It does seem that way, doesn't it? But since it's a blood sugar issue instead of an appetite issue, it kind of makes sense.
Have you read the
His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman? The first book is called
The Golden Compass. It's usually found in the children's section, I believe, but please don't let that deter you! It's one of those things that you can read when you're younger, but you probably won't understand all of the underlying themes. The entire thing is really complicated when you look into it; it's absolutely fascinating.
Stephen King is always a good bet! Well, kind of. A lot of his longer novels can be kind of drawn out, so I'd suggest his short stories.
Night Surf is a fantastic collection. If you want something long,
The Stand is incredible - but definitely time-consuming. It goes on forever, but he definitely kept my attention.
It is also pretty good. I really enjoyed
Rose Madder,
Hearts in Atlantis, and
Lisey's Story, too.
My favorite author is Richard Laymon. His novels can be kind of hard to find (or at least they are around here). He's more horror than suspense. It's sort of an easy read, but very good. Can be mildly disturbing if those sorts of things get to you. All of his novels are fantastic, but my favorites are
The Traveling Vampire Show,
After Midnight,
The Lake, and
Island.
Bentley Little is also great. He's another horror author.
The Academy and
The House were especially good. Honestly, he gets under my skin more than any other author. Chuck Palahniuk is good, too. Not horror, just creepy and hilarious! He wrote
Fight Club. I'd recommend
Choke and
Survivor.
On the other side of the spectrum, Jodi Picoult is great. Have you read
My Sister's Keeper, or seen the movie? It's a very, very touching story. I've liked most of hers that I've read, especially
Nineteen Minutes,
The Pact, and
Handle With Care.
I love Gregory Maguire, as well. Are you familiar with
Wicked? That's a fantastic book (although honestly, I didn't enjoy the rest of the series - but that's just me!).
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is a fantastic story about the real meaning of beauty. It's a spin on Cinderella, of course.
Mirror, Mirror is a re-telling of Snow White; I like that one, too.
I'm currently reading
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. I'd definitely recommend it, as well.
And, of course,
A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin. It's also referred to as the title of the first book,
A Game of Thrones. Incredible, incredible series. The TV show based on it is great, as well!
I can't think of any more right now, but hopefully that'll keep you busy for a while. If you do read any of them, let me know how you liked them! I love to talk about books.
