Two fistulas with setons

On Friday, I went in for outpatient surgery to drain an abscess that I have had for over a year that developed when I was pregnant. I have hx of ulcerative colitis since 2001, IPAA surgery and illeostomy reversal in 2002/2003. Have not had any real difficulty with my pouch other than some pouchitis intermittently. However, this abscess was NOT gong away and would get very angry at time. So, I agreed to surgery. During surgery on Friday, he found a double fistula which I now have a setons for. One a vaginal fistual that connects to my JPouch and the other fistula that connects to the vaginal fistula.

I was not really expecting for my C&R to find two! He said I got the blue light special! I had no idea! In fact, I don’t know what to expect at all. Can someone give me some insight about what to expect in the weeks to follow. How long will I need to take sitz baths for? Will I ever go back to being “Normal” down there? What about tampons or sex? or pregnacy?

Please help! Thoughts, suggestions, advice would be much appreciated. Kind of depressed about this new finding.

Hi there,
I had the same type of surprise in September. One recto-vaginal and one regular rectal. After things stop hurting from the incisions sex and tampons are not a problem. The setons in there will tug some but mine never hurt from sex. My recto -vag seton came out in December but the other is still in place. The surgeon wont comment on how long it will be there - its not healing well I guess.

I hope you heal up quickly.

Sitz baths... While it hurt I tried to do 3 a day. I find now that if I don't take one a day and/or sit on a heating pad the abscess fills back up. :/

Hi vanittany and a big warm welcome :) I hope you don't mind me deleting the other thread which had the same post in it so we can keep all the ideas for you in the one place. SailorLuna is one of many wonderful people here who will do their best to help you through this.

@big struck...Well, that is a question that I can ask when I go for my follow up...again. I had a total coloectomy in 2002 with a JPouch. First fistula (diagnosed) since then. I have a feeling that I could have actually had the first fistula for years!
