Can we please fast forward to this time next week when this will all be over?
I know I sound like a bah humbug- probably am, but I've had enough of the endless documentary's, news updates etc...

PLEASE tell me that I am not alone!!

(Dusty- I know you will be so disappointed by this post, but just needed to get it off my chest!! x)

OMG- Just as I post- news update on the wedding rehersal!! Must be Karma!

And no you may not fast forward. Because this time next week I will have missed my birthday and be back at work full time. So that's a double boo.

Edit- OMG people camping on the streets already!

Well I'm gobsmacked Welshy!!! AND yes I am disappointed!!!

I was expecting you to be my representative over there, decked out in your best frock and hat with matching shoes and handbag, not to mention being flanked by corgis. We were to be like twins on the big day, on opposite sides of the world. What the hell I am I going to do now??? I will be like the third ball on a greyhound bitch down here in the antipodes!!!

If you can't trust someone with an ileostomy who can you trust?

Dusty. :)

So I'll be staying up till the middle of the night to watch, in jammies and fake tiara. The royal family might be relatively irrelevant in Canada (more or less depending who you ask) but I enjoy a good wedding. :)

Rebecca- how about fast forward to Sunday? Will still be headline news on Sat.

Dusty- I couldn't find a dress, shoes and hat that was appropriate for the occasion, but I'm sure as a one man band you will serve Liz and the family fine!
NEVER trust anyone with an Ileo- you can never be sure when they will s**t on you! xx

Oh Scottie, beam me up!
Enuf said!

I'm having a very long lie in on Friday, and not turning the telly on til Sunday!

I'm proud to have a Monarchy, I just can't stand the Royal Family, urgh!
Sorry, that just doesn't make any sense wot so ever!

Me eyes are melting, nighty night xxxx

Hmmm...well that's true (as I reach for the loo paper). Anyway, turn the bloody TV/radio off and get back to your thesis!

Dusty. :Karl:

Here in the States it seems to be a big deal, such a big deal that restaurants are opening early Friday AM for a Royal B'fast... me, I'll be snoozing away and then spending time in my office (aka: loo) I got up early for Diana's wedding and look how that turned out (rest her soul...) Wake me up a week from Friday :)

The coverage in the US is HUGE! You can't escape it. I can only imagine what it is like over the big pond! I am eager to see the gown, and I may wake at 6am to see it, but I will be happy when it is all over. However, I am sure another story will break and be in our faces 24/7. Hopefully, media attention doesn't turn back to Charlie Sheen; I'd prefer Royal Wedding coverage any day over stories about that hot mess.

I am 24 so never really seen a proper royal wedding, I am very excited!
Can't wait for all the ceremony, and Kate's dress.
And I may have a soft spot for HRH Prince William!

Those of you who love a good wedding can come to mine in January. But instead of rice or confetti when we walk down the aisle, I ask that you to throw prednisone.

Not trying to start a fight, but just wondering how much, if any, taxpayer dollars(ok, pounds) are being wast.......spent on the glorious occasion that you should all be so very proud of?!! Oooooh, I'm all aflutter!!!

That's a very good point, but I think tourist revenue will more than cover it. Everyone has to spend money to travel, sleep and eat in London. Plus, alot of souviners are being sold, at a time when many businesses are going under. From the department store to the single homewares shop! Also, all the extra Police, guards, soldiers and palace staff will be paid for that day they would not normally have worked, who then have the wages to go out and spend. All the caterers involved in the many parties of both sets of parents will also gain alot of revenue which they will go spend and again help keep them in business/people employed (hardly a sunday brunch being provided lol).

I believe within hours of the day being announced you could not get a central London hotel room for love nor money :) And I just read in the paper this week the outlying hotels are filling up fast as people seek a cheaper option.

Prince William is very popular in his own right and due to his Mother, and Kate just seems a lovely girl, and he is also heir to the throne which all adds to the interest.

Won't know more until afterwards of course!

I believe the police will be paid out of taxpayers money, since that's how they're usually paid, so that isn't really putting money into the economy. However, there will be a lot of revenue from tourism, which I guess the businesses have to pay tax on, so that should top up the tax funds. Just a shame we won't see much of the revenue this far North! (the cake was made near me, and couriered down by a local firm, but that's about it)

Dexky- that I think is one of my issues here. We are still hovering just above a double dip recession. I understand that this wedding will bring revenue but I doubt it will be seen outside of London. Scotland Yard are estimating that security alone will top £20 million and that bill is being picked up by the taxpayer. The families themselves are funding some of the event, but as the taxpayer we give them an annual allownace for maintenance and such occasions!
This whilst our troops are fighting abroad and are ill equiped, our education and health systems are struggling, seems (ONLY IN MY OPINION) a waste of public money.
That said- I do wish them a happy day, and hoping it goes without incident. They do seem like a nice, genuine couple.
Again roll on the weekend.......

Every single paper and all the news- 24 hours a day!!!

I will be forced to watch from start to finish my as my Grandmother has arranged a party for all the family and friends, starting at 10am.................she just LOVES the Royals!

LOL, "throw prednisone!" good one! I heard that since it has been declared a national holiday, the security people are all getting paid double time. Good for them, bad for the economy.
I agree, I'd rather listen/see things about the wedding than that nutbag Sheen...
I just got a VERY excited text message from my daughter (on her way to work, naturally...) saying that our local Dunkin Donuts will be having the ROYAL DONUT... she was so excited (can you tell that she is looking forward to this and thinks I am so cynical... now, where'd she get that???
I do like that the Royal Couple are not accepting gifts but have charities that they want people to donate to (think it's too late to request ours?) That is "noble" don't mind the pun :)
I, too, am looking forward to seeing just 2 thngs: the dress and the CAKE!!!!!!!!!! Jan

I agree. Even over here in the US I've had enough of it...I can only imagine how you all must feel over there. To me the whole thing seems a bit archaic to have this big shindig. Why not role with the times and have a private little beach wedding? Or elope to Vegas? Can you imagine the media spectacle THAT would cause???

The Crown Estates income goes 100% to HM Treasury in return for the allowance (Civil List Payment, which has not risen with inflation and is still at the 1991 level). In the year ending March 2011 £210.7 million is what HM Treasury got * £7.9 million is the Queen's payment, add in some tax deductible stuff, and cost of protection, and you get nowhere near the sum gained by the Gov.

So, I think the government gets the best part of the deal here!

For souviners they are sold all over the country and all help keep shops open and people employed, the staff, the cleaners, the delivery drivers, the shop fitters etc. Not saying it's £20 mil worth but it all helps. And those travelling to London have got to pay travel fares outside London and possibly stop over a night in a B&B, eat along the way etc or fill up with petrol.

And those coming from abroad are not neccessarily going to go to London only while they are here.

We're in trouble with the economy because the Gov failed to regulate/monitor the banks, then handed them stacks of our money with absolutely no conditions attached, which means the Banks have no obligation to lend to small businesses to keep things ticking over, and still pay themselves huge bonuses.

So, I know which out of the 2 options i'd prefer!

Yes, the Royal Wedding is a bit overblown and overhyped here as well. But so is the hockey playoffs. I don't feel that I can turn on my TV without hearing about the excruciating, mind-numbing details of the twin obsessions of the wedding and hockey. Two sides of the same coin! And after every playoff game that our 'local' hockey team has, the taxes to pay for the extra policing comes out of our pocket. (Shrug)

My parents have set their alarm, got a bottle of something, and are all ready to watch the Royal Wedding. They won't miss it for the world and I'm happy for them.

I have a corgi, and a tiara... but the corgi will be asleep in her crate, the tiara will be in the box with the other costume jewelry, and I'll be asleep in my bed when the royal wedding starts. I don't have enough interest in it to roll out of bed at 4 AM (I believe that's the time it'll be here in the Central US time zone when it starts) just to watch rich fancy people get married. And we don't get the day off here in the US, so I need my sleep so that I can make it through work.

As I stated it was simply My opinion!
I still think, that whilst our public services are in decline, and NICE still continue to deny patients drugs based on costs, then any £1 of public money spent on this is a £1 too much. Again, only my opinion.

Cool, that's what makes the world interesting, having different opinions lol :)

I am spending tomorrow morning at Kwik Fit! My car has squeaky brakes so I'm taking it to get checked. Hopefully it will be nice and quiet ;)

I will be sleeping through it all (hopefully). Working nights so wont even even get to see any of the extra bank holiday days (and i dont get paid extra either :( )

At least it give the southerners something to be excited about, doubt many northerners will be doing anything for it though (cept going to the pub)

That doesn't seem fair when the most of us have had days off!!! I would make sure that you take a sickie next month to make up for it. JOKE. Lol.

I think the Pope's visit was a bigger waste of money, IMO.

But hey, I get to have a nice lay in so I'm not complaining!

Hey Welshy, :bigwave:

Thinking of you buddy and doing you proud!

Of course being night time here, the outdoor decorations are now inside. I am decked out in all my finery and the corgis are at my feet. The wood fire is blazing and I have a glass of bubbly in my hand and via the wonder of live TV I am being transported into Westminster Abbey......You would be so proud Welshy!

Rule Britannia! :eek2:

Dusty. xxx

You gotta love how us Brit's can form a controlled crowd...if this was here in N.A. there would be tanks and tear gas everywhere

..now..WHERE'S THE CAKE???

Ha ha, I know - my aunt sent me that link because I've got a corgi, but that cake just creeps me out! I wouldn't want to cut into it. I can just imagine, "Would you like a piece of the snout or an eyeball piece?" Ummm I'll pass thank you very much!

The tv coverage in Ireland was a bit over the top to be honest. Our national broadcaster and various radio and tv stations provided coverage from about 8.30am. There was a screening in my home city as well at our annual may bank holiday weekend festivals. This country is going through the most difficult financial period in our history and some wedding that has absolutely nothing to do with Ireland gets preferential coverage over economic issues. An awful lot of people are very annoyed

Bored of it too (still found myself watching it for some reason) Loving the fact that im getting a 4 day weekend out of it thou :)

OMG... I turned on the tv to give myself some "white noise" after using the b'room. Do you think I could sleep.... n o p e... did I watch the festivities??? Y U P... okay, I sold out but that's it... watching DVD's or reading for the rest of the weekend. Enough seen, enough said. (She did look lovely and they both looked happy...) Me, I need a nap now after attending the wedding...

How i spent royal wedding morning.
Slipped whilst cleaning grout off tiles in my daughters newly fitted bathroom.
Crashed down on side of bath.
Pain in ribs REALLY bad.
Went to A&E.
Doc suspected cracked ribs.
Got sent to xray.
Hobbled up there to find the place deserted of staff.
Looked at clock - 11am.
They had all nicked off to see Kate's dress. (even the radiologist)
11.15 they all return and act as though there had been no dereliction of duty. lol!!!
I have one cracked rib. Loads of internal bruising and a tub of painkillers.
Not too fussed about monarchy but am guessing Will and Kate had a better day than I did!

Oh, Mario... sorry to hear of your ordeal. If it makes you feel any better...everyone is having a better day than you! Rest up! Take those pain killers. Rest up (and stay away from the royal wedding reruns and reruns of the reruns
:) Jan

Jan
Oddly it doesn't make me feel any better that everyone is having a better day than me. But hey, the sentiment is nice ...I think??
Which Boston are you in? If it is Lincs then you are enduring royal overload too. Re broken rib all i can say is OUCH!!!

No, Mario, sorry, I meant no harm is saying that (as a matter of fact, once I hit "send" I regretted writing it!)
I'm in Boston, MA USA but we are on overload (plus, our hockey team is still in the Stanley Cups and our basketball team is in the playoffs, so there's slim pickings on the tube.) Seriously, I hope you are feeling better!!!
Take the time to rest up and let everyone wait on you! Be a "Royal."
:) Jan

I thought the dress needed something. It was too plain, she needed sparkles or something! It was pretty boring in my opinion. I liked her tiara though.

Anybody else think it was weird that her sister/bridesmaid also wore white? I thought that was a wedding etiquette no-no! Isn't the rule that the bride is the only one who is allowed to wear white?

My understanding is that estimates of the cost are in the range of 20 million pounds, (~$33 million). But figures for such things are invariably hard to pin down, my guess is this is the minimum. Given all the economic troubles, austerity initiatives, etc., that the UK (like most of the world, including the US) are facing, I can't imagine many Brits don't resent that kind of expense. Here's a very good streaming video interview of British journalist Johann Hari discussing the wedding, its cost, and the cost/advisability of the monarchy in general. Very interesting: http://www.democracynow.org/2011/4/29/johann_hari_frenzy_around_britains_royal

At least you're on the same island!! Over 300 people lost their lives in possibly the worst tornado outbreak in US history two days ago and every single news outlet this morning showed nothing but coverage of the royal wedding. I finally flipped it over to the Weather Channel and even they were talking about the fact that it wasn't raining on the ffffffrigggin' wedding festivities!!!

Many brits don't realise HM Treasury got £210.7 Million from the Royals last year. But never let facts get in the way of a moan or an argument lol.

Maybe if the Government let them take security costs and big events out of that pot people wouldn't complain. But they are happy to take all the cash and let people blame the royals!

Each to their own, as I said is what makes life interesting!

Hey Star, I don't mind the Brit's having royalty. You're absolutely right!! To each his/her own! I just cannot comprehend the American fascination with it!! The wedding coverage was literally on every news outlet (mainstream anyway, thanks David) that we have!! It's a little ridiculous over here, don't you think??

I just cannot comprehend the American fascination with it!!

You're probably all wishing that you didn't have the war of independence and instead, had continued to embrace Mother England, resplendent in all her pomp and circumstance! :rof:

Dusty. :)

Since I don't live in the UK this is mostly a matter of curiosity to me, but my understanding is that the monarchy is a net drain on the British taxpayers. A couple years ago, the BBC calculated the total cost annually to be 41.5 million pounds (~$70 million), and this figure does not include the very costly round-the-clock (and round-the-globe, when their travels dictate it) security http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8124022.stm. In fact, with security factored in, the anti-monarchy group "Republic" claims the cost is more like 184 million pounds/$307 million http://www.republic.org.uk/What%20we%20do/Republic%20Campaigns/Royal%20Finances%20Campaign/index.php

I realize how people tend to react when they feel their group (nation, religion, city/state/cave they live in) is being attacked from the outside, and that's not my intention. As Dexky said, it's your business. And god knows the US is FAR from perfect, and we have our own class of insanely rich parasites in this country, with wealth disparity here increasing on virtually a minute by minute basis. But I have to say, if I was being asked to keep a group of individuals in a fairy tale existence, simply based upon their birth, it would really rub me the wrong way.

But that's me. Again, your business.

No no I find other people's opinions interesting!

Even if you take into account Republic's figure (with the bias of course), it's still a net gain of £24.7 Million to the Government. I would also consider things such as the Royal Household do employ a number of staff who all then have wages to spend into the economy (I think that comes out of the Civil List payment but am not sure).

And Royal patronage for the numerous charities also brings many benefits. Royal Warrants to companies also help to boost sales. They do numerous engagements, The Queen did 444 engagements last year based on figures in The Times newspaper. So it's not lolling around Buckingham Palace all day!

So I see more good than most in them, not trying to say it's perfect or right, but not as wrong as some would say.

OK, I'm converted!! I wonder if England will have us back? We could marry our debts together and get the royals to do a world tour!! We'd have that sucker paid off in no time:)

I enjoyed the day off :) one of my regular Dive boat skippers put an extra boat on for all those wishing not to watch the wedding so I pootled on down to Portland, Dorset and dived a wreck called the Aeolian Sky

I hadn't dive it before, the visability was fabulous and when I got home at about 21:30 I caught the wedding highlights :thumright:

I completely agree with you David. I can not understand how one declares themselves king or queen of a country based on their birth or family background. It just doesnt seem fair or democratic. As others have said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and many people support the idea of royal families but im quite happy that Ireland is a republic.

Glad to hear the Queen finally got married to Philip. I'm surprised they were able to live in sin for this long (her being the queen and what not). I'm happy that Chuck, Andy, Anne and the other one are no longer bastards.

Can't lie.. I laughed

I realize I'm a little late to this thread, but I thought it was funny that my best friend and his dad, (first and second generation Irish) when asked by his mom if they wanted to watch the Royal Wedding, started screaming SINN FEIN! at the TV.
