I started Skyrizi a few months ago. Just finished the third infusion and I'm about to switch to the on-body injectors.

The complicated thing is my partner and kids live overseas.. so even I'm a U.S resident and only a tourist when I'm overseas.. but now I need to figure out how to carry 1 year of Skyrizi with me.

There are three main problems..
Problem #1) Getting permission from various countries in Asia to actually carry 1 year of Skyrizi. This is very complicated and challenging. Only thing I can do is slowly figure it out. No one is going to help me with it. I have to reach out to every country I'll be traveling through. Even though these are some of the strictest countries in the world for this kind of drug authorization.

I actually don't know how long I'll be staying overseas. I just said "1 year" because I suppose that's the longest possible duration. The country where my partner lives, I only get 30 - 90 days at a time. Then I need to jump over to a neighboring country for a few weeks and then come back again for another 30 - 90 days. This was relatively simple to do in the past, but now that I need to carry a cooler of expensive medicine that cannot be replaced.. so I'm nervous. I've never had to do anything like this before.

Unfortunately, my partner / kids coming to the U.S isn't an option. I also have no permanent housing in the U.S nor any family. So even though I'm a citizen and resident of the U.S.. there is little holding me here except for health coverage. Which is sad but reality. Asian countries are particiularly strict about who to give permanent residency too and citizenship etc is out of the question. No option to get normal health insurance there either. I only can buy travel insurance.. which last year actually DENIED my claim even though it was a genuine emergency.

Problem #2) The instructions for Skyrizi say that it's good ONE TIME out of the cooler up to 25C for up to 24 hours. So only 1 time. Just the flights to get there will be a multi-day trip and I cannot predict delays, cancellations, unexpected issues, etc.

I tried to have the medicine shipped overseas, but the company said that it would literally be impossible and they are unwilling to assist with that.. so I feel I'm on my own to transport this medicine.

Problem #3) I've never actually seen the Skyrizi on-body injectors in person.. and I never transported temperature controlled medicine before in my life. I don't really understand how big the cooler needs to be to carry 6x Skyrizi injectors. I looked at travel coolers on Amazon but when I asked them about Skyrizi.. they said that only 1x Skyrizi injector can fit inside. So how big and heavy is this cooler going to be to carry? Can someone please give me a better idea? I'd love if someone can suggest what exact cooler I need to buy to transport 6x Skyrizi. I asked AbbyVie on the phone but the guy only had general copy and paste info.. with no specific information on how to carry more than 1x for trips lasting more than 24 hours. Whenever I call AbbyVie they're always reading generic info off of a screen. There's no brainstorming of any kind. :( I really feel on my own.

I also don't know how many ice packs I need to transport 6x Skyrizi or what kind of ice pack or how large.

Technically, I should probably get the cooler within the next week or two so I have time to play with it a bit. But I don't know what cooler I would need to buy for this task!

TIA

because I'm a tourist in all of these countries.. and it would take a long time (years) to find a solution or alternative to that.. so having a different status isn't an option either. Because someone from AbbyVee asked me whether I could apply for their help in other countries. But I already asked about it last year and those programs are specifically for citizens of those countries and definitely not tourists.. so that idea is not possible.

https://www.abbvie.ca/content/dam/abbvie-dotcom/ca/en/documents/products/SKYRIZI_PI_EN.pdfSo skyrizi injection can be stored between 2 and 8 C for as Long as you like (basically cooler with ice packs ) refrigerator bricks tend to stay colder longer (48 hours or more ) you would need to experiment
You can get a digital thermometer
Where the thermometer stays in the cooler on the meds and the remote part with the temperature reading can stay with you so you don’t have to open the bag .
Not sure how you will get insurance to give more than 8 weeks (one shot ) at a time .
Cooler vary just be sure to get a good cooler and test it .

i just got my first Skyrizi OBI.. and the box (with the medicine info on it) is pretty huge.. it's bigger than expected.. it's OK to take the OBI out of the box right? I'm definitely going to need to consolidate weight and space.

So if I leave the OBI in the medicine box.. the "travel cooler" that Abbyvee mailed.. it only just barely fits 1 with ice packs.

I'm trying to envision how to carry 5 of these things :(

Like MLP said - how will you get your doctor/pharmacy to dispense a years' worth of medication? Usually there is a limit on how much of any medication can be dispensed at one time - usually a 30-90 day supply... I don't know how you would be able to transport and carry a years' worth with you, sorry...

It's already been approved by the pharm company. Just made a simple request. I just got the simple Abbyvee travel cooler but it literally only fits 1x box of Skyrizi. I guess I'll need to remove the box (packaging) from the actual Skyriki OBI. That seems to be the only way to fit multiples.

i also was looking for options to carry biologic overseas and I found this that keep meds in range of refrigerator for days. can be hooked to USB also. looks cool to me. haven't tried it, but about to purchase because my trip is in 2 weeks. I know this is stresfull to travel with this condition and especially with this type of med.

Greetings from Chicago 👋

Could you please give us an update about traveling with SKYRIZI?

I’m trying to figure out a solution too.

The only thing I can think of is opening the carton in a dark room; carefully removing the cartridge; placing it in a makeshift cardboard holder of sorts to prevent it from moving around inside one of those usb coolers.
Do you know if the on body injector needs to be refrigerated as well??

I’d appreciate any insight you can share!

sincerely,
-Sam

Only thing I can think of is that when I signed up with Skyrizi they gave me a nurse ambassador for questions and all. I admit that I've been too busy to actually contact this person though (I'm getting my 2nd infusion this week). It seems like you should be able to contact this person and they might have some ideas for you...

I spoke with a nurse the other day.. unfortunately she wasn’t very helpful…
But there’s always a solution to every problem, so I’ll continue thinking/searching till I find a way.
The saga continues!

Thanks for the tip!

SKYRIZI is overly complicated by design, I’m sure due to proprietary control.

There’s a pen and prefilled syringe for psoriasis.. but for Crohn’s it’s a different freakin story.

The system is designed with two components: the medicine cartridge, and the battery operated on body injector.

The reasoning behind this design, I don’t understand, and frankly it pisses me off!

This creates an unnecessary dilemma as regards international travel because one is instructed NOT to open the big carton; hence to maintain the entire carton refrigerated for 24hr+ is the problem.

I have to figure out a way!

I think the the medicine cartridge is inserted into the body injector by the pharmacy. Can you ask your pharmacy to keep it separate?

I just want to confirm that the medication does come separate from the injector. It is a small vial and you can easily store 6 in a small container to maintain the temperature.
