What is YOUR weather like today??

Looking quite nice out. Well, not raining at least. The sky is trying to brighten up too. I have bought myself another bird feeding station for xmas. It's for my small birds and i hope the feeders will not allow the big birds (jackdaws and pigeons) to scoff all the food.

Merry Christmas Di. I think it is wonderful how you look after your little furred and feathered friends. I often hear people complain about us feeding wild animals. Well if they were still in the wilds they would probably have plenty of food ,but we seem to have taken the wilds from them. Merry Christmas everyone & please keep safe. Ron.

Happy Christmas, Ron. Dare i say it's lovely and sunny and the sun actually has some radiant heat. Both my neighbour and i commented on how Spring-like it is out there. I love it.

7c here with clear blue skies......Ron,I just saw on my laptop news headlines the Oz. is expecting record heat levels for Xmas alas.Happy Holiday to you and better health and contentment in 2019.May I expand that wish to all my fellow weather whingers and big hugs to you all.

Well Cmack, I think we will see flying pigs ( or Trumps) before we have any of the white stuff here! I'll let you into a teeny weeny secret , I was born and raised in the England and have seen all the snow ( including time spent in Berlin) that I ever want to see. I live in the subtropics which is my kind of climate.

I came to OZ 41 years ago. Had the Canadian authorities not decided to recognize our UK nursing qualifications , my plan was to migrate to BC!
Cheers,
Merv

PS It is 28 degrees, sunny and definitely not roast turkey/ plum pudding weather.

I can live with that Merv. Quite a few tiger prawns died to provide a nice simple Christmas dinner for me . Washed down with some sparkling non alcoholic grape juice. I can feel the heat starting to build. They are predicting a heatwave and bits or Tasmania are already burning, lets hope it does not get too bad. Ron. PS Buff and Cmack, I ceratainly would no mind swapping for a few days. Ron.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS, ALL.

Quite mild here, no rain. It is dull though. I could definitely enjoy some Aussie weather, or a couple of days of that Canadian white stuff.

7c and sparkly bright again with a skim of ice on the puddles.Been for a cycle and have washed hubby's lunch dishes.I wish I could muster an appetite after all the trouble I go to for his meals, but plenty left-overs for tomorrow.I won't be moving from this sofa until bed-time,except to get a helping of home made black forest trifle.....I would have enjoyed the prawns and juice Ron

No change from yesterday....still 7c and sunny.Going for a walk along the river and I expect everyone and their granny will be out too.The river isn't the meandering leafy sort.It was once a big ship building place, alas no more. And way back in time ships carried coal all over the place. Our once thriving fishing industry is now struggling too,but still enough boats to be interesting. And there are good views out to sea. Most of the old fish processing shops are now posh restaurants, but folk come from miles around for the fish and chips.Eat in or on the river side.I have to say I make better f & chips at home (hubby says) but that's a secret.Don't want queues down the street.

I make good fish at home too carol, shame about the chips. At least I know my fish is fresh. Yum , Ron.

Are you in Australia, Carol? Grey skies again. Damp out, no rain though. Horrible weather really. Sounds lovely up there in Tynemouth. I have bland fish too. Unfortunately Abbott laboratories have failed to deliver my liquid feed. It was due Xmas eve. Thank God i have some frozen fish and jacket potatoes in my freezer, lol.

-15C with brilliant sunshine. I enjoy fresh fish from the lakes around the area when I can catch some. Winter time ice fishing can provide some very good fish with the cold water. Occasionally I can get salmon from lake Superior from the First Nations people. Its not often, but its a treat when its available.

It's currently -8c here. I would like some salmon too...mmmm! I just love fresh caught homemade smoked salmon. Delicious! The biggest one I ever caught was a 23lb Chinook out near Parksville BC. I know they can get much bigger than that though.

There is so much spoken about the superiority of one fish over another. We are blessed with really nice salt and freshwater fish. I really don't care what the fish is as long as it is fresh I love it all. One of the best freshwater eating fish we have is the introduced English Redfin perch. I am glad that you can eat some fish Di. It really is pain that we can no longer enjoy many of the foods that we could eat when we were younger. I have given away all carbohydrates (except fruit) since October. It was playing merry hell with my gut and with my diabetes. I really miss a nice crusty breadroll bu I don't miss the 18 kg I have already lost since stopping carbs. We have had cloudy weather for the past week. It has kept things cooler but suspect that will change soon. Ron.

The country is heating up Carol, Marble Bar in northern WA hit 48c today. Victoria and Sa are in the grip of heatwaves. Strangely SEQld has been at normal temp range, I have no idea why but I like it. They think another cyclone may spin up off cape York later this weekend. Ron.

Another dull day. Grey skies, no wind, feels a tad damp in the air again and no small birds at my new bird feeding station. At least we don't have 48C and cyclones.

I used to enjoy carb free diets, but my liquid feed is mainly carbs.

Marble Bar , a small town in the north of West Australia hit a new high temp reading of 49.3c Today. That is hot. Ron.

We had a rather rare uncommon snowstorm that dropped close to 45 cms of snow in one day. I shoveled during the storm and will have to go and dig out again this afternoon. The last time we had a storm like this was back in 1996.

We are all set now with these snow levels, a generous gift from nature but it will take a while to work in the trails.

-17C and partly cloudy with a fresh wind from the northeast.

So around 18 inches of snow then, Buff? Amazing. Sounds like back breaking stuff to clear that amount of snow. Cosy by the fire though.

Ron, that is just a tad too hot.

Carol, why are you getting blue skies and sun? A little sun managed to shine through the clouds for a little while. Certainly not cold. Heating on only for a bit today.

A bit humid today and some showers possible tomorrow. The monsoon trough has well and truly developed over North Qld, They think that a cyclone may develop in the next couple of days. They don't know where tho. They are saying it could be in the Gulf or it could be in the northern coral sea. Wonderful predicting again. The bureau are not having much luck this cyclone season. at least we know it will be called Penny. Ron.

It took me two afternoons to dig out from all the new snow. I go slow and easy and make it my afternoon activity. I dug out the wood pile, the outhouse and the driveway. Took the snowmobile out to pack down the walkways. It has very good traction now with the brand new track, its like having a brand new snowmobile.

I thought it was warm out, but it was only -18C yesterday, the work out kept me warm.

Last night it went down to -25C I kept the wood furnace fed for the night by adding wood when I got up for water. Winter was late in getting going, but it would appear that it has become established.

11c again and after a fine sunny morning it's clouded over now.It rained during the night and the roads / pavements (sidewalks) have stayed damp and dirty all day....

Another dull gloomy day. I'm sat watching Australia's firework display for New Year. Happy New year Ron, and all other Antipodeans. 11 hours to go for us.

Happy new year from the future Di. Wishing everyone here a healthier new year. From Ron.PS All the best for the coming year Merv. Ron.

A quiet New Years here, I'll get out for some winter fresh air, enjoy a good dinner and go to bed after watching the fireworks coming out of Chicago on the TV.
-17C with a passing flurry.

Happy New Year all....I just wish I could be as enthusiastic as I was back in the day.
5c and blue sky and sunshine ...again.Having a quiet day in after a quiet night in.

well they named cyclone Penny in the early hours of the morning. Then it crossed the cape and was downgraded to a tropical low. It may or may not reform in the Coral sea. a lot of maybe ,ifs and perhaps with the cyclone scene this season. Ron.

C, sunny again?????????? What's going on. I seem to be in a different country. Dull and gloomy and now with drizzle. Getting impatient for Summer. Neighbour has a few snowdrops out, i have a daff head showing up through it's leaves and tulips are poking through. Strangely, all my fushias that don't flower until November have started to get green leaf shoots all over. I still have 7 apples on my tree. What's going on. Anyone would think we've got that northern sunshine.

Happy New Year all. Hope it's the best year yet for your health and happiness.

A quiet cold new years day, -28C under blue cobalt skies. I had to get up and feed the wood furnace during the night. We'll see what this new year will bring, 2018 was rough, but it could have been worse.

Penny crossed the cape and wandered out into the coral sea where it has become a cat1 cyclone again. It is now expected to intensify further and turn around in its tracks and hit the coast between Townsville and Mackay. I guess we will wait and see what it really does, Ron.

Grey skies again. It's much colder too. Not Buff's cold weather. -28 is really something, not that i've experienced that, but it's colder than being sat in my freezer (which i don't actually do). Expecting the next Beast from the East soon apparently. I sincerely hope not. Mind, it's probably Summer weather for Buff and Cmack.

Stay out the cyclone, Ron.

By the way, Easter is on it's way as there are chocolate eggs on the shelves in supermarkets, sigh.

-28 with this dry cold is not that difficult. Yesterday I had to stand outside my outhouse to marvel nature in these conditions. Cold dry air, no wind with bright warm sunshine warming one side of my body, while caffeine like cold waking me up on my other side. We only get these conditions at this time of year.

Overcast, a little 20 minute much need shower around 4m ish. Cyclone Penny, like most of these event is drifting out into the Coral Sea. It is always possible that she may be contrary and return to land, but that is in the lap of the god's. hoping she doesn;t turn out to be the proverbial 'Bad Penny"!

Cyclones usually tend to occur in the northern parts of Queensland but, have on the odd occasion headed south to affect the Brisbane area.

Ron is correct about the Easter eggs, even hot cross buns are appearing in the supermarkets! Anything for a quick buck.

3c but no wind so easily bearable.I don't even have the heating on.

Di., Animals after dark ch.5 last night.A mixture of UK wildlife + zoo critters. An interesting bit + on hedgies.Hope you saw it....first part of three.

Gray, -8C with some light snow. The snow is deep after that last snow storm and managed to shovel the snow off of the remote cabin roof. Packing trails with the snowmobile has been difficult, the neighbor and I were exhausted by the afternoon effort. I shouldn't be lifting stuck snowmobiles with a colostomy, but it has to be done.

The cyclone is still wandering around the coral sea , they are now predicting it will turn around tomorrow and head for Townsville at cat1. Again we will have to wait and see.
Take care Buff , the one thing I have found is that in our condition injuries can take a very long time to heal , best wishes Ron.

Totally frosted up this morning. Lots of extra birds looking for food. Don't think they can peck up worms with the ground frost.

Heating on yesterday and today.

Having endured British and European Winters, I admire you dudes ! Do you want to do a deal on cyclones versus significant injuries to to 'brass monkeys' , then Ron and I are open to negations if you want to trade! Don't fancy your heating bills, and sure as hell you would not welcome my/ours A/C bills!
Cheers,
M

Sort of the same here Cmack. We may or we may not get a cyclone. On alternate days they try to scare the crap out of you with dire cyclone warnings next day it's no big deal and we may not get it. I'm happy with the lets not get it. I have been thru enough to know it is not a pleasant experience. I'm going fishing for a couple of weeks on the 1st of Feb so I don't want any big blows of floods. Ron

No way jose,Our son and his family live in Aus.and we planned to emigrate out there, but after a couple of long hols decided it wasn't for us.Our son would come back to the UK tomorrow but his kids are at that awkward age and are true blue Aussies having been born there.

6c and grey here today

-3C cloudy. Yesterday was a day of rest after the trail effort as I have been pushing my body beyond its design limit lately. Merv; I'll take a pass on your climate, our summers while intense with its wildfires and biting insects are thankfully short. -35C is easier to take than +35C as long as one has enough firewood on hand that is, which is why I am intent on getting on with the firewood effort each spring. Winter cold is a good motivator to make sure there is enough firewood for the next winter, otherwise heating fuel bills become too much to manage.

We are having a chinook at the moment at 6c. This was much more common of the winter weather many years ago while growing up. Do we ever grow up? Pretty sure I didn't yet. ;)

31C, sultry and intermittently cloudy. Not a day for trimming hedges, but someone has to do it when my wife is on strike glued to her computer! Ex , well almost , cyclone Penny is heading east toward the N Queensland coast. According to the pundits it may peter out to a tropical low with high winds and plenty of rain. On the other hand it could regenerate as it get further toward the land early next week. I have limited faith in Met Office forecasts, bit like believing in fairies dwelling in the garden or thinking that Trump doesn't tell lies!

Take it easy, Buff, don,t do yourself a mischief, Mate.

Dull and grey again. Not so cold either. The news is reporting that plants are blooming really early this year. I have to agree, i still have apples on the tree, my clematis is coming into leaf as are my fushias. I have had primroses flowering for months and my nemesia hasn't died and now has loads of buds. This is the sort of winter i can get myself through, just wish the days were longer.

On the news - Melbourne 42C, then 2 hours later just 21C. Amazing, but i bet they were pleased.

That is not at all unusual for southern and western Australia, Spook. In Tasmania, way back in the late seventies I recall a similar event. Sydney also prayed for a 'southerly buster' after extreme heat , like Perth with the 'Fremantle Doctor'.
Cheers,
Merv

4c and grey again,no complaints from me....not about the weather anyway.....

Merv we have fairies at the bottom of our gardens in the UK,don't we D., ?

Cool, give me your address for when I come over on holiday lol.

Cold but dry. It's not been a particularly cold time so far. At this rate i will actually be enjoying Winter. I've probably spoken too soon, but hey, it's nice to have a mild phase at this time of year.

9c and no wind.Lots of sun this morning so had a walk through the park to the weekend craft market.Far too many people and all a foot taller than me,which isn't hard but so annoying.

I had nothing nice to say about our current climate until now. The weather has been mild for several days and now we are looking at another stretch into the -20's... with snow as well somehow? It should be interesting, there's not much snow as of yet in the valley bottom. Up higher it snows every day... well five days out of seven ain't too bad. I actually really love the cold, I can work so much more efficiently and can go skiing as well in the higher elevations. It's a good deal to me!

Dull and cold today. I really could do with some sunshine. One week of January already gone. Counting down the days until it's lighter, brighter and slightly warmer. I just don't love Jan and Feb.

11c but grey drizzly and windy...Really our winter hasn't shown up yet. There's been some snow on the high tops especially Ben Nevis,Scotlands highest peak.2-3 people have died so far this winter due to falls. It's so sad that young fit people with an appetite for the outdoors should die doing what they love.

I spent the last few days digging out, I borrowed my roof rake from the remote cabin (after digging out that place) to use at home to remove the snow from my sheds before they collapse from the load.
Hard on my body as I have to use my stomach muscles working the pole. Now we had another dump of snow ahead of a polar cold front. More digging out, hard to say how much because of it drifting and blowing, maybe another 20 cms to dig.

4c with clear blue sky and sunshine.....Ron,I heard news about the jellyfish invasion
around the Q/Land coast, due to the recent winds ? apparently thousands of people have been stung in shallow water or by accidently treading on those that were washed up on the beach.

Yes Carol in is not particularly safe to swim on the sunshine coast at the moment. The common bluebottles are causing a lot of stings. Fortunately a really hot shower can resolve the pain but a much bigger giant bluebottle has been turning up with the the standard bluebottles . Scientists claim that they are quite rare and it can be ten to thirty years between visits, virtually nothing is known about them except they have the potential to put the victims in hospital. Another stinger usually found in north Qld and a miniature version of the box jelly fish, the Irukandgi has made a surprise visit to the beaches and smooth waters inside Fraser Island. Several victims have been air evacuated to various hospitals from Fraser. they have the potential to kill despite only being the size of a ten cent piece. In real time ex cyclone Penny is hitting the coast near Mackay with gale force winds and torrential rain. Not a lot of fun. It is very hot and humid down on the Sunshine coast and we are getting some showers being drawn from offshore into the long tail of the northern low. Ron.

Sunny again, and it's quite mild too. Pleasing winter weather. Almost one third through January, whoopeee. Still awaiting the beast from the east again.

-17C Quite typical winter weather, with sun and cloud with a passing flurry. I have finished digging out from the last snowfall and need a rest, I may go for a short ski later. The heat feels good, I put in one log too many but it sure feels good on my bones.

Buff, i really love your reports from the 'wilderness'. I've been watching Joe Robinet on youtube doing his camping in the wilderness. I'm so jealous. If only i was young and healthy. Mind, you do make it sound lovely. Keep warm and don't exert yourself. If i exert myself i send everything straight through and do nothing but trot to the loo, lol.

fairly low cloud cover. Anticipated 29C. Maybe a coastal shower later. Much of the activity rain and flood wise is way up north, That concludes today's wetrep. The sitrep is even more boring!
Merv

-25C calm with partly cloudy skies. The snow squeaks underfoot when walking in this kind of cold. I plug in the block heater for the truck for a couple of hours for it to start. Not doing so is hard on the engine because the engine oil doesn't flow well, and one also wastes a lot of gas on such cold starts.
My body is similar, but once one is outside for awhile, dressed properly these conditions are very comfortable especially the dry cold without the wind. The peace and quiet in the forest is very relaxing, if my body were up to it, I would go much farther on the skis.

The wood fire runs constantly, and I don't remember the last time the oil furnace came on. So far this season I have gone through just over 3 bush cords of firewood.

Hot humid, hot breeze out of the north. Buckets of rain up north with the ex cyclonic low. Just cloudy here with not much rain. Ron.

I know what you mean Merv. I don't have aircon but if I did I probably couldn't afford to run it. I was working on the ute yesterday, cleaning everything out of the canopy and packing stuff for my trip in Feb. By the end of the day I was totally trashed. In times gone by I would pack the day before my trip. Now I need a bit of a run up. Ron.

I think that we are in the same boat,Ron-rapidly sinking! Still with three score years and ten (14 for cash) on the clock we ain't what were were once.By virtue of packing up smoking I can more readily afford the A/C bill!
Merv

Mild, damp and dull. Not going out anywhere fast even though we don't have Europe's nasty snowfall. Apparently we might get some later this month, but the weather men can never really get it right. They predict Indian Summer's and more lengthy snow storms which to be honest never really happen. I think weather men the world over are all a waste of money.

8c and grey skies with a chilly wind...I feel embarrassed saying "chilly" when compared to Canada and USA.Like Di., says, they're predicting a few mild days followed by snow at the end of the week...I better get the chains on the bike tyres.

Don't be embarrassed Carol, I find the damp cold when the temperature is just above the freezing mark to feel far worse than -20 with the dry cold.

While its still months away, I could not live without air conditioning; my body cannot take the heat and humidity for any length of time without making me sick.

-20C calm conditions, a good day to venture out into the bush for a bit.

It's -1c and the furnace is cutting up... Again! It's either a bad relay or a bad connection in the thermostat. It's supposed to get cold... I better get to work. I hope I can solve the problem quickly.

9c+ sunny with a blustery wind.Europe's getting the hammer, with 10ft snow in Turkey and 6ft in Germany and Switzerland. Many averlanches and some loss of life.Europe is a favourite ski-ing destination but the present situation is sending tourists home sharpish.

-10C Gray. Was out at the cabin doing work and the lake is one big slush hole. Not going to go near it with the snowmobile until the slush freezes up and stabilizes. It will do that once we get a cold spell as expected later in the week. For now have to take the long detour to get there as part of the main trail is still not packed. The snow will have to settle more to firm up before it will be able to take any kind of weight.

Low cloud and quite breezy. Mild again though. I think -10 would be a cold spell for us here in the UK. I agree that dry cold that smarts the skin is far better than the damp and less cold conditions which tend to wreck my joints badly.

They are forecasting an Australia wide heatwave that may last a week or more. A lot of Australia will be experiencing temps in the high 30's and quite a few areas reaching into the mid 40's. Not nice. Ron.

It's -7 and the furnace is up and running. It was a bad relay as expected and I had the right one (3 actually) that I salvaged from an old oven we had years ago. Which one goes next is anyone's guess. I have so many electrical components, the hard part is figuring out which box they are in...;) The old Sherman tank of a thing is almost 40 years old, I'm actually glad it's old because it's made to last. A couple years ago I rebuilt the blower motor assembly and put new bearings in and a new shaft as the old one was badly scored due to dry self lube bearings. It sure made a difference...good thing I was in the trades or we would have a huge bill. I may be disabled but I'm handi-capable at least...;)

No change. The fish are jumping , the cotton is wilting and, mosquitoes are a biting. 30C for the next few days and little of no rain in sight. Mowing the front yard can wait. Central beer time approaches!

Occasional sunshine, but other than that it's rather cloudy. Again it's mild so nothing to complain about really. The wind blew my bird station over last night but the winds have subsided this morning.

That's the same thing that happened to me a few days ago, D. Seed was everywhere so I had to watch out for cats trying to be mean to my birdies. Everything is eaten up now and the feeder has been put back upright. The birds are really happy about that! It's -7C with cloud cover at the moment.
