Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had experience of what I am about to have done!
I have a peri anal and recto vaginal fistulas, with just one internal opening. 3 weeks ago I had setons put in both of them. I am now comfortable And the fistulas are draining well, I'm even not too freaked out about the setons!
However, my surgeon now wants to partially lay open both tracts and put in shorter setons with a view to eventually getting rid of the fistulas, depending on muscle involvement ( none of this could be seen or done at the first op due to all the inflammation).
My question is, how bad will the pain be after laying open, I'll have an open wound next to my anus and the bottom of my vagina and how will I ever keep it clean or pain free. I am dreading it so much!!!

I this done in conjunction with seton placement for 2 fistulas, plus an additional sinus that was cleaned out and stitched off. Not going to lie, it was painful, every movement hurt, I couldn't even roll over in bed. The pain was bad for 2 weeks, then gradually got better, took about a month before I could sit comfortably though.

Bryonyboo,
I had two fistulotomies, laying open of a perianal fistula.

The first was moderately painful for the first two days then got less and less every day after. I returned to work in two days.

The second however was really bad for the first week. Then slowly better by the second. Better by the third. I was out of work for two weeks.

I do not think you are having any thing as bad as they were.

Take the pain meds and MAKE SURE TO BATHE, epson salts help. Bathing was my only relief.

Best of Luck.

So I'm looking at a couple of weeks of pain then!! I hoping its not too bad, it's difficult when I am on my own with my two year old daughter, work is the easy option, ha ha!!
Thanks for your comments and I shall definitely be investing in some Epsom salts!!
