen peroxide, that is what I find works best for the smell. The annoying part is that it blow the bag when it reacts with fecal matter sometimes but I find the smell better. So I usually put it before I leave, burp my bag and then it wont react as much.
-Drinking coffee. It leaves me under the impression the smell is not as strong when I drink it. I don't know if that is just me or not... but I try to have some when I go out as I feel less embarrassed by the smell.
-I was gonna say antibiotics seriously reduce the smell... Therefore... I believe that putting a little solution of water and Bleach could probably do the trick... I don't know what would be the safe concentration though... I'll try to figure that out and try it... It would make sense though as it is the bacteria that are responsible for the smell mostly.
-That being said, eating less meat, nearly no gluten and no dairy highly reduced the smell.

Go to the stoma subforum and have a good 'nose' around for our tips.

Personally I use the Ostomart sprays (in all sorts of smells) to disguise the odor.

But...again I must state...if you find someones **** that doesnt stink, it must be the second coming of Christ, because I dont know anyone, human, animal or fish that doesnt stink! (perhaps mineral...I havent smelled rock poo yet)

Coffee makes my stool black and strangely enough imparts a coffee smell. My **** smells too...it smells like ****. I am not embarrassed by the smell.

It stinks when i empty my bag, but my step dad stinks the house out even more when he goes to the toilet too so I dont worry about it. I only start to worry if I can smell something when im not emptying/changing the bag. you can get drops to put into your bag but im not sure how good they are. maybe take a small can of air freshener or something out with you just incase?

Nyx uses mouthwash in hers to make her smell minty fresh. I myself being an old fart of 49 dont care what I smell like so much. Dont think I smell any worse than before I had 'Stan'. I simpy dont smell 30+ times a day in the loo! I smell like what I ate last night, so does everyone! (my partner Grahame..egads he's much worse than me!!!) The Ostomart nuetralizer sprays are really good if you are worried. And they are really small bottles you can put in your purse. Brilliant stuff. You can take them anywhere so you neednt worry.

I used to use mouthwash in my bag, before I started using the liners. Now I don't use anything. I figure, I'm in the bathroom, there are bound to be odours! If you're that worried about it, Febreze comes in a handy purse size deodorizer.

You may also try to burn some Papier d'Arménie. It's like incent kinda but it comes in a booklet of strips that you light up. It's even better than matches!

maybe consider using a disabled toilet when your out as they're a single room at least here in australia they are

crap I'm seeing a surgeon tomorow as my colon is severly inflamed and now thinking how am I gonna go out with the bag worried about smells but some people say they only chnage they;re bag twice a day so it can't be that bed

I have to empty mine about 4-6 times a day depending on what I eat.

When I use to have my bags I had a bottle with blue juice in it. I use to put a few drops in my bag and there was almost no smells at all. Forget the name of the thing but I am sure that any pace where they sell bags they will be able to tell you about it. It's great stuff.

ON a side note bag or no bag I have very bad gas always have since I had Crohn's and I DO NOT CARE IF IT SMELLS it has to come out!! Let the smell out!!!

And eventually you'll become like me...I stink when I poo. Everyone does. I often wonder why people are so worried when they go out to be afraid to empty. I smell teenagers whose body odour is worse than my poo smell! And if you're in public...are you going to see these people again?? Noooooo.

But let me tell you a VERY good excuse for the smell. Teee heee!! You can always wave your arms about and blame it on the mother changing a baby's diapers in there before you. (assuming there isnt a dog around) It works a treat! Baby poo smells are MUCH worse! :ycool:

I do have a selection of scented oils here at the house (got for soaps and stuff) and sometimes my poo smells of roses....sometimes it smells of sandlewood, but peppermint is great, my fav.
(still, dont use it anymore...maybe I should..sniff..sniff...no, all clear)

No we can't! And usually guys will comment back in the office when someone has made a really bad stink. So when I joined the company I am working out now I decided I was going to use the peppermint so I didn't get tagged with the stinky turd tag!

I do understand what you are saying Nyx, but I think for me that's the reason I use the peppermint oil for my minty fresh poop times!

I think we need to rename this thread...It's EMPTYING the bag, hopefully not changing 2-3 times. Thats why we have drainable bags ya'll. :dance:

I have a colostomy, and I still empty about 6-8 times a day. But thats because none of us like a 'full bag'. You just do it when you pee or need to empty, its easy. It just depends on how your colon is (or what is left) Again, we're all different.

Its been a life changing experience to make the decision myself, instead of my frecking ass making the choice! I think that part of the reason that we are so conscious of the smell, at least in the early stages of having a bag, is that we are emptying it in front of ourselves, right under our own noses. :eek2: So the smell is immediate and undiffused! Remember that you used to empty at the back, around a series of corners. :tongue:

The only time that I am really conscious of the smell is when I have been eating fish - but I still eat fish whenever possible. The benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Just keep saying to yourself: "Everybody's poop smells!" :hug:

I managed to stink out the whole back end of the house.
My boy was demanding to know "why does it smell like poop back here??"
I chuckled, thought of this thread, and blamed the cats.

- Or "forgot" my pills
- Or how much I like to breath the fresh morning air lol
Just to burp my bag and not smell the whole house when I go to empty after (that helps a lot for not smelling a lot... It's no big deal as everyone else say, we all stink at some point but I am also aware that ileostomy can be intense and when there is no ventilation its a bit ackward. I used to work in a StarBucks and there was only one tiny bathroom opening on the dining area it was really not so great. I would "love" to go take the garbage out so I could solve that problem with subtlety.

But hey, if people were to fart all their farts at once, they would probably smell intense too, they just don't know about it lol!

My understanding is that waste from an ileostomy is much more odorous than waste from a colostomy. The original eucalyptus scent works great if you use about 4 drops in the toilet either before or after you empty the bag. It really clears the air.

Haha oh yes.. I don't mind the smell of poo but the smell that comes from my ileo is so strong and it lingures around OMG. Doesn't go away. LOL I blame it on my daughter.. I always say I just changed her diaper.. Sucks when she goes to her fathers house for his visits I have no one to blame it on
