It's weird because its located "In" the left buttcheek where like to bone would be.

Its not a "boil" yet. Its just kind of a "bump" or swollen and bothers me to sit at times.

I mean how would that happen?

Who even knows if it is.. It always gets worse when Im on Narcotics for pain. I think it gets better with Flagyl, but don't really just want to start my flagyl.. it sometimes makes me sick.

Thanks.

My son has them all of the time. His are from another autoimmune disease, that can also occur with Crohn's. Hidradenitis Suppurativa is what he has.

It does not necessarily mean you have the disease, but just answers the question of whether it is possible or not to have an abscess in the butt cheek.

Dan

(Not exactly sure that I am saying everything correctly, factually - but I will give it a shot.)

It could be a fistula. A tunnel from one place to another. I think it technically called an abcess while it makes the bump, and then called a fistula when it breaks through the skin. I had one on my butt cheek. It was treated with antibiotics for a while, then it filled faster than it drained. They were going to put a drain in it, but I was lucky enough that it didn't work, and they just removed the whole thing.

It could be just nothing too, but I would definitley get it checked out.

I've had that. I found sitz baths helped in as hot water as you can stand. It will burst eventually and the relief is amazing! I had one so bad one time I couldn't even sit. I took 2 sitz baths and it burst...it was gross, but the pressure relief was worth it! I haven't had one since...

oops...sorry for the double post....my computer's not being my friend today :(

Yes it does sound like a fistula/abcess.

I've had quite a few in my "Cheeks". You do need to start the antibiotics. The longer you leave it, the more painful it will become.

You'll also end up with an infection/fever. It's not pleasent, start flagyl as soon as you can.

Haven't really asked my doctors whether I should start it but i think they would tell me to regardless.

Yes! I had an abscess in my right butt cheek. The doctors said it was too small to drain and that I'd have to be on an antibiotic called Zosyn (I.V.) in order to keep the infection contained until it got to be big enough to drain. It took about 4 months to get big enough and I knew it was time to go in when I could no longer sit down. When they operated on it they said the infection went all the way around my tailbone into my left butt cheek. Unfortunately I got a fistula from the surgery and was then pooping uncontrollably from the incision point. This can be repaired so if it happens to you (God forbid) something can be done about it. I had to have ileostomy surgery, another matter entirely, so they took care of it then. I was told the abscess was as a result of my poor health and lack of nutrition. Hope this helps you. Sharon J.

I have what feels to be a bump growing on the inside of my cheek/crack. I've been wondering about it. I asked about it on here a while back. Suggested the same things. I'm still not sure what it is. Dr had said it was a hemorrhoid that hasn't urfaced yet. He gave me this cream stuff.... Nystatin and Triaminolone Acetonide Cream USP. I have no idea what the heck it does. It does feel better when it "acts" up. I use it every once in a while. It seems to work. So I thought I would add my two cents. I included a link to the stuff on the drug site.

I have had them as well and you might want to be careful about really hot water, it might irritate the skin around the area and make things worse. Any time I was hospitalized for them I was advised to just use warm water.
:)

Go to doc, definitely-you don't want to treat something when you're not sure what it is. I agree with needing antibiotics, too-I've had cysts that turned really ugly really fast, when you take immunosuppressants everything can get out of hand fast.

Update: Went to the doctor today. And It turns out she said it WAS NOT an abscess or fistula.. Weird right?

she said It is from sitting too much and because im real thin. Its a Sore/Bruise/buttocks sore whatever. I was givin A&D ointment.

I love my G.P.

Thats great news kasper!

Last thing any of us needs is an abcess.

I have Hidradenitis Suppurativa that Dan Bergy mentioned and had quite a severe flare up of it before Xmas. Thankfully it has settled again but it can takes months to heal. Sometimes ends up with surgical drainage. My main areas are under my arms, hips and lower abdomen. Very occasionally I will get them on my neck, breasts or thighs.

Have to say though that being on Remi has made a huge difference to it overall and dont always have "at least one" on the go all the time now. More like one every few months which is such a relief!

As I said best news ever this morning from you. At least now you can focus on building yourself up a bit and know what you are dealing with.

Hope you continue upwards.

((hugs))

OMG! Kasper...I am so happy its not an abcess. I am petrified of those darn things. But, at least I see that there are others doing okay. I am sorry that you are sore from being thin...is there anything you can add to your diet to help you? I am just curious. I hope you are feeling better! Sue

ok so this freaking thing is still here.
It's not A pilonial cyst or an abscess etc.. theres NOTHING breaking the skin.

it just looks and feels like i got PUNCHED or kicked in the butt cheek and it swelled up.

its gotten 100% better since i went down from 25mcg patch fentanyl to 12mcg..

why is this happening? sluggishness? bacterial overgrowth? pressure on the butt from the colon?

RAAAAAAWWRRR i cant handle it. sitting hurts

I have an abcess on my left butt cheek that has grown to a size bigger than a golf ball. It has been so painful to sit, stand, walk and lay down. I have had so much trouble with it, its unbelieveable. The werid thing is I'm only 16 and can safely say this is the worst pain I've ever been in!
Today I went to the doctors and was told it was an abcess, I have been put on antibiotics and was told that if they hadn't started to work by friday to go back to be referred for a surgical drain. I started on the antibiotics and the pain has got incredibly worse! I feel hopeless, I can't stand, sit or lay down without being in an incredible amount of pain.
What am I to do as I have never had surgery before and am terrified due to all the horror stories where hospitals have gone terribly wrong?

Tipsy Lipsy if the pain is unbearable you can go to the er. I have been in for urgent draining before - its not fun but it will help with the pain. Did you see a colorectal surgeon? My docs have after hours answering service maybe yours does too. It could be that you can call and they will have the on call doc call you back and give you advice.

Have you tried a sitz bath?

My doctors doesn't have an after hours service, and I want to avoid them draining it. I woke up this morning to find my-self covered in blood because it had developed a hole.
I have tried normal warm salt baths which only seem to relax me whilst I'm in the bath. :(

The sitz bath is supposed to help it drain and help with the pain. Is the pain better now that it is draining itself? Have they checked to see if you have a fistula?

I have an abscess that keeps filling and infecting. Monday they had to scrape it all out. It sucks but if you don't take care of it the thing will keep growing.

Sailorluna...that sounds terrible! I just posted 'major pain in the butt' in general discussion. You seem to have some knowledge with abscesses, as do a lot of you, so if you see this, could you please tell me your opinion. Thank you:)

I hope you feel better soon, it's so anoying not to sit/stand ect without constantly being aware of your butt. Bowels I think are worse pain, but the butt is just painfully annoying :/

I also have the same thing happening in my butt cheek. Its been there now for a couple of months now. My gp started me out on cipro and flagyl, and gave me 2 rounds of it. It didn't make much difference. I am also on 25mg prednisone and 150mg Imuran. The thing is, the abscess feels different everyday. Somedays i can barely sit on that side, other days feel better. I also feel i probably have a fistula as well. I am so terrified of it opening, it feels so close to the skin now. What happens if it does open?? I have no clue whats going to happen or what to do with it??? Its so tender to even touch at this point.

Hi Hurla,
I understand, the idea of it opening sounds scary. In my opinion its a good thing, when it opens the fluid inside will drain out and the pain should back off a huge amount. I think most of the pain is the pressure of it not having anywhere to go.

I am surprised that the docs have not drained it yet. How long have you been on antibiotics?

Well, Hi there,

thank god you all suffer the same as me, lol! I hate to say this but i always keep my abcess to myself, that is i don't like to tell the gastro blokes. Its deep iinside the right cheek. you can't see it on the outside really but hell it hurts to sit, stand, walk or even lay down. its also always in the right side, exactly the same place. so recurring really.

I put up with it although i find it painful down the right leg to the knee. so i think its probably hit a nerve or something. Then after some time of build up, you know how it is, you're on the bog with those contractions despite diarrhoea challenging the speed of light, and suddenly it bursts, yayy, and omg the relief. out it all comes.

Hey Spooky,
They (abscesses) totally suck! I would be too nervous to not tell the GI. I read too much about sepsis.

Plus, when mine get bad the fever comes and 103 is no fun. Last time I tried to ignore it I ended up in the hospital for 3 days.

If it keeps coming back do you think you have a fistula or is it just not draining all the way then infecting and refilling?

Um, this isn't pleasant to say but everytime it empties and fills the bugger gets bigger. Monday they cut it open and cleaned it out, i dont know how big the abscess cavity it but when i took the packing out there sure was alot.

Hey sailorluna,
I was on antibiotics for about a month but have been off them for over a month. My GI says he wants to try and control all my inflammation and symptoms before he deals with the abscess. I was newly diagnosed in january this year. He thinks the Imuran will help. The thing is im scheduled to go on vacation on thursday for my best friends wedding. I am terrified that something terrible will happen to this abscess/fistula of mine. What do you suggest i carry along with me in case it opens up?? I have no idea how much will drain, or what to use to clog it up?

ooooeeeerrr,

you just scared me there, Sailor! omg, yes but i'm used to the fever and used to the butt pain, not to mention leg. i really don't know. butt its so embarrassing to tell of these things, only you people really understand!!

Hurla,
I would bring some panty liners. If it starts to drain it should be all you need. It isn't like its a huge amount that comes out but it could be messy. You may want to have them give you a prescription for antibiotics for your trip - that way you have it if you get bad. I always get nervous traveling since I got this stupid abscess. I get fevers quick and always worry about ending up in an ER away from home.

I think it is interesting that your GI wants to wait on dealing with it. My GI wont even talk to me about mine they just send me to the colorectal surgeon, and he is pretty serious about making sure it is draining.

Spooky,
It is embarrassing - I totally get that. However those guys are used to it. My surgeon says he sees this everyday.

It makes me worry that you say that you are used to the fever and pain. You can get used to anything but that does not make it ok. I got used to vomiting in the days leading up to my obstruction. I don't mean to scare you but sepsis is serious and can kill a person. Maybe google it and take a look.

The best advice I can give you is to check out the Puss and Blood forum string from KWalker. Seeing what he went through with his abscess scared the hell out of me.

I think he left his until it was the size of a tennis ball and had a 7 inch incision and a long time in the hospital.

Sorry if I sound like an alarmist. I don't mean to. Good luck, I hope it stops bugging you.

I def think i should talk to my GI about the surgery, although i'm super scared.
I will have loads of pantyliners in stock, don't know how it will work in a bathing suit, must have lots of cover-ups.What we have to go through to be "normal"!!!!
you think i will need anything more than panty liners? I thought i was going to need gauze and tape and the works....??

It depends. Some people need more than panty liners. I use these foam squares. No tape or anything i just tuck it between my cheeks and it stays just fine. Some folk do use gauze the same way - i find it to be less comfortable than the foam. They have the foam dressings next to the gauze dressings at the drug stores.

i have hidradenitis, i get "lumps" in my bikini area, under my arms and under my breasts. the ones under my arms can get so bad that i cannot lift my arm for a day or so. sometimes i will move in the night and the pain will wake me up! i can no longer use deodorant because it makes my skin so tight and the next day my lumps will be twice the size. when they drain its pus and blood and immediately feel better. i have been using witch hazel wipes to help calm the skin. i rarely shave which is embarrassing for a woman and ex swimmer who is used to shaving about 3x a week. does anyone have a remedy for them to go away besides hot compresses/hot showers? my dermatologist prescribed me clindamycin which skrinks the lumps but does not rid them completely. and i hate the scarring that goes a long with it! ugh! as if having crohn's wasnt enough....

I had/have a fistula that made its way from my ileum to the skin about three inches above my tail bone. My GI always brushed off my complaints of pain in my back and when it started to get close to the skin it turned into a painful red lump that would swell up and get really painful and then almost disappear. I finally got a really high fever and started to feel like my vision was swimming. My friend finally convinced me to go the Emergency room. (mind you, i still had not connected it to my Crohn's. I used to get random abcesses on my legs when i was a kid and just thought that's what it was.) The cut it open and drained it at the ER. It stayed open, on and off, for about two years. I had to keep it covered, usually with maxi pads and tape cut into a square because it would drain sporadically. But it finally healed with 6-mp and pretty strict adherence to the SCD diet. That was five years ago and its a pretty nasty scar on my back, but it never opened again. its nice to write this down. I just joined this forum and I've basically never talked to anyone about this except my husband - who was the only person who ever saw it. Sorry to hear that anyone else has ever had to endure this, but glad to hear i'm not totally alone. Just wanted to say, if you ever think you have an access, get it checked out and get on antibiotics. I spent years suffering from pain and fever and i had no idea what i was dealing with. in hindsight, its super scary to think what could have happened (sepsis, etc.) but also, bodies can heal. Its slow, and frustrating and there were many times i thought i would have to live with that draining wound on my back for the rest of my life, but it got better.

Hello Maggie :) Just wanted to say a big warm welcome to the forum, and very glad you found us. Thanks also for sharing your experience. When you're new to the IBD game especially, it can be difficult sometimes to spot the signs that somethings brewing so sharing our stories is really important.

I totally agree with Sailorluna I had my third abscess in 5 weeks drained a few days ago - and yes it was not a lot of fun. But you need to get these things seen and taken care of. In my most recent abscess I waited longer than I should have (only 1 day) and it doubled in size.

When I go to the ER I ask to see the Surgical Resident on call. Sometimes they make me see the ER doctor first but I will not let them cut me open. I am polite but firm that I need to see a surgeon (and preferably a colorectal surgeon). You need to get a surgeon because they can tell if it is a fistula.

My first two abscesses were drained by ER docs - then surgeons had to come down and make the incision larger and re-drain the infection. It was awful. So painful. So now I am sure that the right person does it first. Hopefully this little bit of information helps one of you so you don't have to go through this.

Try to keep in mind that you know your body best and it is ok to make recommendations to health care professionals - they are not geniuses - and they don't have a lot of experience with Crohn's usually.
