Hi Tony, I've had the colostomy for 22 years now, they took out half my colon and the terminal ileum and the plumbing worked well all these years, but I have been having pains and strictures in what is left of the colon, and the rectum has been bleeding and messy. When I had a colonoscopy done last year they couldn't make it through the strictures, an MRI was done and the doctor wants to remove my rectum and likely what what is left of the colon. I am diagnosed as pre cancer, so they want the rectum out. For the most part the bag works well, but there are times particularly if my output gets watery I have containment breaches; no fun at all. So the thought of living with constant watery output concerns me, along with the cost. Currently I can get 6 days before I change it. I'm 64, and like you I have high blood pressure, and arthritis. Buff.

2C increasing cloudiness. They are calling for a colder pattern next week, any chance for a milder spring is on hold now. They graded the roads making them much better, it should have been done weeks ago. I'll give that product a try Tony, anything to make the nights easier. I woke up to a bomb in the bag in the middle of the night as it filled right up to the max, no need to elaborate. I slept better after that. Wet snow coming this afternoon, I may not get much done.

If you can't source them locally I can send you some , I always order more than I need and I get them free over here .

28C, nothing like a warm summer day with the window airconditioner humming in the background. We may have had 5 days of it last summer. Summers are not what they used to be, we get a lot of cold rains now and its not uncommon for the heating to come on in July. Yesterday we had snowflurries in the afternoon while I took my walk, pretty typical for the time of year. Today will be a bit milder. I was greeted by several excited chipmunks this morning as they are coming out of hibernation, and the geese were flying north honking, a sure sign that spring is here, but summer is still away's off. Tony, I'll take a look at what's available from the medical supply site I buy my colostomy supplies from.

3C sunny with a chilly north wind. The surgeon's office called while I made breakfast, surgery could be as soon as early May. After some recent difficult nights, I will gladly take an earlier appointment. On the other hand there is a lot of uncertainty going forward with how I heal up. On the upside I have the whole summer ahead for healing, so I have the strength going into fall and winter. Who knows what else they may find, and when the internals hurt so bad at night it makes me wonder, and I would not be at all surprised if they do, and just hope its found early enough.
 
A really cold and blustery 7c with showers threatening....a short walk around the park then bum on seat with a good book.

I'm not going to say don't worry about your upcoming apt .Buff. it's the nature of the beast .but let's hope it's not as bad as it could be eh?
 
The ice is breaking up on the lake, it tempting to take the canoe out, but today the cold raw easterly wind is at play, and there is rain and possibly snow in the forecast. With two weeks to go there are a lot of loose ends to deal with most notably firewood. I'm just cutting and splitting, and will concern myself with piling it later. I don't want a big wood pile by the house until the majority of the fire season has passed.
 
houston -- we are cooking pretty good for april. forecast to hit 32C this week with sauna like humidity. today plan on exercising in the sauna for a little while - then go home and do some pushups and stuff. my pecan tree finally sprung. it's the last tree in the neighborhood to wake up from winter. didnt get any pecans last year -- the historic extreme heat and drought caused that (i assume)
 
Another cold biting windy day,sunny and short sharp showers....Earthquake in South Australia,4-1 on the richter scale and felt 200kms away......Also floods in Dubai due to torrential rain and airport is flooded if anyone's going today......
 
6c with strong easterly winds , overcast with misty rain , would be a good day for sitting by the fire in a pub but I don't drink anymore and no point going to a put if you can't have a pint , well I can dream and remember anyway
 
cold and miserable again...managed to get out to the shops and very glad to be home again.
I keep looking at my summer clothes with longing and those who know me know I'm really not a "summer" person, but I'm getting fed up of wearing layers and socks etc
 
2C Mainly cloudy and soggy. Carol I have always related to April as being the bottom of the barrel of the year, the coldest most miserable hopeless month of the year. The upside is that it can only get better going forward although its a long slow process. I like summer, but it doesn't get nice around here until mid July when the warmth builds and the worst waves of the biting flies has finally peaked.
 
Most people know I dislike spring the most of all seasons, it would be great if we could skip to summer and leave the cold wet mess and biting flies behind. But like bills, we have to pay for the seasons, and this is how mother nature does it. Blustery with flurries, gray 1C.
 
A nice day BUT a very chill wind from the north gusting along the coast....we went down to one of the little beaches on the river side and collected some drift wood for the back garden...I love driftwood and like to wonder where it came from and how long it;s been adrift....it doesn't take much to make me happy....I'm a cheap date.
I keep hoping our mate Ron is going to show up....
 
I understand that the European spring can be beautiful and much warmer. It went down to -5C overnight and its sitting on the freezing mark. I washed the truck yesterday and it looks so much better without looking like a filthy pig and did a supply run. I am buying extra things before surgery, a lot of heavy items I will not be able to carry post op.
 
It's good that you're organised and in control Buff,it makes life so much easier....
A bright day but still cold for the time of year at 7c and breezy....but like I've said before no floods (well not up here anyway) no volcanoes erupting ,no quakes or tornadoes or wild fires and no biting flies, except for midges in Scotland and ticks that is,but we don't have them here on the coast....worse we get are visitors
 
When it comes to good weather, its grab it while you got it. Today looks better after a wet blustery cold spell, but that won't last as there is snow in the forecast next week. The discomfort at night limits what I get done as I am not properly rested. All of this makes it easier to accept the risks of this surgery. 2C Partly cloudy with an icy breeze.
 
Global Warming is definitely not here in the North East of England !!!
cold and damp again.I've just put the heating on for my darling when his gets out of the pit at 9am....after I've taken his nice cup of tea in to him of course.
 
That's typical it gets nice and warm and then you have to turn on the heating again,
We have less than 100 lt of oil left and I'm trying hard not to buy more until October so warm jumpers and heating pads until then ,
16C and cloudy with the odd blast of 🌞

did somebody say global warming? a pic from my back yard, everything in the sky is spray, zero clouds. have many more pics of similar activity. it's pervasive around here, houston

today's weather is probably our last cool-ish weather until october. going to get outside and enjoy it :) before the cooking sets in

-1C with a fresh centimeter of snow after a warm day yesterday when we hit 15C. Pretty typical, the climate lobby claims our region as being one of the most affected by global warming. Yet nothing has changed here in the 50 years I lived in the area, the snows come and go at the same time as does the freeze thaw cycle of the lakes. If anything summers are getting cooler and wetter, and its the same wildfires year after year. What has changed is the sensationalism of weather rising fuel bills, and the great Boreal forest that has been reduced to tree farming and stumps.
The surgery is getting very real now, I got instructions for pre op, and I feel like I'll be strapping in for quite a journey.
 
You know we're sending good thoughts your way Buff and that's all we can do. I hope you have neighbours that will call on you
and see you OK. while you recup.......who's minding your furry housemate ?
 
Hey Bufford, best of luck with the pre op , hopefully you will get the go ahead and have the surgery soon , positive thoughts and prayers heading your way across the ocean .
,turned out to be a lovely day here 19C and clear skies for most.of the afternoon , spent most of it outdoors listening to the birds singing and enjoying the heat going into my bones .
 
Bit cooler 😎 today 14C but still nice enough to get a walk , now sitting in the garden listening to calming music and beautiful birdsong in the background, life is good for a while 🙂
 
A bright sunny day after going down to -10C overnight. I am running the wash and will hang it out on the line, and then later load up the cardboard, paper and other recyclables, and clean up the house. I'll miss the cat, the neighbor will come over to feed her and water the indoor plants.
 
Not much change here with a cold breeze off the sea...8c but with the wind chill making it fell colder......the sun is giving out some heat though in sheltered corners so there's hope for us
 
It was a crisp clear day yesterday, got the wash done and the house looks a whole lot better now. Nice picture of spring Tony. The pains let up enough to make me think I'm okay, only to return to the reality I need the surgery. I am going to get some more bedding in case of disasters as I do not know what to exactly expect once I am discharged and back home.
 
A lovely day here,sunny but still cooler than it should be for the time of year BUT I've got washing on the line.First time in weeks.It's because I make sure we go out most days and the weather has been iffy so don't want to leave it out when I can't get it in quickly.
Buff,Les could never be as organised as you are,even before dementia arrived......I've really spoilt him eh? but we are what we are,and he was always a good worker and provider,still would be if he could.It's all he talks about sometimes.
 
A bit warmer, but windy before the next round of rain and possibly wet snow for the weekend. I stocked up ahead of the surgery yesterday. I got plenty of apple juice for the day of the purge, the prep is no different than a colonoscopy, except for the round of antibiotics of Flagyl and Cipro.
 
best of luck with the prep Bufford , I think I hate that more than any procedure or operation , 10C but dull and dreary with a cold easterly wind , no interest in even going out the door
 
A lovely day at last.Warm and sunny with a light breeze but rain on the way tonight and.
most of tomorrow.....I agree re: prep I absolutely dread it....but I always feel good for a day or two after the event.
I would normally say I'll be thinking about you Buff but in this instance I'll pass...or try to.
 
The prep is the worst of all, worse I have to make the long drive on the day of the prep ( but before drinking that nuclear stuff) to the pre op consultation, so it will be a long day. Instead of coming home with a treat to eat, I'll be downing the nasty stuff. However, given the troubles down below in the boiler room so to speak I will be glad to get the surgery done, get rid of the messy rectum and hopefully the pains as well.
Typical weather for the time of year, cold raw easterly winds and rain 3C. No worries about wildfires, one could not light a match outside in these conditions.
 
Wet to say the least.....we were going to a book fair today but it looks like the rain is here for the day so we're staying put.
'Despite giving 50+ books to charity I've got more than enough to keep me happy ,at least 2-3 years worth.....

we've had a walk down to the river mouth but boy that bank back up home is getting steeper by the week.
I've been up and down it all my life and remember the days when I didn't even notice the incline.Maybe having two or three German Shepherd dogs helped haul me up..Even terrier Alfie did his bit,
 
Glad ye enjoyed the walk by the river Carol , it really does the body and soul good to be near water ,
Got a walk in today with the golden girl (dog not wife ) and really enjoyed it , strong wind the the sting is gone out of it ,for the moment at least , 14 C windy with some sunshine
 
There is nothing quite like going for a good walk, the fresh air is like a tonic. I may do that later, and it will be the last one until post op. We received a centimeter of snow this morning, everything is white and very calm. The black clouds of the operation are building to the west and rumbling, I am trying to get everything ready. Preparing for the best and the worst scenarios, and bought extra cat food and litter for the box in case it turns into a long hospital stay.
Since I start fasting and purging tomorrow, I splurged on a large breakfast, and a big supper later. I had a big plate of bacon and eggs, and since the doctor couldn't see it, it doesn't count. -1C flurries.

When I went for a walk yesterday I had hat scarf and coat ,by the time I was home ,coat was off scarf and hat were off and I was drenched in sweat 😓,

Thanks for the inspiration Tony, its very real now, the fast is on and I had a glass of apple juice for a breakfast. The cat was sleeping in the hospital bag. Yesterday I went for a walk to the lake, looked at my completed dock and wondered if I will be using it, or if my condition becomes worse, it will become somebody else's dream. I guess I will find out, when they go in.
 
Hey Bufford rooting for you ,all you can do is face is head on , it's funny just got a letter from my colorectal surgeon about an hour ago ,appointment Thursday to see him ,so I could be joining the Ken club as well soon , I got a pre operative assessment over 3 years ago and they forgot about me since 😀 , I think you will be fishing from that dock soon with a bit of luck and some prayers and positive thoughts .
 
I don't know what to say Buff, except please think positive, you sound really down and it's just not like you my friend.Please update us as soon as you're able.
14c today but misty on the coast.At least the wind and rain 's having a day off.

Heavy rain clearing but feels cold 12C

Finally got to see my surgeon today , and will be having a Proctectomy(Barbie Butt)either this coming Wednesday or Wednesday week ,
Kinda shocked at the speed it's happening but glad it finally happening, had a scope today and he told me it looks all clear but took samples .
 
Well I don't know what to say Tony,except I hope it all goes well for you.....I hope Buff has come through his investigation OK too.
I'm in a wee bit of a quandary regarding my innards but it's to soon to worry about it for now. My big problem is Les....If I mention my little problems (and they are little...for now) I really don't want to / can't, leave Les If I need to be admitted.....The consultant is going to phone me soon for a chat so I'll have to decide then.It's a bugger when we've no family support to rely on....
A nice day here,mild and calm but I heard three rumbles of thunder when out for our walk...enjoy your weekend and don't get tangled around the Maypole.......does Ireland have Maypoles ?

Hey Carol ,I've preop Tuesday and op the following day ,so all being good I will check in late Wednesday or early Thursday, think I'll have to watch the Barbie movie to see what I have in my future .

I'm back on the right side of the hospital window, back in the world instead of looking at it from the gurney. It was an 8 hr surgery, they did it laproscopic and saved a small portion of my colon. If I may say it was a wild ride of a journey between the crazy dreams of being chased by bears, the noisy place and what I called the coffee club early bird couple in the next bed blabbing endlessly, which didn't help with me being a night owl. The other thing is that the hospital is located in a community an hour east in the other time zone. This made getting any sleep difficult. I took it upon me to get out of the bed often for short walks and heal up to get out of that cage.
The peace and quiet at home is the best thing. I'm thinking about Tony, I'm sure he is like me a week ago; a plane wreck at the end of the runway. But one thing at a time and its all the way back up and away with life. (y)
 
I'm really happy to hear from you both and all the bad stuff is over for now.....I was beginning to feel like Bessie no mates.
Take it easy boys......18c here and a lovely day BUT I really don't need it any warmer thank you very much.
 
Hey Carol ,starting the healing process ,the only problem is that I have to eat a lot of really nice stuff for the next month or so to help with healing ,but 😀 seriously doing well ,even had a small walk already and Bufford is on the way as well ,will keep you updated
 
Hi Carol, I am doing well, it was abit rough at first, but now I developed a routine at home resting and taking it easy. It's a great excuse to do nothing and spend time calling friends and family. 10C with sunshine. I see recovery after a major surgery as a new start on the next chapter of life. Life is a journey, I am looking forward what comes around the next bend.
 
It seems to me Buff,that you're always busy and you made sure to get it together before your foray into hospital,so it's good that you're taking it easy now,but please don't worry about stuff getting over looked for a while,a GOOD while. Tony has the BOSS the keep him in line but I'm sure he's a " problem child " at times.....most men are,I know mine is !!!!

Since I never married marks me the impossible man, I'm okay to wear that badge. It might be not so bad when I hear about the issues my nephew and others deal with. However, there's no free lunch, I still have to carry out the trash and bring in the firewood. Day three of being home, and so far so good. I enjoy this holiday from work. 8C Cloudy, but the world is beginning to green up, all it would take are a couple of warm sunny days for the leaves to pop.
 
Last night the clouds parted and there was a northern lights display that lit up the night. There has not been one like this in years. The same solar storm was threatening the power to go out, but it held up. Its a nice warm sunny day coming up, and I am going to enjoy life in the slow lane. 12C under brilliant sunshine.

Forgot to say doing well apart from the barbed wire in my rear end , but getting there slowly but surely , all woulds are clean and clear of infection so long may that continue

We've had the N.Lights for two nights running and more to come.It's the best show for 20yrs....BUT I missed it yet again, even though I'm the worst sleeper in the world....But lots of great pics on social media to enjoy

I was going to ask Tony but Mam and Dad brought me up Not to ask personal questions and wait until your told .Glad to hear all's positive so far. Buff's not sharing,but that's OK. As long as he's coping that's the most important thing.
 
Again we had quite a light show last night, and the power was doing some weird things but stayed on. Its likely due to the long power lines we have in these remote parts. Carol, I am faring quite well, I am glad I have a reserve of percocet at home because the doctors are reluctant to prescribe enough for proper pain relief. They gave me a prescription for 20 tablets, which is peanuts for such a surgery. I called the office on friday for more and more bandage supplies but office closed. Without my back up reserve I would be in the worst way for pain. The medical system needs to change their view on pain meds because politics has overtaken the medicine cabinet. The focus needs to be put on the current situation the patient is facing; pain puts stress on the healing process which can lead to pure misery, loss of sleep which drains the strength from the body which can lead to further complications like infections and others. Drug dependence or addiction should be the last thing the medical system should be concerned about, the focus must be placed on the current situation the patient is dealing with. I had no problems tapering from the pain meds last time.
I'll be having the discussion with the doctor's office on Monday. One has to speak one's mind, be pointed to get the proper care these days, always offer reasons, be firm and be kind. Its a changed world.
I am going to have a snooze and then lunch, my appetite is improving, one day at a time, one small step forward, but expect setbacks, like the poor sleep I had last night.

I agree with every thing you say regarding pain meds,Buff I'm in my mid seventies and.....No I'm not going to whinge about my probs when you and Tony are both recovering from quite serious surgery.....just that,
how do they (Medics) know just how much pain you're in ? and at our (my) age if we get addicted or dependant, then so what ? we're not going to cost the government money by asking to go into re- hab, are we? Just let us live our senior years without pain please.
21c but rain on the way tomorrow and a cooler 16c
