So, does anyone else not manage to get drunk?

O.k. firstly my meds colestyramine, and calcium supplements for "osteo" something that I cant find on the internet, probably as a consequence of steroids, both preds and another I cant remember right now.

I went out for the first time in ages; Im always in pain and expect to be more so If I do lots of walking, money is always short so going out is rarely an option.
As the pain is a regular fixture and my Birthday coming up my girlfriend "took me out" as an experiment.
K my problem is, I could not get drunk, at least with normal financial realities, im fairly tiny weight wise and though I always remember havign a reasonable tolerance to alcohol, while out on this occasion drink for drink it just wasnt happening, I drink vodka, 3 drinks in quick succession had an almost noticable effect and by the end of the night I was in lots of pain, almost completely sober, feeling a bit sicky, depressed and massively needed the loo.
I pretty much expected all of the above except the being sober part.

this may sound silly but im curious if others have found this to be the case, id really like to know, Im not sure i remember the last time i got drunk and as such am not really sure how it is possible for me to have not felt drunk.

excuse the silly post.

happy early birthday. i dont know anything about this, sorry. but i am interested in hearing other results.

I am in school to become a registered dietitian, however i have only just began my studies. I say the following in respect to what I have learned so far, so hopefully I can be a reliable source...

The majority of the alcohol you drink is absorbed in the small intestine, with only about 20% absorbed in the stomach. If your IBD is in the small intestine and your body is having trouble absorbing nutrients (including alcohol), it would explain why you felt sober.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!

I don't think it is silly at all. I found the same thing at New Years. Haven't drank since.

Oh yes, Happy Birthday! I forgot to say :)

Evidence im awake when I shouldnt be is that when i saw the birthday wishes I got confused and thought it must be my birthday already. I had to check the date : O i am on the ball.
Thank you for your pre emptive birthday wishes.
and also for your feedback, though not for making me worried it was already my birthday.

any chance you'd be able to ask a tutor about this specifically if they have any awareness or even if there are any proper studies on alcohol and various IBD

Three drinks wouldn't get me drunk and my boyfriend wouldn't even get a buzz off of that amount. Some people have a higher tolerance to alcohol and you may be one of them no matter how big or small you are. Everyone is different. Could IBD be related, maybe but I highly doubt that's the main reason.

Haha, I'm sorry for making you think it was your birthday...it was not my intention to worry you, only to send happy birthday vibes ;)

I wish I had seen this a week ago, because then I would have been able to ask my nutrition professor about it. Our final exam was this past Wednesday, though, so I don't have class anymore, at least not for this semester.

However, I will soon be starting to see a dietitian for my own needs (actually, the dietitian I will be seeing is the nutrition professor I just mentioned!), and I will try to remember to ask her about this if I get the chance.

Generally, though, I can tell you that alcohol is most definitely absorbed mostly in the small intestine. It's not surprising that someone with IBD would have trouble absorbing certain nutrients, alcohol included. Alcohol does not need to be digested -- it is simply absorbed right into the blood stream. Using the figure I posted above -- 20% alcohol absorbed in the stomach and 80% alcohol absorbed in the SI -- you're blood alcohol level would only be about 20% of what it would normally be if your SI is not absorbing nutrients properly.

I just went ahead and tried to do a bit of research and couldn't find anything in regards to IBD inhibiting alcohol absorption. From the looks of it, there haven't been any studies on that; everything I have found seems to focus just on that alcohol consumption may worsen IBD symptoms.

But like I said, if your SI is inflamed and not absorbing nutrients properly, there is no reason to think that alcohol is an exception, especially considering most of its absorption takes place in the SI. I will try to ask my dietitian if I get the chance. I will also be working with a different dietitian over the summer as a research assistant so I will see if i can get her answer for this as well.

Oh -- and something I forgot to say; I turned 18 this past December and so went out to celebrate my first legal drink.

I had 2 vodkas w/ diet sprite and a shot of...rum? I think that's what it was. Anyway, 3 drinks, I expected to get drunk, seeing as I don't really drink. It was a little hard to walk, but I was not tempted to dance on the table nor was I laughing at every joke and I felt nice but barely tipsy. I was having stomach issues then. That does make me wonder how much of an effect that had on it.

I think anyone who hasnt drunk for a year is supposed to feel something after 3 vodkas drunk in quick succession.
which wasnt my problem nor what i asked about, i drank through out the night and failed to feel anything, If i had only had 3 drinks all night I wouldnt have posted : P

I've never had ensure, always been curious about it, but never got the guts to try it because I'm scared of how densely packed the calories are in those things! I'm such a wimp :p

happy birthday! lol interesting question..

i'm not a big alcohol drinker, i just drink when i'm on vacation.

what i notice is, i do get drunk BUT, the alcohol doesn't stay in my system long... that is, i either pee a lot and falll asleep.... or the last time which was the worse, i vomited repeatedly and fell asleep.

i have never had a hangover either. so i suspect something in my body just causes me to metabolize alcohol very quickly. people were absolutely shocked that i didn't have a hangover at all after that vomiting incident... they said 'maybe it's because you puked it all out?' lol

well the crohns is in my small bowel and i still get drunk, not to often as ive kids and dont get much of a chance but i get to the stage of "if going home coz im blootered" whisky and lager do have that effect though...

That is very interesting about alcohol absorption in SI vs. stomach. Explains why I've had such problems with hard alcohol since being dx'd. Doesn't explain why I can tolerate red wine.

Gratz with ur Bday! Last time I had alcohol was in december, 1 beer, my stomage started hurting so bad, I dont dare to drink alcohol anymore....

^ funny i remember once i was starting to feel a bit of a flare up but drank the rest of my alcoholic beverage anyway and i swear it went away...so i think the alcohol some how stopped my flare up lol :)

I had some drinks over Easter, about 6 glasses of wine, which got me pretty good then 2 glasses of whiskey and coke then a shot of whiskey....i would have said three or four years ago i would have thrown up from that, but all I got was a bit tipsy. I don't drink often, so I wouldn't think I would have any tolerance built up as well...so you may have something on the non absorption.

It may be the tannins in the red wine...certain ones make me feel crappy, and like I have a hangover even after one glass.....

And, for the 'normal' person, it takes about 1 hour for the body/liver to metabolize 1 drink out of your system.....remember, even if you feel fine, you may still have a readable blood alcohol content (BAC).....

And as far as the OP,.....oh YES- I can get drunk! Try not to very often though - I don't handle hangovers very well any more!!! :ywow:
