My brother was “officially” diagnosed with Chron 3 years ago. However his “torture” is lasting much longer, basically since he was 15 years old. Throughout that time the most used diagnose was irritable bowel syndrome. Today my brother is 28 years old and his state is, “there are good, and there are bad days” (like for everyone I guess). But the fact is that in the past 2 years he is most definitely losing weight. He came from 75 kg to 69 kg, and is balancing around that weight, based on his condition. At the moment he is taking Mesalazine (2 x 1g). He is feeling better, but he feels constantly tired, as he says. He is also taking L-Glutamine 500 mg. For his occasional burning pain in stomach he uses an antacid drug called Gastal (Aluminii hydroxidum – magnesii carbonas gel Magnesii hydroxidum). Occasionally he takes VSL3 probiotics. However, he doesn’t use them regularly as they sometimes make his condition worse.
What other probiotics would you guys recommend? What is the “top of the line” for Crohn's?
Recently we came along a company NOW foods. We were interested in following products:
- Ulcetrol - 60 Tablets
- Clinical GI Probiotic - 60 Veg Capsules
- Beta 1,3/1,6- D -Glucan 100 mg - 90 Vcaps

But, as usual we can’t buy that products in our country.

Did anyone try some of that products?

Last summer his doctor put him on a Budosan treatment, but after one cycle he took him “off”, since he didn’t feel that good while taking them.
As for diet goes, he eats as a person in his condition should. Nothing fried, rice, potato, gluten free pasta, chicken, veal, vegetables. He doesn’t eat much fruit though. I’m trying to convince him to start eating fruit first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. But he says that is not possible, because in the morning he feels this “empty hole” in his stomach and he’s afraid fruit doesn’t suit him well that early in a day.
And the latest addition to the list of his problem is an anal abscess, that he had surgically treated, and is still in a healing process.
Why am I writing all this? Well I’m hoping someone would recognize some part of himself in my brother, and could give me some piece of a advice or a pointer what helped them, or improved their condition.

Well according to his doctor, his state isn't alarming, and basically she tells to go out there and to life his life. But the fact is he doesn't feel OK. I'm aware that a lot of that is related to his mental condition that varies, just as does his “health state”.
His doctor isn’t giving him any particular medication since all his inflammation indicators are very low.

How long since the absces
s? Everyone is different. I had surgery in 1989 for both hemorrhoids and a fistula. I took a while to heal and this was a clue to the doctor that I had Crohn's Disease. As far as fruits , for me personally, bananas are the only fruit I feel safe with. Keep us updated and I hope you get answers soon.

5-Asa is not an approved therapy for crohns for a reason
It doesn't treat all the layers of the intestine just the top layer.
Can he try an immunosuppressants such as 6-mp/Aza or Mtx ?

His state may not be "alarming" to her but if he is in constant pain and tired all the time that is no way to live. Many are against biologics but if it brings one a better quality of life then why not try it. They have helped me and I am happy and thankful for that. Do some research on them and fight for the right to be on them if he chooses.
As for the fruit, I can't eat any fruits except bananas either. If he wants to increase fruit maybe in a smoothie? I mix frozen fruit with yogurt and almond milk for a shake....very tasty. Veggies are the same. No raw veggies at all but certain ones are ok peeled and well cooked.
Does he have a drain for his abscess? There is group on here which offers much help for fissures, fistulas and abscess...take a peek. I know for me and many others....keeping it super clean by soaking in very warm water for 10 min or so and washing after every washroom visit is key. Also keeping that area very dry is important too. I always keep a gauze in between my butt cheeks to soak up anything that may drain so it's not wet in that area.
Most Dr's in my opinion don't understand what we go through. We have to do our research be knowledgeable of our disease and fight for our health. Good luck to your brother!!!
