We swear by rice bags for tummy pain here. Devynn sleeps with one every night. You can also use them for arthritis, menstral cramps, joint aches and pains.. the list goes on and on. We used to heat one before going in the car when Devynn was in a car seat, and still heat one some times if she's not feeling well and we have to go out into the cold car. I made my Mom a HUGE one that she used to heat before going to bed, so that when she got into her bed it was already warm.
They are super easy to make, and you can always make one using a sock in a pinch. This is a link I found online that is pretty much how I make mine. I use ONE piece of material though, fold it and sew up two sides leaving enough of an opening to put the rice in the last side. I also make a cover, so that it can be washed. I have used lavendar (about two tbsp) and that is very comforting.

Thanks, not very good at sewing but I might be able to manage that. We only have the plug in kind of heating pad but this would be so much better.

They are very easy Jacqui, you could even make one out of a sock in a pinch. I use one piece of material and fold, it makes for easier sewing ;) That way you are only sewing 2.5 sides before adding rice. You fill it a little more than 1/2 way with rice. If you make one, you will love it! I swear.

Alright I'm going to get my craft on and dig my sewing machine out of the garage and give it a go. I may even make one for myself for my knee pain I have :D

You def should! We have about 6 or 7 of them. Both my older daughters have them and I think just about every family member. My brother swears by his for shoulder pain. I made his long and thin so he wraps it across his shoulders. I usually make the covers in cotton or flannel. I've made a few in polar fleece, but you can't feel the heat quite as good. Let me know how they work out!

I love to sew!
This would make cute presents for Christmas next year!

I'll have to try it! White rice I assume?

We make ours with flax seed and cinnamon. Yummy to smell it. Works the same way I just noticed that the flax seed doesn't get that weird smell my rice bags use to get. We use them a lot around her. It is Rowans security when her belly hurts even if I don't warm it bc of fevers, the weight alone helps her feel better.

Farmwife, yes white long grain is best! They make AWESOME gifts!!
Kimmidwife, you are welcome! :)
Myreinhard, yes Devynn uses them ALL the time!

You can use just about any grain, even oatmeal, and add any herbs or spices or essential oils. Cinnamon or cloves smell nice.

I've heard that, but have only ever tried rice. It would be interesting to try a few different things. I love the lavendar with the rice.

I used to have a rice one, but I have seen corn ones as well. I no longer have a microwave, though, so I have a regular heating pad now.

My oldest daughter didn't have a microwave for a while when she moved in with a friend. She said not being able to use the rice bag, was the worst part of going without! lol

LOL! The clear button quit working on my last one and I was uber frustrated at the fact that we live in a disposable society...the manufacturer told me it couldn't be fixed. So my refusal to replace it was partially in rebellion. I dislike the taste of food from them...and don't miss it at all, although I have a friend that refuses to visit until I get one-calls me archaic. Her loss LMAO.

We are a big fan of the rice bag too. I LOVE that they don't get cold in the night like a hot water bottle. I think we made ours out of barley.

Izzi's mom, lol her loss for sure!!
Twiggy, yeah I love that they don't get cold too. I wouldn't mind trying other things, maybe when I run out of rice lol

Um...yeah...how do you sew?

They sound neat and would make an awesome gift for family members. If only I could figure out that sewing thing.

Angie: we don't have a microwave either! Well we do in the guest apartment but the only thing we use that for is popcorn and bacon. Since O got CD we don't pop much corn and since we went clean not much bacon either.

I sew mine on a sewing machine, but I've done them by hand as well. You would def need a microwave to heat them up :(

Yeah unfortunately I can't even sew a button. Pathetic I know! I had a choice in school...sewing or choral arts and I chose singing becuase it would be much more useful for my broadway career:eek:

Aww poor honey :( I hope she's better real soon. I hate seeing them sick, and hearing about them being sick or having pain :(
Devynn's been feeling great for the last few weeks. But last night her eyes looked really dark. They aren't anywhere near as dark today, but she has circles and said she's feeling not so great. My older three have all had the flu (since Sat, falling like dominoe), so I am hoping and praying its not that. Devynn and I both got flu shots in Oct, so hopefully we are either safe.. or if we get it it won't hit as hard? *fingers crossed*

CICT...we pop microwave on the stove...I lifted dietary restrictions last fall as she has no si disease...yippee! and bacon in the microwave...gasp!! I LOVE bacon but we rarely eat it. My mom taught me to sew as well...and Izz made her first pillow (from a well loved pair of pajamas no less)...she still sleeps with it every night  I am not great but can do pillows, blankets, and the kids and I did appliqued tees for valentines day last year!

Thats awesome! Devynn loves to sew too. She has made blankets and pillows for the pets lol She has made some doll clothes.. She learned to sew a basic pillow on my machine.
