13c with total cloud cover...A good day for cycling as there wasn't too many people walking along the coast...not that I've got anything against people mind you.I just love the way they walk across my path while deep in conversation on their phones,or allow their dogs to wander hither and thither on their flexi leads....all on the clearly marked cycle path....it makes me all warm inside.
 
I looked at the weather report and went woah! -17C, feels like -24C. And of course I have my Stelara appointment this afternoon. It's bright and sunny though, and supposed to warm up by Saturday.
 
-22C this morning under brilliant cobalt blue skies. With people glued to their phones they are missing out on many of nature's wonders. I stood out by the outhouse with the warmth of the sun upon my back while taking in breaths of fresh cold air with only a warm house coat and slippers. It makes me want to put on the skis.
 
We have just had another heatwave warning. The whole of Australia is under the influence of a stagnant central Australian trough. The air is just sitting there getting hotter and hotter. Some parts of northern West Australia are expecting temps up to 47c and there are very few areas under 35c. It is very hard to stop bushfires starting with those temps a week at a time.Ron.
 
-20C another repeat of yesterday. The snowcover is thin for the time of year, but I will try skiing this afternoon. 47C that is boarder lining upon planetary temperature records, Keep safe Ron.
 
Sunny and a chill wind. Rain coming in for the weekend. I agree that people are changing through their constant use of technology when outside. They really are a different generation that probably don't notice nature or the sky even. The tips of my crocus, daffs and tulips are poking through. Probably to be damaged by frost soon enough. We shall see. I'm already yearning to see a bit of colour now Autumn has gone. Preferably not white though. I can do snow for a day but not much longer, lol.

Lovely and sunny today, however, the wind kept me away much of last night. I wasn't expecting wind with such strength. I had believed it was only up Carol's way.

Just wondering if i should allow the cats their festive treat, the xmas tree wreck.
 
talking about wind. I just listened to the latest NASA probe on mars. It recorded the martian wind. It really made me feel strange and privleged to actually be listening to a sound not made by man coming from another planet. They said it is the first time it has ever happened. To be alive to hear it made me feel really happy. Ron.
 
I listened to the winds of Mars too and marveled how sounds familiar here can be found on other worlds. I remember watching the first lunar landings, but I maybe too old to see the first foot steps taken by man on Mars.


I did go skiing yesterday afternoon enjoying the scenery that I have not seen since last winter, but we could use some more snow.
 
Another fine and windy day....6c Had a walk through the park and fed the ducks.They were really hungry and climbing over each other and quaking fit to bust.We assume, because it's a popular park,that the ducks would get a feed from the kids,but maybe they're too busy on their phones or e games.We felt really guilty when all the food was gone and they were still hungry...

It's been another mild day. Little rain. Some breezy windy gusts. Nothing to complain about. Got some tulip bulbs half price and have popped a few in today. The rest will await tomorrow and the next day. Then i will await. Give it until March and hopefully they will be blooming lovely.

My camper van, i have discovered, has a leaky windscreen, more outlay. Mind, it still has it loo inside. Not that i really go that far these days. Doesn't pay to get older. Unless of course, you're like Carol. God, i used to love a bicycle. But the pain in the right lower quadrant was amazing and could stop me from walking for a good few days. Damn that push on the right pedal, especially uphill. Loved the wind in my hair when going down hill though. I'm just jealous, Carol. Too hilly here for me to challenge a peddle.
 
-2 and very little snow on the ground. Last year most of the cedars in town died because there wasn't much snow on the ground when the deep freeze hit. I keep losing my strawberries even when I cover them with leaves.
What about an electric bike Spooky?
 
Just over a week ago a cyclone formed in the coral sea. After two days it was downgraded to a low. Last night it passed over Port Douglas in north Queensland with 100 kph winds and between 100 and 400 mm of rain. No one knew it was that powerful or even still around. Now it has crossed cape York and is expected to reform and intensify in the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is then expected to recross into central queensland as a cat 3 cyclone then turn into a rain bearing low and sweep down the length of the state. None of this was forecast till it happened. Not happy Ron.
 
5c and still sparkly bright.....D., we've been talking about getting a camper van the last few days.We had caravans (mobile homes) for over 30yrs.We'll probably talk ourselves out of it as we usually do,but hooking the bikes on the back and looking for new trails is appealing.But impulsive we're not...crohns saw to that hahaha
 
45f, or 7c for the majority of those posting weather temperature.
Cloudy, and chilly for me and my old bones.
 
-10C with a mix of sun and cloud, not much wind. I am going to fill the truck with all the recyclables I have been accumulating and take it down to the depot. Mainly cardboard, paper, and cans. I have no way to store those bulky plastic bottles, so I burn those and they produce a lot of heat from the wood furnace.
 
5c and sunny so far.We get our recyclables collected fortnightly Buff.That bin is always full while the non-recyclable is usually half empty.There's not nearly enough research into recycling and I think saving the planet is turning out to be too little too late.
 
When I look at all the waste that could be reused its no wonder the planet is in trouble. When I look at all the clear cuts it makes me want to recycle every piece of paper and cardboard I find. I wonder why it does not make more people think to do the same.
 
It appears we are moving to a perfect storm scenario. The cyclone has reformed in the gulf of Carpentaria . It is expected to intensify and move back across the cape as a cat 3 and track south down the Qld coast. At the same time a severe upper system low has developed in bass strait and is moving thru Victoria with strong winds and storms and heavy rain . It will move up the NSW coast and there is a strong possibility it will meet cyclone owen around SE Qld causing torrential rain by late on the weekend. Ron.
 
The sun is trying to come through which is an improvement on the dull/gloomy, but it's still a tad cold. No ice on vehicle so dentist it is.

The weather forecast is not encouraging Cyclone Owen is moving as expected as is the southern low. Present indications suggest that they will both arrive on the sunshine coast around Sunday or Monday. We have been told to expect rainfall of 250mm or more. I am not looking forward to all of that water coming in. Ron.
 
Doesn't sound good Ron. I wish i knew how to advise you with the bucket loads of water into your apartment. That's an awful lot of rain. Perhaps get the kayak indoors and sleep in that. Actually i'm sorry for you. I wish you had a safer place. You don't need the extra hassle with all your health problems. Is there nothing the landlord can do?

Stay safe though. Not sure knowing about the impending doom is good or bad. 4 days to come to terms with the flooded flat. Good luck though.
 
Cyclone Owen is expected to be Cat 4 by this evening. Our worst days will be sunday and Monday. Ron.
 
A brighter day today. Not got my heating on much at the moment which is good. Yay, the shortest day of the year in a week, then it's slowly uphill.

+2 and hardly any snow. I tried to make some Christmas ice candles and put them outside overnight. They're still completely liquid.
 
Another dark day. Yesterday I had all the lights on in the house it seemed like dusk all day. I didn't go any farther than the outhouse and spent the day inside installing shelving and organizing the basement, normally things that I would do on rainy days in summer. Winter does not want to get going this year.
 
Woke to heavy rain this morning from a deep trough running from the gulf down to the Qld border. The cyclone is moving a bit slower than expected but they say it will follow the trough line down to SE Qld. I am sitting at my computer surrounded by 5 buckets to catch the water running thru my ceiling. I am the downstairs flat and have no roof ,that is entirely on the upstairs flats. Who knows what will happen when it really starts to rain. Ron.
 
The power utility announced a planned power outage to service the lines. They always do this at breakfast time. I was prepared for it with the generator ready to go, so I had a hot breakfast and a warm house in short order. One pull on the rope and old Honda was up and running, I wish I could be as quick in the mornings.

Constant showers but not as heavy as expected. Really hot with very high humidity. Very oppressive. Ron.
 
-1C Mild and hazy, good weather for ice fishing but not so good for cross country skiing. Not enough snow to access the cabin; too little for the snowmobile and too much for the ATV its getting to be a long winter if this keeps up. Going to hole up today and bake a meatloaf this afternoon.
 
0C and very little snow. My ice candles outside are still refusing to freeze. The pretty pine cones for decorations sucked up water and closed. At least it's easy to walk outside, all the sidewalks are bare now.
 
Forecast for today is rain , 60-120mm. None thru the walls yet Di only thru the ceiling from a leaking roof upstairs. If we get the predicted amount of rain today The walls will certainly leak . Ron.
 
Sunnier here so far. Still a little chilly though. Mind, it's December. No snows like last year as yet.

Stay safe Ron. Will you be experiencing the CAT 4 there? I'd definitely be whinging to the landlord about leaks. Sounds like he only likes to collect rents.
 
The remains of the cyclone is gradually sliding down the east coast towards us. We had rain most of the day with the heaviest this evening. They are predicting rain all week and into Christmas day. I think I was very lucky to get thru today without bailing. I doubt if I will be that lucky for the rest of the week. The landlord has already told me they will not do any more maintenance on the units and if it is causing be so much trouble , LEAVE. Ron.
 
Well yesterdays forecast for snow and ice rain was a duffer.It was wet and windy so they were half right.Today is a fine 5c and rising to 10c by the end of the week....allegedly.
 
Yesterday was warm and windy and has been melting whatever snow we have left. It could be that this winter will be a dud. Today its sunny windy and already +2C. Only about 8 cms of snow left on the ground with open bare patches.
 
Mild and wet this morning. That's not so bad. Sounds like you have a sloppy, almost winter British day, Buff. Not that we often have 8cm of snow. I think we would be complaining of 2C though. It feels like double digits out there at the moment. Rain for tomorrow and lashings of it i think.
 
We are in for more rain and heat. Ipswich just west of Brisbane is expecting 41c on Friday and we are expecting mid 30 cs . It looks like it will be a wet Christmas this year. I am having Christmas to new year off for the first time in many years and I have told the boss I am going away for two weeks in Feb. I am going to a little place called Miara at the mouth of the Kolan river which Is 50 kliks north of Bundaberg. The camping ground is right on the river so I won't be loading and unloading the yak every day . It has wheels so it will just be a short stroll to the river. I will have to go carefully as they have fairly regular croc sightings but it is a bit busier than their usual territory so they are a bit more timid. And if they aren't I'm sure a little fear will turn me into an olympic kayaker. Ron.
 
That's good news Ron.It's good to have something to look forward to.It'll do you a power of good.…..7c here and sparkly bright.Good cycling weather.....I honestly don't know where I get the energy from.
 
-9C and there's snow in patches, most of it melted. This is how the perennial plants get killed off in my garden. Tomorrow is supposed to be +2. Very weird for this time of year.
 
Good to hear that you have plans for a vacation Ron. Your crock problem is similar to the bears we have to deal with.
More seasonal today, -10 C with sunshine, no snow for the long term forecast.
 
-5C the dry conditions continue. Since I cannot use the snowmobile I poured fuel stabilizer into the fuel tank and put it back into summer storage, might as well keep it out of the elements for now. I can get around with the ATV

It sure is strange here at the moment. This is very different weather than I'm used to.
 
Wet out, but no rain yet. Slightly brighter than yesterday also. Off to the dentist. The seasons certainly seem to be changing in their nature, especially with Ron getting rain, lol.
 
-3C sunshine, but dry. Its been a dry season, we get these once in awhile. The forecast calls for more seasonal conditions coming in the next few days perhaps the snows will follow.
 
We are getting showers or storms most days, temp well over 30c today. 37 for tomorrow with a severe storm predicted for the afternoon. I am well and truly over Christmas and it's not even here yet, Ron.
 
5c and clouding over after a fine start.....Ron join the club re: xmas I'm fed up of being told what to eat.drink,wear,cook,buy and even what bloody make-up to clag on my face and how to wear my hair......It must be soul destroying for those who are not well off or
who are alone.We choose not to have xmas.It's just another day with nuts.AND NO NEWSPAPERS !!! This time next week it will be over and the Easter Eggs will be in the shops.....
 
Could not agree more Carol. Just watched the late news. Large areas of NSW including Sydney got hammered by huge supercells this afternoon, Some of the hail was the size of oranges. The NSW state emergency service has hundreds of teams out trying to tarp up destroyed roofs. On the coverage there dozens of cars with dirty big holes thru their front and back screens. I can see a point coming where you will no longer be able to insure your house against storm and tempest. We will have to start building our homes like fortresses. We reached 34c today and expect 37 tomorrow with severe supercells. Heaven help those who have started Hols and are in tents. Ron.

I have to also agree, I don't observe christmas, for me its simply another day. I hate the rush, noise and over consumption of this holiday, and what I don't get is how it takes weeks for the holiday to build up, and one day later the whole thing is over and would appear hungover.

What we really need is some kind of a holiday or festival in January and February when nothing goes on for some strange reason. I enjoy winter there should be activities and events going on as it does through the summer.
 
Forecast for 37 C i Brisbane and around 33C on the coast where I live. On par with what we expect in Queensland, Australia this time of year. Further north , the interior of the State faces 40C plus!

Well, it's the shortest day of the year today. I celebrate this by cooking myself and the cats a chicken. Will probably do that on Xmas too lol.

It's dark and gloomy out so i shall be pleased it's the shortest day. Roll on Spring. Should start to see some snowdrops popping up. Last year my neighbour had snowdrops up on Christmas day. I have got some primulas out at the moment. Love a few flowers to brighten up our darkest months. It always makes me think that life is on its way back from the death of Autumn.
 
5c and last nights rain has departed.Hoping to get out on the bikes soon.There'll be lots of folk wandering about aimlessly over the weekend...Oh,deep joy !!!
Yes,as D., says the shortest day is here.Roughly it's 7hrs 34mins and 20secs today,and by Sunday it will have lenghtenend by 2mins...like I said,that's a rough guesstimate.
Our winter hasn't started yet.I wish it would just get here and get it over with...
 
The storms came but they missed the sunshine coast but hammered south Brisbane and the Gold coast. They estimate the storm in Sydney yesterday caused over 18 million dollars worth of damage. In the old days we had to wait watch and wonder if there was a storm coming. With todays technology you turn on your weather App and there is no doubt if you will cop it or not.Ron.
 
Yes Merv I am sure that the storms make a beeline for the heatsinks. All of those buildings and bitumen and hot air must have some effect in drawing the storms in , particularly the supercells or on the other hand it may just be dumb luck. I live up in Nambour and my window faces the mapleton range, we get some really good light shows at times , trouble is we also get a lot of the water that falls on the range, Cheers ron.
 
I am enjoying this time of year. Its a time out from the rush when I can rest. Spring with all the biting flies, and if its not rainy and cold then its the wild fires to deal with. Then there is all that firewood to be cut and piled and the grass will not wait to be cut. I look forward to the long evenings while we have them, in a few months its back on the grind.
 
Well, i've no reason to complain either. It's a lovely sunny day here and it's just a shame that the day is short. I do feel so much better with sunshine.

I'm ignoring the shops now. They were manic yesterday and i think the run up to the one day of the year when they're shut they will be jam packed with those that shop for a whole month and not just one day. Can't believe how people think they are feeding the 5,000.
 
I had to wade through the masses to get a few things and refills from the pharmacy. What bothers me most about this particular holiday is the huge build up that goes on weeks prior, for basically what is just one day before dropping dead like all those decorated trees dumped before newyears that took years to grow.
One would think that if it were a true holiday it would be a great festival that would last several weeks and give everybody a needed time out from the grind. I'd like to see it go on well into January with organized planned festivities, the world needs to de-stress and have a good defrag.


I forgot that this is the weather thread. Cloudy, -10C and expecting some more light snow. The ski trail is once again passable, maybe I will rant less.

We had a line of supercells come thru again last night . The Goldcoast copped it again as did the Gympie widebay area. The storms were triggered by a cooler southerly change hitting the trough that seems to be embedded on the dividing range. No storms forecast for today. Something happened last night that I have been dreading for some time. There has been a lot of activity within the Pacific ring of fire. Krakatoa erupted overnight causing a tsunami that killed 20 people in Indonesia. Last time it erupted was in the 1800's and the whole mountain disappeared in one big bang that killed over thirty thousand people. I sincerely hope this was not a practice for a bigger event. Ron.
 
Much the same here last evening,Rons Two storm celsl in rapid succession. I guess the temperature dropped 10 degrees in aa many minutes. Plenty of rain and gusts of wind across the southern Moreton Bay Islands, but no real damage . My generator wasn't required on this occasion!

Yep, Krakatoa looks ominous . Did you ever see the film East of Krakatoa? I think Brian O'keefe played the lead role. It was, I believe made in the late fifties, so some of the younger members may no have heard of it. It is ironic that such disasters occur atound this time of year-eg. the Boxing Day tsunami.

222 deaths so far re: Krakatoa.Merv was the film you're thinking about called Krakatoa East Of Java ? I remember it well.Something that sticks in my mind is reading somewhere that Krakatoa is actually west of Java…..but I've never checked that.

I don't think we truly know what is normal for the planet. We have been lead to believe that the conditions here are relatively benign, but I think we are beginning to know that this isn't the case as we start to witness the greater geological and meteorological cycles of the planet. We as humans are much smaller in the scale of things than we were lead to believe, our existence could be wiped out in a blink of an eye if mother nature wants to.


Today its -8C with flurries.
 
Buff, i have to agree that Xmas should last as long into January as possible. I do like Christmas admittedly. The lights around and about are lovely in the dark evenings and January and February are awful to get through.

Wet and really dreary, so a normal Xmas for us at least.

Sad about the tsunami. So many eruptions around the world lately. I think Hawaii is on the point of stopping finally, but who knows.
 
Hi Carol, I don't know why they called that movie Krakatoa east of Java when it was in the Sunda straits to the west of Java. It is no longer Krakatoa causing the problem It is probably still orbiting the planet or scattered over half the continents on earth. The locals call this volcano child of Krakatoa a little to the north of Krakatoa. The sunda strait has a bad history for Australians . during WW2 the Australian warship Perth accompanied by an American warship sailed into the strait one night only to run into a Japanese task force . Neither ship stood a chance but the Perth stayed afloat long enough to fire all of their ammunition. We had a good family friend ,Charlie Goodchap , Who was on the Perth when she went down. He spent the rest of the war in Changi prisoner of war camp.
Merv we again missed the storms , they missed us hitting Caloundra to the south and Gympie//wide bay to the north. The humidity has been pretty bad since. The temps are not that high they just feel like it with so much moisture in the atmosphere. Ron.
 
Yep Ron, it certainly is not east of Java! The film was made in 1968/69 and while largely panned by the critics did receive an Academy Award for best special effects. Apologies, the actor was Brian Keith along with Maximilian Schell et al!

Windy and and appreciably cooler , pleasant in fact. No sign of Santa and his marauding reindeers yet. They make a helluva row on the tin roof. Bah Humbug! Merv.
 
It's -6 and cloudy here. I hope you all have some decent weather too. That was an interesting bit of history, Ron. I hope the ring of fire settles down too...Ha Ha... for any jokesters... I meant the volcanoes. ;)
