So, my daughter had a baseball sized perianal abscess back in April. She had surgery to have it drained and spent five nights in the hospital, then left with a PICC line. Here's my problem. My daughter is starting to feel pain in the same spot. It's a different kind of pain, but it's still pain. Should I just wait it out a day or to? She currently doesn't have a fever or any other symptoms. The pain also comes and goes, and is not constant.

By the way, the MRI results came back normal, but the tech only emphasized and reported on the small bowel, not the rectum. :-/

I would prob call the dr in the morning if she's still feeling any kind of pain. Better to be safe than sorry IMHO :) I hope the pain goes away.

So sorry your daughter is having to deal with this! Abscesses are NO fun. My 12 yr old has dealt with one since 12/2011 that we still closely monitor.

A few questions....has your daughter's abscess area totally healed on the outside? Is it flat and smooth? Red? Tender to the touch? Has she or is she on any sort of antibiotic like Flagyl?

I would look at it real closely to see if there's anything showing on the outside. I'd call the doc just in case they may want to start her up on an antibiotic. My son has been able to feel it "coming on" too. If it does come back it doesn't always mean it will have to be surgically drained. Sometimes they will start to drain on their own or they can be "encouraged" to drain on their own.

My son is currently on Remicade which has helped with the healing of his. Hope hers doesn't turn into anything big!

When you came home from the hospital did you have to pack the wound daily with gauze? Sometimes the front of the wound can heal while the inside is still open which can cause another abscess to form. I hope it's nothing but i would see the doctor. If something is brewing, better to catch it while its small

How are things going jaems?

As has been stated above there could be a few scenarios.

Also if the wound is still open and there are no other signs or symptoms of infection etc then pain can still be present simply because of the type of wound and its location.

My son also developed Perianal Disease from his Crohn's Disease. He developed two fistulas that also had to be surgically drained. He also had two silk stents put in to help with drainage.

Like Mom2oneboy said... Flagyl was also prescribed for my son and he spent about 2.5 years on it.

I would definitely recommend having it looked at. Better to know that it's nothing than to have to fight another abscess.

Hoping for the best for you and your daughter! :)
