I was diagnosed with mild to moderate CD recently and am currently taking 15mg of Prednisolone and 2400mg of Mesalazine (Asacol) daily. Just wondered if anyone could advise me if its worth taking vitamin supplements aswell?
I've heard that St John's Wort is supposed to help but when I read other threads regarding supplements I just get bamboozled and tbh it's rather head blagging.
My partner and I want to start taking walks at weekends and wondered if this could be a big help too?
Any help would be greatly accepted and appreciated.
Kind Regards

Netsy

Hi there,

I glad you have asked this question as many CD patients don't appreicate the value of supplments products.

It's a must specailly for us, and you have to use it on daily basis.

There are many good supplements produced thru different companies and most of them are really full of help.

I would recomend you one: (which is im currently using, and im lovin' it)

Best luck and keep fighting dear. :)

I'm only aware of St Johns Wort helping in anxiety and depression which may have a benefit to your Crohn's. Also be careful if you do take it as it can react with a wide variety of medicines.

HI nesty, i take supplements centrum and omega 3 fish oils. omega fish oil seemly suspose to relieve inflammation of the intestines. and i drink nutritional drinks like boost and ensure or any other nutritional drinks to get vitimans into me. avoid milk products, take probotic products it helps the bacteria in you intestines to fight of bad bacteria and keep it under control. some people swear by Aloe Vera pills it apparently suspose to help smooth the digestive tract and make digestion easier. that is some suggestions i have some in the form may have more to suggest.

Hiya Scott,

Thanks for that I do have herrings or pilchards on toast for breakfast at least 2 or 3 times a week and tbh it does help.. I went for a check up today and asked if Minadex tonic could help..Apparently it can so I was told by Annette (Crohns counsellor). Obviously I don't want to be taking loads more than my meds but with me being a newbie I'm trying to help myself longer term and any help or advice I get along the way can only be a bonus. As they say "Every day is a scool day..always learning". Thanks again Scott :)

A great multivitamin for crohnies is a prenatal vitamin. You know the ones that pregnant women are supposed to take? They have extra iron, calcium, and b vitamins, which are things that crohnies need more of. They make gummie prenatals that are easy to chew, and some are available by prescription, so if you have a health plan they are covered.

I also take an extra vitamin D supplement of 2000IU. I take a digestive enzyme with every meal as well. I am waiting for my shipment of ginger and turmeric capsules for added inflammation control. I also take fish oil capsules.

Thanks Lydia, I'll look into those. I'll definately start taking omega 3 fish oil capsules to start with and see how I do.

What a gorgeous little girl Lilly is on that pic.
My Kirsty used to look that cute, she's 20 now and knows everything.lol
Take care
Netsy :)

Lilly is 3 and knows everything. lol. Such a hard age, when they crave the independence but still need you to tie their shoes. The poor child.

Great thread.

I just started to take fish oil this week. Be sure to get enteric coated to avoid fishy burps and to be sure it will get further in your digestive tract.

Does anyone take vitamin e? My GP suggested I take 400mg a day, as I recently had a blood clot scare. Being I have Crohn's and take the pill, he said it would help with circulation and hopefully avoid any issues.

Vitamin E and the Fish oil with help keep your blood running a little thinner. 400 IU is a good dose. Carlson makes an orange flavored fish oil. I swallow them, but Lilly chews one everyday, and it smells like oranges.

This is the one I buy.

St John's Wort has a lot of drug interactions and side effect including GI ones and eye (which are similar to eye issue cause by crohn's)

I took iron for a while but you should get checked for aniema because iron can hurt your stomach. I take B12, D, calcium (which i take at a different time then everything else) and a daily one.

I was speaking with an orthopedist recently and he recommended (not just for me, but anyone) 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D and 1500 mg of Calcium. He said the recommended daily amounts that you see on almost everything were determined back in the 1970s and hadnt been updated since then. With the steroids I have been taking, bone issues were on my mind.

Its better to take a Calcium Magnesium combo with the vitamin D. Magnesium helps absorb calcium better along with the vitamin D. Magnesium is also really important for women all around. Good for cramps and PMS and fatigue.

Better absorbtion - good idea
Cramps and PMS - My wife would be shocked if this were a side effect of Crohn's for me :ylol2:
Fatigue: Major issue for me right now.

I will try it! Thanks for the feedback!

LOL Maybe share the Cal-Mag with her.

Hi, I was doing some research prior to my first iron infusion and I had to ask... What eye issues are caused by Crohn's?

The doc says I have very low protein and I'm anemic and will need iron infusions. Any advice on either?
Thanks!

I take St John's Wort during high stress times. It helps. I do not take them long term.

Blake- eye issues- inflammation of the eyes. Also, malabsorption/malnutrition can cause vision problems that are temporary and go away when health is restored.

Ok thank you.
I have some mild eye floaters, poor vision response, etc. that I blame on staring at the computer screen all day... but I guess it makes sense that it is due to my malnutrition.
I eat practically everything in sight (on the safe list). I have a very big appetite, and I'm still protein deficient and anemic. That sucks.

Crohn's puts you at a much greater risk of high eye pressure and subsequently, glaucoma. Regular (yearly) glaucoma screenings are a very good idea.

My daughter is on iron, MEGA Vit D, Calcium, and used to take fish oil capsules but they are contraindicated by her ITP. I want to add B12 as well.

I should be on supplements, but I don't take any.

eye issues that go along with crohn's are iritis, uveitis and scleritis, basically inflammation. iritis can have no out side appearance but is very painful, uveitis and scleritis will make you red but only a portion of your eye. scleritis you may also get what looks like a small sore on your eye. both are also very painful. All three also makes you photophobic. All three can only be DX by an ophthalmologist especially iritis to be dx an eye doc needs to use a slit lamp.

They are rare in crohn's but more common with other associated illness, they are also more associated with HLA-B27 gene. I have had it on and off (manly on) for 3 years.

they are treated by steroid drops that make your eye pressure higher as well as increases your likely hood of cataracts. I assume the comment by muppet about glaucoma also has to do with steroids.
