What is YOUR weather like today??

The death toll is increasing daily in Vanuatu but aid is getting in . As always in these situations you need some skilled people on the ground to get the priorities right. Looks like we may not have finished with cyclone Nathan in Queensland. It has been mooching around the Coral sea for a few days but in the last twenty four hours it has intensified to cat 2 again soon to be cat three. Modelling has it moving back towards the coast and possibly crossing towards the end of the week near Townsville. For those that live in the cyclone ,hurricane , typhoon belts it is hard to not think of these storms as living entities. They all have personalities. Ron.

Nathan expected to cross the Qld coast around 10am Friday morning at anything from cat2 to cat 4 . It is a real mystery storm. For a start it has been hiding in clear view in the Coral sea for seven days ,sitting almost stationary as a cat one. Now it is cat 2 and intensifying. We really don't know what to expect from these storms any more. The one that hit west Australia last week came down through the centre of the west and into the Great Australian bight where it has intensified and headed east. At last report it was lashing Victoria with gales. Pam has headed south and is roughing up some islands off the New Zealand coast. Who would be a weather forecaster? Ron.

Are these cyclones normal for Australia? I never really remembered hearing about them over the years. perhaps its just the world wide weather changes. Stay safe, and sorry, but I love the reports from you. Thank God we just don't have those to contend with.

Yes cyclones are an integral part of the great monsoon trough that covers south east Asia in summer. They normally form south of the equator and are exactly the same as hurricanes in every respect except they spin in the opposite direction. They have the same rating system from 1 to 5. Australia has only had five cat 5 storms in recorded history two in the last three years. In the past there has been massive loss of life. One hit a pearling fleet at anchor in the early 1900's with almost total loss and the lives of all on board. Farther up in Asia they are not called hurricanes or cyclones but typhoons. All the same critter with different spots. In the past they rarely came below the tropic of Capricorn( Rockhampton on the east coast) but with global warming and hotter sea temps they claim that within three decades ,Sydney, 600 kilometres south of Brisbane will be in the cyclone zone. That will not worry me . World weather fascinates me I just don't want it to become a fatal attraction. Ron.

Misty start here on the east coast. 2pm now and a watery sun,but quite cool.

We've got Northern lights tonight AND a solar eclipse on Friday,(my hubbys birthday) but it might be too cloudy to see much.

Well, I shall be well jealous of you seeing the northern lights. Both my friend and I were silly enough just to take a look to see if we could see anything. Nothing, not this far south. We are looking forward to the solar eclipse.

It is almost the start of winter and we are expecting 35c for the next couple of days. Not happy! There have been people oohing and aahhing all over Australia the past couple of nights. We rarely see the aurora Australis. But that big sun flare a few days ago is putting on a great show over a lot of Australia. I knew that they are caused by charged particles hitting the magnetic field and the upper atmosphere but I did not realise that the different colours are caused by all sorts of different chemical compounds in the upper atmosphere. Cyclone Nathan continues to approach the North Queensland coast . Still expected to arrive on Friday morning between Cairns and Cardwell. High cat three at the moment and they think it will reach cat 4 by Friday. Ron.

We had record highs for this area and time of year yesterday, but today is a little cooler. I'm glad, I don't want a hot summer.

It was awfully hot today ,temps around 35 ,same tomorrow. Nathan is on track to hit just north of Cairns as a cat 4 tomorrow morning. They believe it will have enough impetus to cross the cape and re-intensify in the gulf of Carpentaria. It is likely to hit the same remote communities in Arnhem land that were battered a few weeks ago by another cyclone. Not a happy prospect for those that live there. Ron.

Further to my comments the other day re cyclones: Cat 5 tropical cyclone Mahina hit Bathurst bay on the fourth of march 1899. The pearling fleet were anchored up in Bathurst bay . Over 55 luggers were sunk at their moorings . Divers found that most had their masts sheered off level with the decks by the 260+ kilometre an hour winds. The winds also drove a 14.6 metre tsunami over Flinders Island. Thirteen porpoises were found dead fifty feet up a cliff face on Flinders Island. They had been hurled to their deaths by the wind and the waves. The death toll ,almost entirely made up of the crews of the luggers, was 307. It is considered one of the worst natural disasters to hit Australia since European colonisation. Scary stuff, in those days there was no warnings just the rising gale and rain. Ron.

Not yet 7 am Friday morning and the thermometer in my computer area is reading 34c. Maroochydore ,just to the east of me , yesterday recorded its highest march temp of 36.2 since records began. Out west they were .2c short of their highest march temp at 46.2. Nathan hit the coast at 3 am at cat4. We are very fortunate in north Queensland we have a lot of sparsely populated areas between the larger towns. Nathan came ashore just north of cape Flattery. It is sparsely populated and the ridge of the cape helped to protect the areas to the south, mainly Cooktown. Although it was intense its area of influence was only 300 kilometres. Cooktown caught the edge of the storm and had gales and heavy rain but so far not much damage. We are extremely lucky that cyclones are such lousy shots. Ron.

Perfect blue sky and 14C in Oxford.

It was a bit cloudy for the eclipse, but that at least meant you could look at it without burning your retinas. On of my colleagues brought in his telescope with proper sun filter so we got a pretty good look.

Cloudy start, but they parted once or twice ,which was enough to catch a glimpe of the eclipse. The sun shines directly into our bedroom at that time in the morning.(I was up and about though hahaha)The sun eventually broke through, and it's been a nice spring day.13c.

Well cyclone Nathan has left us but not gone, just someone elses problem. It crossed the cape but quickly reformed in the gulf as a cat 1 cyclone heading for Arnhem land and expected to build to cat2 then hit Darwin as a rain depression . It is still hot in the South east and South west of Queensland. We had another 35c day yesterday and some of the western towns hit new record highs for march of over 47c. 31-2 for the next week .C'mon winter. Ron.

Welcome, Hangry, I see Canada and the US are having a bad time of snow this winter with records broken everywhere. Hope you get to see some flowers soon.

White sky at dawn, now clear blue, sunny and not so cold.

Was lovely in the garden, real spring weather and warm too. First day it has actually felt like spring and apart from this morning my reynauds numb fingers/hands didn't give me grief. I'm so pleased with today. But, if I had energy... I could have been doing..... anything interesting.
Hope you have spring weather where ever you are soon.

It has been raining here for almost 2 weeks. Trees fell yesterday from being so waterlogged and shut down one of the only 2 streets in and out of the neighborhood.

I am thankful for the rain though, we have been in a drought for awhile.

They have just issued warnings for the Arnhem land coastal and island communities to shelter and stay sheltered until Nathan has passed. It is currently approaching Arnhem land as a cat2 cyclone with destructive winds up to 160+ kilometres per hour. Some of these cyclones seem to live forever. We had storms yesterday. They came up quickly and some produced rain of over 60mm in thirty minutes resulting in flash flooding. Several cars were washed away in Brisbane. One man and his wife were out kayaking when hit by a flash flood . She made it to safety. Swift water rescuers recovered his body last night. The temps have dropped a little overnight but the humidity makes it feel much hotter. Ron.

Spring definitely has sprung

Yeah there's definitely been a lot. Here's to hoping spring comes soon. :ybatty:

@Can't. That sounds bad, I suppose other trees are also finding it difficult and are also under threat of falling. Sounds like a no win situation. Need the rain, but then it floods and does damage. You have our sympathy.
@Ron, your bad weather doesn't let up does it?
@Sandy, whoopee, you got flowers too. Sun with some white clouds and I have got the heating on this morning due to numb fingers/hands, toes/feet. Hopefully I can turn it off this afternoon.

More snow here - about 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) overnight.

A record breaking year - before of the last storm on March 17 we had received 446 cm of snow this year (since November) - that's 14.6 feet. The record was 424 cm in 1963-3.

Very spring like today.Saw new lambs while out in the countryside this morning, and sat in the sun-shine at the park, this afternoon.( Wearing coats of course). The nights are still frosty though.

-10F this morning and not suppose to warm up more than that.Spring my arse! It is a nice sunny morning and the birdsong has switched to Springtime melodies, however,so it is on the way. Lots of snow yet to melt...this has been a looong Winter.

10c,cloudy with intermittent sun. Leaves are appearing on the shrubbery.Chilly nights forecast, but today I bought a summer weight duvet in anticipation.......bring it on !!!

Today it's cold and drizzly. Even my dog wants to stay inside. But we desperately needed the moisture, so I'll just grab some hot cocoa and maybe a good book. Not a bad day.

Cyclone Nathan is expected to come ashore again in the Northern Territory this morning. This will be the third time it has come in. It keeps bouncing back offshore ,re intensifying then coming in again. This time it is expected to finally move across to Darwin as a rain depression. 30-32 c expected here for the rest of the week. Hopefully we will not get any more bad storms but they have not ruled them out. Ron.

Forecast was for wall to wall sunshine today, but there are a few clouds blocking the sun now and again. But no complaints......

32c again today. same forecast again for next week. I sure hope this is not the new normal. Ron.

Same here, Scottsma. Wet, white sky, cold and gloomy.
Yes, Ron, is all ok with you.
Gosh this thread went quiet for a few days. Would spring be taking people away from it.

WELL I thought you may have been sick of me whinging about the weather. Remember cyclone Nathan , well it dumped a heap of rain over Darwin then turned tourist. It wandered across the Kimberly coast and down the west coast to Geraldton. It then took a left turn and drifted right across Australia until it got back to South East Queensland on Thursday ,climbed over an east coast trough and met an offshore rain band. It has been sitting over us for three days dragging in rain from off the sea. Most of the south east has had between 100 and 250mm of rain. Because it is Easter and everyone is on the road there have been at least three or four fatal rain related traffic accidents in the last two days. As of tonight eleven of the South east water impoundments are all overflowing resulting in dangerous flooding in the rivers below the dams. We are expecting 30c for the most of next week and heavy rain for two more days . It is enough to put you off your choccy eggs. Ron.(who is bailing again)

Glad you're OK Ron........Thanks for the update ,but it would have to be a tad worse than that to put ME of choccy eggs. Happy Easter (tongue in cheek)

Sunny and 5C with a forecast high of 8C for this afternoon. It may be warm enough to wash the car outside and get some of the winter grime off.

It got up to 12C this afternoon. Warn enough to wash both cars outside and have the patio screen door open after the BBQ.

We have had a cat 5 cyclone in Marcia and Vanuatu had tc Pam cat 5. If you combined those two storms you still would not have a storm the size of the typhoon that is about to hit the phillipines. It is enormous. Seen from space you can just about fit a small country in the eye. Ron.

Sunny and -10C with a -15C windchill - just back in from a morning run.

It's going up to a high of 0 so the snow that we received yesterday evening should melt, the other 80-90 cm that is on the ground will take a while longer.

14c,bright and sunny,no wind.

There is a bank of low cloud/mist off the coast that looks ominous ,but it hasn't moved all morning.

Around 30c today and sunny and it is my birthday. I turned 65 today. After 52 years of work I have qualified for the age pension. On the down side , tomorrow I receive my first shot of testosterone. My endocrine system is playing up. Morning levels of testosterone should be between 8 and 18 with morning levels the highest. Mine is only 5.3. It is effecting my type two diabetes . My BS is consistently 10 or there about . I will have a shot every three months. I guess I should not complain , when I had colon cancer they assured me I would not live to see 50. Ron.

:bdayparty:Happy Birthday Ron:birthday2:

Sunny and warm (ish) but the mist on the sea found its way to shore.

No complaints though.

We've had much needed rain the past day or two, and beautiful blue sunny skies while on a tiny vacation in southern Utah. Couldn't ask for better.

25 in Durban this morning cloudy and humid with mild uv and sweltering have my shorts on ;) see Londons pushing 20 ;)

Temps in the mid to high twenties and a few showers at times. Temps overnight have finally started to drop to between 15-18c which makes for more pleasant sleeping. Easter only had one wet day ,the rest of the time it was perfect tourist weather with good beach temps and conditions. I don't go anywhere at Easter, it is just too dangerous. I think our Easter road toll was 8 in Qld which is the highest in years . I think that people are just in too much of a hurry on the short four day break. Very sad. Ron

12c and dry after yesterdays cold, sleety weather.
I agree with you about travel during national holidays Ron.It's like hell on earth over here when all the idiots take to the roads, and remember,British roads are far narrower and more winding than a lot of other countries especially Aus. and USA. Being on the coast we have lots of walks from the door and that suits us fine during the hols.Less stress.

It is hard to dodge the idiots everywhere. The roads are full of inexperienced lead foots and I can't escape them on the water with their jet skis. Temps are rising again and we are expecting a couple of weeks of 30+ temps and lows of 20+, Ron.

There is a high predicted tomorrow in the sixties (farenheit), but the same weather app also just put out a winter storm warning for the same time. :rof:

10c and overcast up here. The forecast is for 25c down South,London especially.
Frosts forecast during the night so too soon to put bedding in for a while.
We're off to the garden centre for a look 'round though.

I can't believe it! The weather app was correct! It got into the low sixties today, then the wind howled and brought in cold air, and then it snowed. Crazy day.

Still very hot here, high 20's but it is humid and feels like 35. Talking about idiots on the road. The Police in Brisbane tracked a motor bike rider on a suburban freeway via a chopper yesterday. . He was in an 80 kph zone and was clocked at 248 kph. They followed him home and a police car pulled up behind him. They also got him for driving under the influence. In one respect he was unlucky, if anything had have gone wrong there would not have been enough of him left to charge. Ron.

Scarey stuff Ron ::thumbdown: :mad2:

Confusing London 24 Durban 21 and so windy i'm having a bad hair day or would be if i had any :) doing better with my diet though Chicken and rice tonight in Korma sauce with avocado been having Bran flakes and Weetbix for breakfast with free from milk and honey and bananas

Hot and humid again with some heavy showers. I note that they claim that it was the hottest march ever recorded world wide. Looks like I am going to have to get used to 30c. ron.

The hottest April for 100 years allegedly.......

It's been ok,but I think HOT is an over exaggeration....

Of course,we all know that the only city that matters in the UK is London.

10c today with patchy cloud.

3C and sunny here this morning, the forecast high is 8C for the afternoon, still a bit on the cooler side. Our April temperatures have been below normal.

Absolutely glorious. Really like a good British summer day. Not that we have those often. We do seem to have 2 or 3 weeks of good weather over the easter or at least in march/april. Here it is. Then it vanishes for good until next year. Naturally I'm making the most of it.
