Getting a little anxious as we are flying over to Perth for a week to stay with my i laws for their 50th wedding anniversary.

Anxious on lots of fronts. Having to set up my changes in a whole new environment, should I double bag my refuse and take it to the outside bin. How do I disguise that putrid output smell especially when the toilet is off the main lounge area. What if my bags get lost at the airport? And to top it all off my MIL is a nosed gossip, so I am sure all the relatives know what I've been through and I just don't feel like being stared at and asked 'curly' questions. I don't really know many of my husbands extended family as the live so far away, but I am pretty sure they know more about me because of the MIL's gossip.

Just getting scared as we fly out on Thursday.

Have you tried the Just A Drop deodorizer stuff that you put in the toilet water after you flush? It's eucalyptus oil. Just a few drops in the toilet and it gets rid of the stink. It's a tiny bottle that you can carry in your pocket. You can get it (or similar stuff) on Amazon.

If you do try it, get the blue bottle and not the pink bottle. The pink is floral and is kind of weird...not as effective.

If you're worried about your luggage getting lost and your supplies gone with it, just pack your stuff in your carry-on. You're allowed a small suitcase and I've never had a problem getting my supplies through security.

As for your MIL, just go with the flow. I've found that most people won't ask questions without asking me if it's ok first. Then they need to look out as I'm a blabber mouth about Oscar...lol

Hope it all turns out well and that you have a great time!

Ask her if she wants to touch it. That will either shut her up or get her interested to the point of it not being an issue. :lol2:

Jano, I use nappy bags to get put my used bags in. They're perfumed and nearly opaque so pretty discreet. We stayed with friends recently and I did double bag my used bags then put them in the kitchen bin which was emptied regularly - but you could take them straight outside if that works better. As to smell while changing i haven't really got a good idea other than burning a perfumed candle? Sort of like the match trick for smelly farts. But I guess its not really discreet.
I think the best thing is to be totally upfront with your MIL, she will soon lose interest or have her curiosity satisfied. Though I do like 2thy's idea. :roflanim:
I think the other rels will have enough manners not to make you feel uncomfortable and if they don't, again being open about it is usually easier and quicker than trying to hide it all.
Re losing luggage - take your supplies in hand luggage. And if the worst happens, the nearest hospital should be able to help you out in the interim.
Good luck and have fun. I know MIL's are a trial, particularly yours - just remember she is the one with the problem not you. Stay strong and let us know how it all goes and any juicy gossip about the MIL!!! :)

I forgot to mention there is something you can put in your bag to absorb smells. I've seen it advertised in the ostomy mag. Probably to hard to get before you go away but I wonder if something like eucalyptus oil would help? Although it may make it smell even worse, I don't know.

Hi Jo-b, have you found that the windless helps with the build up of gas? I've had terrible trouble lately with gas filling my bag at night - even on the nights I don't eat brussel sprouts!

Yes I think it does I use it when I'm going away or out.i think you. Can get a liquid form too, when I go visiting or on holiday I also take a waterproof bady blanket that you use in cot to stop matress getting soiled its yuk proof on bottom and fabric on top, they great gives me a bit of back up if(pun coming)crap happens.

Thanks Jo-b, I sleep on a mattress protector with a bluey underneath the 'catchment' area. A bluey is one of those blue plastic squares they use in hospital when putting iv's in or changing wound dressings to catch any blood or whatever. I also have a waterproof cot blanket but I find it a bit stiff and uncomfortable so only use it on occasion. Touchwood I haven't had a night leak for awhile. I'll let you know how I go tonight tomorrow - the gods may be laughing at me. :lol2: :) :) :)
 anna
