Talk on latest research on the psychology of happiness
I wanted to post this link here as it shows me that we can all be truly happy even if we have this disease. The talk is about the latest research on the psychology of happiness, which is a relatively new area of study that we can all benefit from by learning how we can be happier in our lives.
The talk says how there are three things contribute to happiness: pleasure, being in states of total immersion and having meaning in our lives. While we may all think that pleasure is the most important requirement for happiness, it actually seems that the things that lead to long-term happiness are doing activities that create meaning in our lives and allow us to totall immerse ourselves in doing them.
Other things that can make us happier are thoughts or acts of gratitude.
I mention these things as no matter what any of us are going through, I am sure you can think about at least one thing to be grateful for. It can be someone in your life like a family member, someone from your past or even a special memory you are grateful for experiencing. Also, it is common for us to think about all that we are missing with this disease or when we are going through a flair. This does nothing but makes us feel worse. Instead, we should try to direct our energies toward activities that we find enjoyable and require a fair amount of skill so that we become immersed in them when we participate in them. This can mean anything from doing a puzzle to forms of exercise (if you are able to) to any other hobby you can think of.
If you find these things interesting then I encourage you to watch the video. I have posted before about a book that also speaks of the importance of meaning Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl , which I also heavily recommend.
