You might want to update your furnace Chris, oil and gas furnaces of that age tend to rob fuel, when compared to the new technology. Having worked as a stationary engineer operating both steam and hot water heating boilers I can honestly say that the fuel is far more expensive than the furnace. Over time the fuel costs really adds up. Typically fuel savings will pay back the price of a new furnace in 5 years or less.

I was forced to retire early from my job by this lousy disease, I loved the place and paid visits after I left. The job didn't feel like work unless something bad was happening; I may say I did not like being called in at 2Am for the dreaded no heat calls. I gave a lot of information out to the new guy who took over saving him a lot of trouble of finding out where all the piping goes through that place.

It's -8c currently with light snow. That was nice of you to help out the new guy, Buff. Our unit is wood/coal/electric, and yes it does need to be replaced sometime real soon. I'm just happy that it's keeping me warm right now. ;)

My dad ran a boiler....it's hard leaving a job huh. It is cold here right now but I have a trip to California in Feb so yea.

we have a heater, it is called Australia. Temps have been in the 40's in many places around the country and not expected to ease for some time. We have been lucky so far thanks to the SE trade winds . We remain in the low 30's every day but humidity is rarely below 50%. No sign of any change coming thru for the foreseeable future, Ron.

Very low clouds, intermittent rain and cold. This morning i could hardly move, the bloody arthritis is now kicking up fuss big time. Roll on Summer. I need a heater called Australia too, Ron. You made me laugh with that. Mind, we still don't have the cold like Europe or Cmack and Buff.

Well, that leaves us with a place that is the freezer; last evening temperatures dropped 10 degrees in an hour and my house walls started popping as a result. This morning it was -27C. Wood furnace runs steady, the hard work of cutting and piling wood pays off. Its expected to stay cold over the next several days.

This afternoon I will put on the skis and start packing the stretch of trail that has not been passable due to the depth of the snow.

Woke up to snow falling and although the temp.is just 1c it is melting now.Blue sky and sunny for now but parts of the country may get -10c tonight.

Light dusting of snow this morning almost melted now though. Not too cold either. Was a tad surprised at the snow as was supposed to be up in Scotland.

Its the deep freeze here, it was a mild night dropping only to -23C compared to what is yet to come starting tonight as the weather folks are calling for -30s without the wind.
Good skiing weather, but yesterday my knee gave me grief, there was no way that I could pack the snowmobile trails up hill, too deep for the snowmobile and my skis too. I changed plans and skied the main ski trail which is much flatter, enjoyed the warm sun on my back and the clear cold fresh air.

Same ,same here , there is a high anchored just off shore to the south of us. It has not moved for two weeks so every day is groundhog day. It is not expected to move for several days so we are stuck on 30c + or - a couple of degrees and high humidity. Ron.

We have a hazy sunshine today, and hazy is better than none in my opinion. Still a tiny bit of snow about. My pond had a thin sheet of ice on. I expect those plants that are poking their heads out the ground will be frozen off. We certainly have no Beast from the East 2 at the moment.

up to 4c during the day but dropping fast towards sunset.Still a thin covering of snow and ice in the shade, but a bright and sunny day otherwise.

-31C and the house walls were banging during the night from the dropping temperatures. Nice day, crisp, no wind with bright warm sunshine, I will ski the easy level section of the trail today, knee is still somewhat soar, will have to use the knee brace. How does one stay caged up inside on such a bright day and remain happy? Sorry knee, but you will have to be patient with me.

As much as i like cool weather, snow and I really don't get on too well. Anytime i get near it and that has only been a few times, it tries to hurt me. For me a nice cool day is around 15c. Ron.

-32C blue skies and brilliant sunshine. I like winter, the cold snaps are my favorite when I can go skiing, then come home to a warm house. I prepare well before hand for winter. The wood furnace can handle any kind of cold, so I never have to put on sweaters in the house or deal with cold drafts unless the fire has gone out. I also have better remission during the winter when allergies are fewer. I like summer too, but at times the weather leaves a lot to be desired in this area.

Stinking hot , its 8.30 at night and still and still 30 c . Some of the towns in western Qld have not been under 45c for two weeks. There is a cool front passing through Tasmania and Victoria. It will be very short lived and will not get up this far. Humidity has been in the 50% range for a couple of weeks. Starting to go mouldy , Ron.

3c,cloudless sky and plenty low winter sun.....Scott and his family are always suffering from one illness or another (42c there) whereas I haven't had flu or a sniffle since the millennium 18yrs ago.So I do believe that cold weather is healthy weather.I do like to snuggle down in the evenings though.

-35C and the trip to the outhouse was quick, at these temperatures the air feels like an icy liquid since I am only in a housecoat. Since I have a colostomy and need not sit and wait, I don't spend much time in there. I'm in and out n done, while other people who use outhouses install heat lights to take the edge off.

We had ideal viewing for the lunar eclipse; conditions under clear skies and very cold -27C conditions making for very clear view of the sky. I stepped out earlier and the moon looked like a cookie with a bite taken out of it while the moon was still bright enough to light up the night time landscape.

Later in totality the moon appeared brown, no moon light making for a dark sky ideal for star viewing. After midnight the moon returned gradually and the night became bright once again bathed by moon light.
It was a good one, and they say we will not see one for sometime, I hope it was not my last one, one never knows with everything going on with one's health.

The Wolf Moon was supposed to be visible between 4-4-30am but as the sky was cloudy we didn't bother putting the alarm on.Next one's in ten years so I might need help getting out of bed and to the window before the eclipse is over..

We continue with groundhog day. The high off the NSW coast has not shifted. Stil daily temps of 30c , humidity is getting worse , it was just over 60% early afternoon yesterday.
Another anniversary for me today, end year 21 of survival post stage 3 c colon cancer . start year 22 . Not bad considering I was only given 3 years max to live in 1998. Ron.

Sorry, cant post what i wanted to as my words and cursur are so changed as i write. i so love to communicate with you. but... why does my cursor change when i write. i love communication with you all.

That's got to be some sort of record Ron.Someone's looking out for you, that's for sure.

3c and another bright sparkley day.A good day for a cycle,There were lots of people out walking too..sigh !!!.But good on them for getting out in the fresh air.The car park on the river was as full as it is on a summers day.It was like the Wacky Races...

-12 with snow fall. For many of us life has been about survival. This year it will be 18 years of living with a colostomy after coming close to death from infection prior and after the surgery and the summer living/dying in the hospital. In the end after much coaching including the thumper my body chose life

Well, lovely and sunny this morning, rain in the afternoon and following on from that one dirty great snow shower. The size of the flakes was amazing. Fortunately it hasn't settled due to the wet ground.

Well the cool front did not help Tasmania much. There are bushfires everywhere. The monsoon trough has re-developed across the north of Qld and already one of the lows is spinning up into a spiral indicative of a new cyclone. Another in the , if,perhaps and maybe class of 2019. Ron. Thanks Carol it would seem that my survival genes are still slightly ahead of my cancer causing genes. Ron.

I think the weather is setting records again all over the world. Hard frost here, but the sun is out and lovely blue sky. Basically it's cheerful weather.

Over 50 fires burning in Tasmania this afternoon. A lot of the areas have peat so they are going to be hard to extinguish. Still at the maybe //perhaps game for a cyclone to develop off the cape by Friday. One also expected to form off WA, Ron.

Hard frost and -2 early on....+2c now with cloudless blue sky.One side of the road is basking in warm sunshine and the other side is still covered in frost/ice.

Some areas of South Australia had record heat yesterday with temps up to 47 in places. In one area they found a group of a dozen brumbies (wild horses) dead from dehydration. Tasmania continues to burn and the heat will ramp up in Victoria today. In both SA and VIC there is a possibility the power grid may fail due to overload. A cyclone formed off the WA coast and we are still waiting to see what happens up north on the cape with a deepening low.We are expecting around 33c here today. Ron.

Really overcast today and some slight drizzle. Days are getting lighter. I can't wait for the snowdrops to start coming up in the lanes so i've ordered 200 which should be ready to bloom. Talk about desperate for Spring.

Here the opposite is happening as we are once again entering the deep freeze. It is expected to drop into the -30's tonight and for the next several days. I don't plan on going anywhere but stay home and go skiing through the forest.

They are very worried down south carol. They have stated that if any fires start in those temps , they will be almost impossible to put out . I have noticed a general trend in the population with this latest lot of heatwaves. People are really on edge , they no longer believe that things will return to normal, I know I don't. Ron.

I can understand that Ron.We can't do anything about what nature throws at us and fire has to be the worst. It's total distruction.Let's hope the present situation improves...:ghug:

12c here and another really nice day.Weekend looks a bit iffy but it will be nothing to worry about....Saw first snowdrops while out for a peddle,so we can start counting down to Spring....

P.S Happy Australia Day Ron & Merv (Saturday) And a mention for Capt.Matthew Flinders whose last resting place was discovered behind Euston Station in London recently.

-32C brilliant sunshine under blue cobalt skies. Its winter, I will go skiing this afternoon, too cold for anything else. The deep freeze will continue for the next few days. Its been very quiet, as it usually is at this time of year.

Hot and humid here. The cyclone formed off WA but the one off cape York just became a rain depression. Towns like Cairns are averaging 250mm of rain a day. The east coast high is still blocking our weather patterns and we remain 30c with 50-60% humidity. Ron.

4c and blowing a hooley with gusts up to 65mph,making it feel colder.
Heavy showers making indoors the best place to be today.

PS.I read about the demonstrations to stop future Australia days, so perhaps wishing you Aussies a "Happy" day wasn't a good thing ?

Blowing strongly down here, bird table over and watching the felting on the shed lift on one side. Will have a task to put it back up soon. Not freezing cold out. Went to opticians and there are some nice clumps of snowdrops in the verges now. Will be seeing a lot more soon.

Still pouring up north. Daintree copped 400mm yesterday and the flood peak for the river is the highest recorded in 115 years. Tassie is still burning and WA is on fire alert in several areas. Still hot and humid here with the offshore high refusing to budge. Ron. PS I don't think that there will be too many changes to Aust day .

PS.I read about the demonstrations to stop future Australia days, so perhaps wishing you Aussies a "Happy" day wasn't a good thing ?

Hi Carol,
The vast majority of Australians are not in favour of changing the date of A Day.
The unwashed rabble unemployable quasi-intellectuals that held the demonstrations represent a minority view that can't differentiate between James Cook's journey up the east coast in 1770 and the arrival of Arthur Phillip's First Fleet 18 years later!

Attempting to rewrite history for the sake of political correctness is a pointless exercise. Whatever the date it will be an excuse for a booze up and a BBQ1!
Cheers,
Merv

Thank you, for your kind thoughts.

Thanks for clearing that up Merv. We don't get too much Aussie news over here unless it's a shark / croc.attack and darling son knows more about our weather than he does about over there.

4c clear blue skies and low winter sun, which I have to say is getting on my wick now.

-35C last night. Clear skies and thankful for the sunshine pouring into the house, the heat of the sun allows the fire to die down during the day. When it is this cold I go through a lot of firewood, I went through half a bush cord in the last couple of weeks. Having said that the oil furnace has not run. I would not want to have to pay for the amount of oil it would take to heat the place during these cold spells.

2c and wet.I think the South's getting snow / sleet and warnings of disruption to transport is being threatened,so that folk won't blame the go slows, overcrowding (trains) and road works. Also the government gets a break from the Brexit b*lls up when the population's worrying about the weather.

So far no problems here. No frost, no rain, no snow, not even very cold. They got it wrong again, lol. I suppose it could happen. Of course i'd prefer to be in Australia, but maybe not.

-25C partly cloudy,

I don't mind retirement at all when I remember getting up for work in the dark wondering if the truck would start in these cold conditions, despite having the block heater plugged in, and then coming home to a cold house and having to start the fire. I had propane for back up heat, but the thermostat was set low as I had a lot of bills to pay back then.

Ageing? i have another window open on my puter, it's for facelifts in Europe, lol. I'm serious though. This crohn's (with all the years of steroids) has thinned the bones, the skin, and i don't absorb minerals and vitamins well, can't eat a healthy diet and look much older than my age (unfortunately, it's other people who tell me). So, i'm thinking of the rejuvenation jolly in Europe.

The snow has arrived. Not the sort Buff gets, but a thin layer. Don't think it will last. Mind, i have been known to be wrong about things in the past.

Hot and humid. We normally get around 150mm of rain in January. This year we have had .4 of a mm for the entire month. It is still pouring in the north with a very active monsoon trough. I head off fishing on Friday morning. Ageing is the one thing in life that I can't be bothered worrying about. As long as I am 35 in my mind I'm ok. my friends think I'm a bit daft going fishing alone in my kayak in a remote area. I tell them it's no problem , I have my Epirb on board and if anything goes wrong I just press the button and they can come and collect the body, Ron.

Thank God for humour Ron, i'm grateful. No matter how old or ill i am, i still love when someone makes me laugh. Thanks for the laugh, Ron. You're always good for that. And humour, in my need for human traits, rates highly. I love that humour. I always knew life requirements. First is happiness/humour, second is health, third comes enough money to survive.

Enjoy that holiday. You work too hard Ron, I hope the 'play' is helpful to your mind, body, spirit and soul, i hope you don't pop your clogs in that kayak, Ron. Sorry about the changing weather. Prob the pole shift.

Yes Ron,enjoy yourself, power up your batteries and come back safe.

apparently the rest of the country ground to a halt this morning due to snow.
Here in the North East it's 2c with clear blue skies and sunshine and dry streets....we are now to be known as the Costa Del Geordies. Haway the sun !!!

-30C sunny, but a cold wind

Humor is the vehicle that has brought me through the darkest rough patches of life. Without humor I would be sunk. Having said that I hope you enjoy the trip out in the kayak Ron. I enjoy doing the same in the canoe, but for now my cross country skis get me out into the wilderness despite the deep freeze. We all need a release from time to time.

Well, the snow came and now it's gone. Supposed to be getting more tonight i think and for the next few days too. Street lights are going on around 5pm now which is an improvement.

Hot and humid here but still no rain in our area. This is one of our wet months and less than two mm of rain have fallen all month. Tasmania is still burning. Melbourne copped a huge storm last night which stared more fires than it put out. Sydney is heading for 41c today and up north the monsoon is still dumping incredible amounts of rain, another 200mm + yesterday. Ron.

Our official rainfall for the month is .4mm. It is getting worse up north. It is still pouring. Tassie is still in big trouble with fires . Heat and now a southerly buster thru Sydney tonight. Fires in WA . Im all packed up and heading off at 5 in the morning. It is about a four hour drive. See you all in a couple of weeks, take care all. Ron.

at the risk of repeating myself.....3c blue skies and lots of sunshine.A hard frost still around in the shade but dry where the sun's settled.

-35C under clear brilliant blue skies. This has been a cold snap that we have not seen in a few years, and one of the reasons I always cut more wood than I will need. Cold spells are good for the health of the boreal forest to kill off insects that damage trees that fuel bush fires.

I've been watching the news about the wild fires in Australia, as it could easily happen here if we get into dry spells during spring and summer. I don't like having to get up to feed the fire during the night, but after having had to do this for a lifetime its part of the routine that comes with cold weather.

Yep Buff,
The fires, particularly in Tasmania, our island State have been extensive. I lived in the seventies and recall the locals telling tales of 1972 ( I think) firestorm that engulfed the south of the Apple Isle. Mass destruction of livestock, native fauna and human casualties occurred.

With the exception of a few alpine areas in NSW, VIC and TAS we don't get really cold weather, in fact, many people have never seen snow!

Still warm here, about 30C, with no real change on the horizon. By now Ron 50 will be on the road for his holiday. Perhaps it would be wise for him to resist the temptation to head north in view of extensive flooding.

Being of mature years I don't think I could contend with a Canadian winter anymore. Growing up in northern England and memories of Army exercises in northern Norway was quite enough for this jungle bunny!

The snow has arrived. Not deep at all though. I have a lot more birds coming in to feed in the garden. I love it when they stop by for the easy feeding. Lots of blackbirds, starlings and the usual robins and sparrows. I have the wood pigeon and doves too, along with the raucous jackdaws.

Much the same here. Looks like the north of Queensland is facing further deluges, poor devils. We had a sprinkle of rain here which may be the start of a few more brief showers forecast for the next week. Temps will still be in the 30s.

1c and a heavy frost earlier.Just been caught in a short, sharp, sleet shower but the suns out now.Still chaos in parts of the country.

-17C Cloudy, these temperatures feel balmy in comparison to the the deep freeze earlier in the week. Easier nights without having to feed the fire multiple times. It maybe a short break as they are calling for a potentially strong winter storm ahead of the next cold outbreak.
I'm getting a bit old to keep up with the weather, constantly doing physical work shoveling and handling the wood furnace. Having said that the work might be the thing that keeps me healthy, as I am afraid I may quickly weaken from a sedentary lifestyle that comes with senior's apartment living.

I think you're probably right Buff.Use it or lose it ,as they say. What you have to ask yourself is,what would you do if you were somewhere easier ? Your life is very tough in winter, but it is your life.Easy for me to say of course.I would love your way of life, but couldn't do it now.....
1c and the slush has turned "crispy".Cars are creeping along. No more snow and a rise in temps forecast for the beginning of the week.Maybe 7c.

Lovely and sunny and only a tad of snow here and there now. So pleased January has gone now. February is a shorter month that i prefer. Primroses and snowdrops look lovely. Now awaiting crocus and daffs.

Carol I have rolled through the thoughts of moving many times, but everytime the answer comes up as to stay put for now. I think I would become very bored with apartment living after awhile. I am not yet ready for the confines of an urban lifestyle yet. Financially its also going to be a problem should I live longer. The prudent thing for me is to keep on going for now.

3c and dull this morning, now raining. The streets are cleared of ice but more snow forecast for the 14th and onwards.
Di., did you see the wildlife hospital on Countryfile on Sunday ?

Oh, i missed it! Never mind, perhaps it's on during the week as a repeat.
Wet windy night, but sun trying to break through the mist.

Hope Ron50 is safe. Lots of fires and flooding out there. Mind, he does deserve a good break. Let's hope it isn't stressful for him.

Short hol. Rained everyday and blew 20 knots non stop all day and night . In four days I put in 32 hrs of non stop paddling. I've lost another 5 kilos in a week. I forgot my gloves on Saturday now the backs of my hands are covered in blisters. I will try to do some short trips. IFICAN I fell off my camping neighbours trailer today trying to help him load it . He is 84 and his wife who has muscular dystrophy fell out of her wheel chair yesterday and shattered her leg . It had already been broken once and she bent the metal brace in her leg, being operated on today. The poor old guy though I was dead. My shorts slipped down around my ankles and I fell flat on my back from 4 foot up. Such is life. I suspect I have joined the silly old farts club. Ron.

Oh, God, Ron! What a time to have. Mind, works out 8 hours paddling per day. That's quite a lot, and i bet you felt the muscles working overtime, lol. Sorry to hear about the fall. Let's hope you recover soon, but try and enjoy the rest of the holiday time you have left to do things. At least you have your sense of humour in tact. I'm afraid i laughed at the final sentence.

Really windy last night and today. Sun is trying to come out though.

Nothing spectacular. Overcast with a few overnight showers. Supposedly 30 C, but the SE wind made it seem cooler. Inland Queensland has seen a horrific loss of livestock due to flooding.

There is almost an inland sea in the NW of the State in areas that until now were veritable dust bowls. There are no words to express the hardships that people and animals, native and introduced are suffering. We are so lucky living on a small island that doesn't flood. We count out blessings.
M

Ron,glad you're home safe (ish).I'm afraid I had a little giggle too.Sorry your trip didn't go as planned, but nobody can say you're not a trier.

Merv.we've been watching the floods on our news station. Not good that on top of the devastation there are salties and snakes to worry about.

New rain record for Australia recorded up north at Upper Bluewater. They received a total of 2094 mm in 9 days. That is a lot of rain. Some of the water will head to the Gulf , some will exit thru the east coast streams and a lot of what is falling in the NW will make it down the inland waterways and Lake Ayr will come to life at possibly the highest level seen by most people. Unfortunately the floods that have turned the NW into a gigantic inland sea have also resulted in the deaths of millions of livestock , particularly cattle. Very sad for the same people that have endured drought for many year. Ron. PS Sadly the old fella I was helping thought I had killed myself , I did not mean to upset him after his wife's accident.

Seems like he (they) had a more disappointing time than you did Ron.
I've noticed in the past that a lot of folk, when asked, say,Oh we had a FABULOUSE time.No matter if the weather's crap,or the whole family had food poisoning,or someone spent a week in the local hospital. They don't want to admit how rubbish it all was for too much money.:cool2:

That is true Carol, I've noticed that weeks or months later the truth comes out when the horror stories are told about their trips. Bragging rights wear off early apparently.
We have had another big dump of snow and now I am running out of room to pile it. The snowbanks in some places are higher than I am tall, and it takes considerable effort to hand shovel it all.

Hand shoveling Vs mechanical snow removal depends on one's view of how one deals with snow. I've done both in my lifetime. I learned that using machinery can clear a large area, but having said that it comes at a financial cost I cannot afford on my pension, and more often than not comes with more time effort and trouble in the long run. I have found that doing a minimal amount by hand is faster, cheaper by a long short, and gives me the exercise my body needs. I take my time, enjoy the outdoors while I am doing it. No sense complaining like many do for it will snow again.

I'm not going to complain about the strong winds and rain today, and last night. Not when we see what is going on in Australia. I cannot believe how this world is changing. So sad when there is loss of life, whether human or animal. I think i'm grateful that here in the UK we really don't get too much trouble weather wise.

9c,windy,sunny,short sharp showers.Same tomorrow.

Buff, don't try to compete with the machine.Shovel when you can then rest.

Having said that,I find that if I do a bit then rest a while,I don't want to get started again. And that's just the dusting.hahaha

Hot and humid . Did not fall off or over anything yesterday and did not get sunburned. I saw the chemist yesterday about my hands. He said my use of aloe , betadine and Savlon crème was the right treatment. He said my hands were not hot and no smell so it appears there is no infection. The only thing I am missing from Miara is the constant 20 knot seabreese which kept everything cool. I don't miss the sandflies and mosquitoes . Ron.

8c and very windy with gusts up to 70mph,sunny though.I have bed linen on the washing line with about 200 pegs in.
Apparently it's been so cold in New York that flashers in Central Park have been forced to describe themselves to people......
