WE’VE all been there — you go to reach for the toilet paper and it’s annoyingly around the wrong way.
The ‘Great Toilet Paper Debate’ is a popular discussion topic regarding the proper orientation of a toilet paper roll with respect to the bathroom wall, which can be either hung over or under the toilet roll holder.
It’s such a hot issue that it even has its own 5,000 word Wikipedia page, which explains the debate in great detail.
“Toilet paper when used with a toilet roll holder with a horizontal axle parallel to the floor has two possible orientations: the toilet paper may hang over (in front of) or under (behind) the roll. The choice is largely a matter of personal preference, dictated by habit,” it states.
“While many people consider this topic unimportant, some hold strong opinions on the matter. “Defenders of either position cite advantages ranging from aesthetics, hospitality, and cleanliness to paper conservation and the ease of detaching individual squares, it adds”
Roll-based toilet paper dispensing has been around since 1883 and, we’re presuming, so has the argument about whether it should hang over or under.
A recent debate on Lifehacker.com provided some interesting arguments.
“When the roll is backwards, the paper hangs down against the wall, probably 4 inches FURTHER away. To place that precious tissue any further away than necessary results in a possibly dangerous and definitely precarious lean, lifting the buttocks further off the seat and risking leakage or even tumbling to the floor...with even more serious leakage issues,” one user wrote.
“Under. This allows for more easily removing a given sheet or length of paper with a single hand, as you can pull upward and/or sideways against the roll. The “over” position does not allow for this, without a greater chance of pulling unneeded extra paper downward, another added.
Consistently, time and time again, studies show that the majority of people prefer to hang the toilet roll OVER.
So how should it really be?
