I was reading about the benefits of coconut (having just spent a half hour fighting with one!) to try to find out if it is good for you. I was surprised to see Crohn's mentioned. Has anyone had success with coconut? I love fresh coconut!

Here is where I was reading about it http://www.earthincommon.com/coconut_02-article.html

Let me know what you guys think!

wow - you can eat coconut with no problems?!

lol, i'm amazed, and jealous. i used to love coconut pre-Crohn's - but its now one of the sure foods to give me terrible belly ache and blockages :(

Coconut has some unique properties, but I really do not know to what degree it can be of benefit for Crohn's.

It is antibacterial, anti fungal and anti viral in properties. How that translates into helping with Crohn's depends on many variables, one of them, how potent is it in reality?

I use Coconut oil for some cooking, and will take eat a big spoonful of it once in a while, but I have no symptoms to measure effectiveness against.

It is a very high energy food, as it is high in fat and easily absorbed. A very healthy food in my opinion.

My son has coconut everyday, he could tolerate it fine while he was flaring also. Coconut milk goes in his shake in the morning, he's on SCD so all his baked goods are made with coconut flour, eggs etc are fried in coconut oil, flakes of coconut go in his cookies. Unfortunately he cannot tolerate pineapple, so no pina colada's. Full fat coconut milk makes wonderful ice cream too if you have a countertop ice cream maker.

I do not think it helped his Crohn's at all, but as Dan said it is a good high energy food with anti inflammatory/fungal properties, so it won't hurt. Plus he can use the calories in the full fat stuff.
If you are using canned milk or coconut flakes (not fresh) you'll probably want to check and make sure there are no sulphites added as I understand many are sensitive to them. I use organic, just to be safe.

We were told by a naturopath to use coc. oil for cooking. I love stir fry so I use it some and evoo, can't say it's made any difference for EJ but his crohn's symptoms have all been very mild since January!!

ooooh

I love coconut yogurts, I am fine so long as theyre eaten in moderation, one day I ate 2 that day then 2 the next and I had tummy pain for a day after

We have been using coconut oil for cooking and it works great. I have even used it to replace butter in recipes. What is nice is if you use it for cooking it doesn't make the food greasy like other oils tend to.
