Its been a crazy week here. Devynn had her scope on the 23rd. They said nothing looked alarming, her mucous was good, and I should hear from them within 2 weeks.
Thurs (3rd)morning, Devynn fell while skating with her class and fractured her wrist. I didn't get a phone call, I got an email from her teacher at 2:30. She said something to the effect of Deynn fell, she said it was sore but there is no swelling. There is a bruise on her wrist. I picked her up and took her for xrays. It's fractured.
Fri night was my son's (her brother) drama presentation at school. We went and we looked across the audience and saw a guy who is in her favorite show, My babysitter's a vampire. After the show, we saw him in the hall so I asked if we could get a pic. He was very sweet and took two pics, she is STILL giggly! lol :ylol:
Today we went and met up with two moms and their 10 and 11 year old boys, who have colitis. They met at a Crohn's walk 2 years ago and have become best friends. They had a really good time, and it was SO nice to talk to someone who understands. We came home and about an hour later Devynn called me up to the washroom. She has blood in her poop. I told her we need to keep an eye, but not to freak out. But I'm freaking out... do I take her to the ER or just watch? She has NO pain anywhere.

I would suggest you begin logging symptoms and issues and call doc on Monday. Estimate how much blood (i.e., could it be from fissure at rectum?, difficult/hard bowel movement, hemorroid)? Perhaps ease back her diet to bland to keep her belly calmer. Soups are great for that. Hope all goes well

Thank you. I have been documenting everything since the beginning of Jan, and came right down and wrote this down as well. She said her tummy is not sore, but its pretty noisy.

Try doing daily belly rubs for her. Start on the right side (her right side, looking down at belly), which is the ascending colon, and then up around her navel (using that as the center), down the left side and down around to the the right side. This will help reduce inflammation as well by bringing circulation to the area. She may hear more gurgling when that happsn as well, but that is good. Even when in extreme pain, the belly rubs help move things along. I found when in bad pain after eating, I will take my fist (or husband will) and deeply rub in same motion. It seems like food has "stopped" in my belly and the rubs will move it along and relieve pain. A Chinese masseuse showed me this and I have used this for years.

Another helpful stretch is the Bikram Yoga "Wind Removing Pose" (google it) on a daily basis. If she takes daily walks (15-20 min), that will also help keep blood circulating and improving her health.

Hopefully she is taking vitamins to help supplement her diet. I hope she feels better soon. Breaks my heart to hear a little one ill. It is quite frightening for them as well. Be strong.

Is this a new symptom or has she had blood before?

Since she has no pain and I assume there isn't huge amounts of it then new symptom or not I would wait and watch and only go if she developed further acute symptoms and/or she developed severe pain and/or large amounts of blood loss.

Good luck! I hope things settle and it is just a one off!

Dusty. xxx

Thank you Mickey, I will try the belly rub. I googled the wind removing pose and she would prob actually like that. She's not on any vitamins, the dr said she didn't need them. But from what I am reading, she probably does. We go back for her biopsy results soon and I will ask again.

Thank you Dusty, no she has never had blood in her stool before. She has no pain at all, her colour looks good and IMO it wasn't a lot of blood. But its blood.. and it was through the stool. I am just going to watch her and if anything changes, we will go straight in. I am hoping its a one time thing and she is fine tomorrow.

Just wanted to say hope everything is alright. Small comfort but at least it's not a symptom that is making her suffer. Hope you get it sorted.

Samantha, I'm sorry I can't keep up, but is Devyn on any meds right now? I hope it's a one time thing and no action is needed. Good luck!!

Just a thought, but has she taken any pain medicines (or did they give any at the hospital) that could have irritated her gut? Or was she very upset by her accident, stress certainly makes my bleeding worse, even though I only get a little.

Do you know where her Crohn's located? Bright red blood would suggest that it's come from the end of her colon nearest to her anus. If she's not suffering from any pain or other symptoms it could even just be a small tear in her rectum/anus. One of my friends who has no digestive problems and went to his doctor as he sometimes found blood in his bm. After investigation, that's what his doctor suggested it was.

I know I am late to the party, but we regularly have blood while flaring. It's a small to moderate amount...we don't get any additional treatment for it if it's any consolation. That being said, all of the docs are different and I would either call the on call doc or talk to them first thing tomorrow am. :)

Mark, yes she is on Pentasa. 2 pills twice a day. I hope its a one time thing too. Maybe stress from the last few weeks?
Nitty, the only pain meds would have been given over a week ago (23rd, scope). She was upset about her accident, but not overly upset. She was more worried about the upcoming scope, but again that was the 23rd.
Michelle, the blood was red but not bright red. I know they mentioned her Illeum (sp?) in the paperwork from her last scope in 2009. We don't have the results of her newest scope yet.
She has not had a bm yest today, has no pain, no fever and seems to be her normal happy self.

Angie, she appears to feel completely normal so unless anything changes I will wait for her dr or nurse to call me back tomorrow. I have put a call in to their voice mail last night. I'm hoping its a one time thing, she has had quite a bit of stress in the last few weeks. But we've never dealt with blood in her stool before.

Sometimes blood can occur on one time basis. I would not get to freaked out unless it continues. It is good you put the call in to her doctor and will see what they say tomorrow.

DevsMom, Violet had an episode of rectal bleeding after trying Pentasa for 4 weeks in Oct. It's the ONLY time in 3.5 years of having Crohn's that she has had it, and the doc agreed it was from Pentasa.
I've since read others on here say the same. Check it out with her doc.

Thank you Kim, I am hoping it was a one time thing. She hasn't had another bm today, so I can't check. But she feels fine.
imaboveitall, I put in a call to her dr. She seems fine. No fever, no pains.. and no bm today to check. She's been on Pentasa for 2 yrs 3 mos and has never had any bleeds.

Maybe a small fissure?
V had one at dx that didn't cause bleeding (that we noticed) but was only visible when you really examined her closely.
I was trying to get her to accept a Phenergan suppository and she said it hurt like crazy and that's how we found it.

Hmm.... I'm not sure. She's getting to that age where she is very private, but I will have a look when she gets out of the tub. She's soaking with her arm wrapped in a bag to keep her cast safe lol

I know. Looking "there" is an icky feeling but V's was so hidden I had to really look to see it...then I could see why the suppository was killing, there was a small crack like a big paper cut. Hers didn't bleed like I said but they often do. And the blood therefrom is bright red and small amts.

I just recalled a funny story:
When V was in preschool she had her first suppository (acetaminophen) and when returning to school after being out sick she announced loudly upon entering:
" I was so sick my mom had to put an auditorium in my butt!" :ylol:

I looked and didn't see anything, shes not red or anything. Your poor V :(
lmao at her story! lol Kids are hilarious.

Hi Devynnsmom,

I remember that we go to the same hospital and IBD clinic. If you are ever in a panic, they do have a number you can call 24/7 and speak directly with a GI. Check if you have the number on the 'information' pamphlet they may have given you.

If you don't see it, PM me and I'll look through my stuff for you.

:)

Thank you Tess, I found it :) I heard back from her nurse this morning. She said her biopsies "looked good" and not to worry about a bit of blood. She said if it happens again, take her to my gp and tell him to do a stool sample. Seh goes back to her GI clinic Mar 29th.
