Oh, Linda, I was pleasantly surprised about the low energy bill this month. I've not really used it like we normally do. It is somewhat mild this year. I feel for you and what an insight into winters in Minnesota. Poor you. Do you have spikes on the shoes to walk on ice? Sounds awful
No spikes on the shoes! But we have several different levels of outerwear. My coat is rated to -30F (which I think is similar to -30C). my son has 2 sets of boots, coats and snow pants, so that when one is wet, he can wear the other. Our radiator is always covered in gloves, mittens, coats, etc.
Fortunately, where I live in Minnesota, we don't get a lot of snow. For most of January, it is too cold to snow, as the air is too cold to hold moisture. It feels like whenever it warms up, we get snow.
I also have winter/summer mats for the car. And I have to wash the car so much in the winter to keep the road salt from making it rust. Whenever the temperature is below 0F, they have signs on the road warning that even if it hasn't snowed, the roads are icy because car exhaust freezes to the road, causing black ice.
Oh, and every winter we battle ice dams. They aren't too bad yet this year, because we insulated the crap out of our attic and we haven't had any warm temperatures, but the way our house was built means that there isn't a way to really avoid them.
But one advantage to living here is really appreciating nice weather. There are a ton of lakes in both St. Paul and Minneapolis, and whenever the weather is nice, everyone goes to them, or other outdoor rec areas. Unfortunately, this winter, even with all the snow we've had, we haven't been able to really enjoy it because it has been too cold.
