Hi. I was diagnosed with Crohn's a year ago at age 48 and never had any digestive issues at all my entire life up until then. I just wondered if anyone else had that kind of experience because most people on the forum seem to get it at a young age or they have always had issues that they thought were IBS or something.

I was diagnosed Nov 1, 2010 and I'm 54. Like yourself, I never had any trouble prior to this either. (The only time I had any trouble was when I ate blue cheese, I would get tummy cramps and D about 8 hours later. But that's it! )

I have always been very healthy. I don't even catch the flu very often. Maybe once in every five years. I always thought of myself as having a great immune system. Well, now I have an over active immune system in my gut! :-( Wonder if their is a tie there!

I was in the same boat...not exactly middle aged when I was diagnosed (I was 36), but I hadn't had any problems prior to that either. It doesn't run in my family.

I was 40, my birthday to be exact, took 5 years to figure it out. I had no problems all of my life but now that I know, I had other things going on that are consistent with crohns. I get ulcers in my mouth, I have always gotten strange little red sores on my legs, they came then went. the ulcers in my mouth were intermittent most of my life but they killed tissue when they appeared. Dentist always looked down their nose at me like I didnt take care of my teeth, they do not understand at all what those damn ulcers can do inside your mouth.

I was diagnosed a year ago at 41. No family history except IBS. Think I have that too.

My Mom was told just last year that she has (asymptomatic) crohns'/colitis.....she is in her 60's.....

Sara, did you take any hormones in the year before your diagnosis? I took the birth control pill for the first time, so I was just wondering.

Mary and Cindy, I'm the same way with family history, except for my youngest daughter. She got it out of the blue a couple of years ago and now me. I have searched the family tree extensively and there is not history of any autoimmune illness. So weird.

No, I didn't. The last time I took birth control pills was back when I was first married (I was 27) so 28 years ago. And have taken nothing like that since. Actually the only medication I have ever been on is a anti-b once every 3 or 4 years. I have been blessed to be very healthy.

I got sick with diarrhea Feb 24 06. It never went away and I lost a ton of weight ( I was also nursing a 4 month old) by April 1, I had confirmed via a biopsy crohns. Its been hell ever since with constant diarrhea except for the 7 months on remicade. No family history. and no tummy issues before I got sick.. out of the blue!

I'm 56 and just got dianosed. Had a colonoscopy four years ago and it was fine. Go figure. However I am grateful I didn't have it while I was younger. All of you youngsters have my greatest respect. You are facing life with quite a challenge.

Hat tip to you all.

I was diagnosed May this year (i'm 36) no symptoms prior to this then after 1 month of abdominal pain I had a CT scan which showed IBD in the terminal ileum. I then suffered a perforation in June and just had a small bowel resection 2 weeks ago, so a bit of a rollercoaster. I'm now pretty much symptom free at the mo.

I was on pentasa 4gms and prednisolone (30mgs then tapered) for 6 months prior to surgery and since the op i'm off all medication... YIPPEE ,although i'm due to see the GI on fri so he might want to put me on a maintainence drup (hopefully not!!) also i might need B12 injections in the future.

I'm undiagnosed and I feel like I might hit middle age before I get a diagnosis, if that counts (I'm 31 now, have had symptoms for just over a year). No family history of IBD either unless you go back to my great-grandfather who had UC.

I was 60 when I was diagnosed... like STLGirl I have been pretty healthy all my life until I had a massive heart attack and then a 5 bypass surgery in summer 2009. The it all started to fall apart about a year later and now I have Crohns in the transverse colon and lower esophagus and upper stomach..... symptomatic with constipation..... nausea on Imuran and pred 20/day.... Now they are talking about "fatty liver disease" and maybe pancreatitus! Welcome to OLD AGE!

I'm 43 and was diagnosed at 41. I'd been having some mild symptoms for about 6 months before my official diagnosis, which was discovered during a routine colonoscopy. I have had what I suspect was IBS most of my adult life though.

I was diagnosed (finally!) this year at age 47. I have had symptoms of crohns for about 15-20 years though. A few years ago I was told I have IBS but that never seemed right.

Also middle aged -hormone related?

I was 49 when diagnosed with Crohns but had mouth ulcers every month a couple days after my cycle. Kept telling doctors they were related but they told me no way. At the first symptoms of menopause WHAM! Crohns hit me over night. Had terrible couple years but now that menopause is completely over, I feel as good as I always had. No symptoms of Crohns at all.
I have talked to many women who also have symptoms that coincide with their cycle and they ALL were told by their doctors that that it was not related.
Anyone out there have any ideas?
btw - a few docs told me that Crohns affects all the mucus membranes in your body - mouth, esophagus, intestines to ....well, you know.

I just sort of woke up with it one morning last year? I'm 51 now. No Crohn's in the immediate family but lots of other autoimmune diseases. Interesting, Red. I started getting little sores on my legs a couple of years ago. Not sores really, but little circular, red scaly patches that come and go. Seem to have gone now, maybe with the meds?
