Everything that was exciting when we were younger, loses its appeal sooner or later.

I think it's because we are more aware as we age.

Cooler,about 14c so far.Maybe showers later.

Spring has sprung. Our winter was 2 degrees hotter on average than any recorded. I wonder if we are having one of our worst and latest flu seasons has any bearing on our hot winter. Quite possible. Unfortunately we don't have vaccines to counter the current flues . Rates of infection in south east Queensland have risen by 25% this year. I am dodging and weaving for all I am worth. The last flu I had very nearly killed me. It hit me so hard I was leaking troponin the heart attack enzyme. I was lucky my doc picked it up in a blood test and sent me straight to hospital. Ron.

A rain front came thru overnight. 10 c when I went to bed 15c when I woke up this morning. We are expecting storms by mid morning. I will be at work by then ,if the power goes off I won't be unhappy. The boss is on a couple of weeks break and because I have been working there for 38 years the buck stops with me. Ron.

9c,cloudy and damp.Today I am wearing a sweater for the first time in months, and I'm happy.Frosty nights anticipated by the weekend,up this part of the country !!!
Have still got the summer quilt on the bed so maybe a cosy throw will be needed.

Today I can feel a change in the air, even though the temperature is not much different. There is a nice strong breeze blowing though, and I understand that by the weekend it will be significantly cooler. I am so excited.:dance::dance:

Today a 65 year old on a surfski was dragged off his board and mauled by a great white in central NSW. That is the 13 th attack in a year. They have sewed his leg wounds up and he is in a serious but stable condition. NSW isn't and has never been considered a great place to find great whites in Australia. That honour has always gone to South Australia with West Australia a close second. I don't for the life of me know why so many white sharks are turning up in NSW waters. There is a theory that it is because of increasing humpback numbers migrating up the east coast. It is illegal on the east coast to hurt or kill great Whites. They are totally protected. Perhaps they heard the news. Warm day , mid twenties ,sunny conditions just too many sharks. Ron.

I've just been reading about that in the daily paper.I think the theory regarding the whales is probably right. But the whole world is going to hell in a handcart isn't it.?
12c and cloudy today, some snow forecast for the Scottish Highlands over the weekend.

The NSW government does not want to net the beaches because of the danger to other marine creatures like dolphins ,whales and turtles. The nets don't surround the swimming areas they are just across the approaches. Sharks don't have a reverse gear so if the swim into a net they get stuck. It is a very emotive debate between the conservationists and surfers and I can see that they both have reasonable points to support their arguments. I believe that education is the answer . If we can teach the sharks to ONLY chase jet skiers life would be much better. Ron.

Hi Ron, but of a tricky issue there, what is the best approach?hard to know what's best to do. Weather ok this morning in old blighty, quite pleasant, sun is out at the mo :)

9c and grey again,BUT,according to the forecast we're to have an Indian summer starting this week until mid October.........

morning carol , how are you today ? it's sunny n about 11/12 degrees. just hung out some washing, it should dry ok..

25c today, 25c tomorrow and maybe a storm. Then a couple of 23cs followed by a couple of 24cs and finally a 26c. Some rain towards the end of the week. The temps are more regular than my blood pressure. had a good one last Friday 172/119 any wonder I feel like crap most of the time and that is with 4 b/p meds. Not happy, Ron. On the cancer survivors net they had this quiz that predicts how long you will live. It appears I died twelve years ago. Nobody tells me nothing. Ron,

I love your sense of humour Ron,you make me smile (most of the time)

It's warmed up to 18c this arvo,so no complaints. It's dark by 8-8-30pm and dark until 7 am.It's difficult to stir meself in the mornings, but needs must.

Oh carol, that's made me think with new job starting earlier I'll be going and coming in the dark, might be a good thing with my fizzog ;-)

I'm always in the dark, even when the sun is shining.:ybatty:
It should be a pleasant day outside, sunny, with a high in the high seventies. :sun:

Thank you Mandy. And since Carol is going to cook, maybe you can do the laundry while I take a nap? (He he, just kidding.)
Hope your day is lovely too!

Thanks sandy, i'll do your laundry anyday hun, just need to get me an old concord plane n i'll be right over :D

That's what I hate about living alone, there is no escaping anything. I can't even get a really good sleep in because I risk going into withdrawel on the ocycodone and that's not pleasant. Ron.

Yup , says storms on my weather map. Nothing in sight . They said a cold front is coming thru tonight ,no sign of that either. I will probably wake up during the night in the middle of a raging storm and half frozen. What good would life be if it was predictable. Ron.

No thunder overnight though somewhere in the night I had to tuck my arms back under the covers. It is a lot cooler this morning. Ron.

today was pretty nice n fairly warm, tomorrow im planing a walk round to our local reservior, which is a nice scenic walk, so i guess it'll be raining then lol

Did you get wet, Mandy?
Same as yesterday. Tis definitely colder this September.

Hi Spooky, no the weather is dull but fine, but the trip got canceled , my friend who i was going with had a rough night, so she bailed :(.. oh well stuff happens, there will be days were i have to bail too.. Hope your good today hun ..

Still cool and grey.I was going to put the Autumn duvet on when I changed the bed linen earlier, but I was quite warm last night,so I'll keep the 4-5 tog on for now.Have got throws on stand-by just in case.

the cool is only lasting a couple of days. When I say cool it got to 25 c today and it is a gradual rise to sunday when it is going up to 30c. First week or so of spring and we are having our first 30c. Hardly seems fair very disrespectful to winter. The boss comes back Monday. Soon as things settle and the school holidays are over I might hook the boat up and head to the coast up near Frazer island and annoy the fish for a couple of weeks. It is annoying to reach retirement age and not be able to retire because they can't find anyone to do my job. Ron.

Either that or they are too lazy to look. I have been there so long I'm just a habit the can't be bothered trying to shake. I honestly have never believed that I was so great at what I do but unfortunately a lot of the others in my field make me look good. Ron.

So despite all your health issues, Ron, you're very much needed. You obviously do a better job than your younger colleagues. Says everything really.

Has been misty this morning but it's lifting now and the sun is trying to reveal its happiness potential. Will be good this afternoon, so I'm looking forwards to that.

On the news tonight they put out dire warnings for the coming months. We are definitely heading into an el-nino summer and they are warning that because of low humidity ,low rainfall and unusually strong winds our bushfire season could start at any time and is bound to be the most severe for years. I know they were trying to burn off excess fuel in a lot of areas on the coast in the last weeks of winter and quite a few of the fires quickly got out of hand. The snakes are already out and about big time with quite a few people bitten . The snakes don't hibernate here they just are not active in winter . Soon as the weather warms a little they are hungry and randy both or which makes them aggressive and good to avoid. From the time we were little we were always told if we saw a snake , walk away quickly. Works for me except for the quickly bit. Ron.

Oh,Ron,come to England.........Having been to Aus.for hols I know how intense everything is.We actually started the ball rolling and paid our first instalment (£500) towards emigrating. But decided it def.wasn't for us,despite our only son being there.I worry constantly about him and our grandkids.

hi carol, i'll bet you do hun , i worry for those who live with such extremes of weather , it's scary to see or read about, never mind actualy deal with...old blighty might no get much good weather but at least it is not normaly extreme for any lenghth of time...
Ron you keep safe .. and i wish saftey on all who may need it !!

A list of things that can kill you in Australia. In the water. Great white sharks ,bull sharks , tiger sharks and whaler sharks. Several varieties of box jellyfish. Blue ringed octopus ,cone shells , crocodiles and sea snakes. Insects . Sydney funnel web spiders , redback spiders ,white tailed spiders. Snakes. Rough scaled snake ( western taipan and the deadliest snake on earth.) Taipan , tiger snake ,brown snakes , black snakes , mulga snakes ( king blacks and reputed to carry the greatest amount of venom of any snake.) death adders. There are numerous other venomous snakes but they are not considered deadly. Climate. We have some of the hottest places on earth. From November to april is the cyclone season from Se Qld to half way down the WA coast. And summer is the bushfire season. Our weather is dependent on the southern zone oscillation (pacific sea temps) which dictates whether we will be in El nino (more bushfires and droughts) or La nina (more floods). A lot of Australians are blithely unaware of some or all of the above . They only find out when they accidentally come into contact with one of them mainly through accident or stupidity. Chasing snakes with sticks is one of the stupid pastimes that can kill you. In the ocean it is mostly accidental and bushfires are unfortunately part and parcel of living the dream in rural areas with vegetation growing up to the back door and no thought of fires. ( That is beginning to change.)
Given all the things that can kill you , Australians are most likely to die from disease ,suicide or road trauma. If you come to Australia ,don't leave your room ):):): Ron.

Ron,I've just read your post to my Hubby and we're in full agreement.
Not leaving the room part ,brought back memories. We were staying in a Motel and during the night we heard rustling in the waste-paper bin.It was more than likely a harmless lizard, but neither of us were going to look until daylight.

18c sunny and breezy today, but wet and windy on the way,

P.S. Aren't there some plants/trees that can cause anaphylactic shock ?

And I had a run in with a Huntsman spider and I also shared a public loo with a huge Bobtail lizard (stump?)........Happy days,NOT !!!

Yes carol there is a tree in qld that causes extreme pain if you run into it. It's called the Gympie stinging nettle. I haven't experienced it but an English friend said it was like a European nettle on steroids. There are a lot of furry caterpillars that we call itchy grubs that can cause an extreme allergic reaction. One of the group are called army grubs and they follow each other nose to tail. The line can reach several meters in length.
You can't live in Australia without having a run in with a Huntsman spider. They are not considered dangerous. When they get agitated they literally start doing eight legged push ups on the floor. I always thought it was funny then one day one stopped doing his push ups and jumped up on to my ankle and bit me. It really hurt. It and other spiders is one of the reasons that Australians love thongs (the footwear). They make an excellent weapon for dealing with stroppy insects. One of the more recent hazards discovered in Australia is flying foxes. They only eat fruit and you would think that there would not be much to worry about with a fruit bat. But they have been found to carry a deadly virus. Lisa also called Hendra virus. For some reason horses are very susceptible to it and can pass it on to humans and other animals like dogs. It is passed on from the bats via their droppings which gets sprayed on the grass when they are flying. Some years hundreds of horses have to be put down as well as a lot of farm dogs. It was first found in a horse trainer at Hendra a suburb of Brisbane. Vic Rail I think his name was . It is one of those viruses that has a high death rate. They have developed a vaccine for horses but I think it is short lasting and has to be administered often. It is quite expensive and mostly used by those in the racing industry. A veterinarian treating infected horses was the most recent to die. Not pleasant. Ron.

wow ! love reading your posts Ron, so interesting, hope you keep well..
raining here today 1st time in week or so, been really quite nice recently ..

Thanks for that Ron.Really interesting, but SCARY !!!!! Have you got something NICE to share concerning Aus. ???

Cold,wet and windy........and the weather's crap as well (I know,I know,I've done that one before !)

wow, that was enlightening, Ron. I'm also pleased that you informed us of the shoe that is a 'thong', not sure I want to imagine you getting your other thongs off to twang at the said insects.

Has been nice here too, Mandy, but myself I feel like Carol. Outside though it's blue/grey skies, with sunshine and showers. Not exactly cold either.

Hi spooky had a bit of thunder not long back, but rain stopped for now n sun trying to make a break thro ,,,
hope you are good today spooky ..

am feeling a bit better today, thanks. However, I'm still sat amongst all my boxes as I can only do a tad before getting exhausted. Half the time I sleep during the days too. I hate that. Hope to stay awake and enjoy a nice thunderstorm. Love those.

glad your ok hun, oh i dont envy you the moving home thing, darn nightmare that it is.. just take it easy, the boxes aint going anywhere fast .so dont rush yourself, i know we like to get straight n organised asap.. but you will get there even if you take a rest now n then, no point rushing round then feeling to poorly to enjoy your new, neat n tidy home now is there ? .. must admit i like a good thunder storm myself :ycool:...

Still mid twenties but the western suburbs of Brisbane are expecting 31 on Thursday. A bit cooler on the coast at high 20cs. Funny how things happen when you mention it. A news story tonight that a sick flying fox was found in a Brisbane park yesterday . It tested positive for lisa virus and the man who found it and took it to the RSPCA is also being tested. The are asking parents who had their kids in the park yesterday to ask their kids if they saw a flying fox on the ground and if they touched it.
Scary stuff. Flying foxes are a protected species as they not only feed on fruit but also nectar. They are responsible for pollinating a lot of the native trees and plants.
Yes Carol there are some really good things. The area I live in produces some of the most delicious tropical fruits in the world and the seafood is even better. You could not imagine how good a seafood meal is here. Fresh oysters for a start, then a wild caught prawn cocktail. Perhaps some lobster or fresh cracked Queensland mud crab as an appetiser. Main meal Fresh baked whole coral trout served with an avocado salad and for dessert fresh tropical fruit salad with mangoes, paw paw , bananas , pineapple and lychees and fresh cream and icecream. All washed down with as much Aust grown wines and beers if that's your fancy or a cup of Australian tea or coffee. There has to be some reason for living here. Ron.

My sort of food and drink Ron.I was salivating whilst reading (t.m.i I know)
But I'm not convinced good food would over rule the scary wildlife and weather.
Don't get me wrong,I LOVE all creatures great and small. But at a respectful distance.

It's been a nice day today. It was the Great North Run,56,000+ runners of all capabilities.
The Red Arrows Flight display team,(Ex RAF pilots) were wonderful as usual. They flew so close to our house I was going to offer them a cuppa. But they were going too fast.

I watched the GNR on bbc this morning. Overcast but not too cold. Sounds delicious, Ron. Shame I have the Crohn's issues otherwise I'd be over like in a shot.

Didn't they do that GNR in the old days and wasn't in always ruined by 65000+ blue faced Scots doing the GSR. Perhaps that no longer happens tho it did make for a great social get togeather. Another good thing about Australia , we have very little history. Ron.

ye where does the time go, it seems to go quicker every year... is it coz im getting old i wonder lol :)
i love the autumm colours and the fresh crisp mornings, find them bracing as we say here ...

saw it on the news, lol. Was about 20 miles away. I did notice some squally winds pass through and some plant pots were blown over even though they were ceramic. but all is safe here, thanks.

Overcast today.

Back in Thunder Bay, and it's still summer.
A mix of sun and cloud. Fog patches dissipating early this morning. Wind becoming south 20 km/h this afternoon. High 24. UV index 5 or moderate.

hi carol , i went to the shower this morning n in it were 2 spiders so big i thought ron had sent then from OZ for me to see lol , they were like blinking trantulas kid haha, well it dint rain , sun stayed out n i put some washing out , so nice day after all my end..

When does your winter officially start Tuff ?

In Ontario it's officially December 21 to March 19, but here in the northern end we usually get first snow on Halloween night. Snow stays on the ground most of April as well. It can go down to -40C for a few weeks in January, which is downright dangerous. I stay indoors as much as possible then.
First day of fall is September 22.

Brrr, that is cold, Tuff! And tornadoes in the UK. What is this world coming to? Here, I just woke up from my afternoon nap to some heavy claps of thunder, to go along with the rain. (Also, my dog is really assaulting my nose as she really needs a bath. Phew!:stinks:) I hope the window well cover and added earth to slope the rain away from the house will keep our basement dry this time. . .

cold and wet in Alberta. I can take minus 40 c or f but the humidity must be low.

but Tuff, you get the humidity in winter. Brrrrrrrrr......

Living on the shores of where the legends come down on the lake they call Gitchee Gumee (sp)............

30c today ,winds from the north. That means headaches and angry people. Always when the northerlies blow people get stroppy and I admit to being one of the stroppy people. Jobs that are just annoying during southerlies just about become wall ornaments when the northerlies blow. We got a new prime minister down under yesterday. Everyone finally got tired of the old one being such a tosser and his party kicked him out. I think the last straw was at a pacific climate conference last week when he and the environment minister were caught making sick jokes about some of our Pacific neighbours getting wet feet soon. These are hardened pollies , you would think they had the nouse to look up and see they were standing under a microphone. They did an overnight poll and 70% of those polled prefer Malcomn Turnbull as prime minister. Only people sad to see Tony go were the opposition , with him still in control the next election was a forgone conclusion.Ron.

You're lucky,we're stuck with our tosser for 5yrs.I hate the smarmy sw*ne.He's also got a face I really would like to punch....Nice weather today,15c and sunny.Perfect.

The Ojibwe call the lake gichi-gami (pronounced as gitchi-gami and kitchi-gami in other dialects), meaning "be a great sea." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the name as "Gitche Gumee" in The Song of Hiawatha, as did Gordon Lightfoot in his song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

The Song of Hiawatha was written in trochaic tetrameter, the same meter as Kalevala, the Finnish epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot from fragments of folk poetry. In other words, he copied it.

The Ballad of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald always gives me goosebumps when I listen to it.

In the early morning rain is a great but depressing song.

Need some Beethoven to cheer me up.

ha my last name used to be lightfoot, wonder if there is any relation :ysmile:
weather was sunny , with slight chill in the air ..

The only way I can get to sleep some nights is to put on the earphones and listed to a cd. One of my favourites is a home made compilation that includes The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. I love his music , he is such a craftsman in his ability to make a song out of a historical report that has very few rhyming lines. The music is unbelievable. I have read just about everything written about the subject of the song and was brought to tears at the sight of a magnificent old freighter laying broken backed on the bottom of the lake. Shipwreck always get me like that. I felt the same when they finally found the wreck of the Hmas Sydney off the West Australian coast She and the German raider Emden both sank after a one on one dual in WW2. The other was the Australian Hospital ship the Centaur sunk somewhere off Cape Moreton by a Japanese submarine during the war . It was found by the same crew that found the Sydney only a few years ago. It was so sad and erie to see her laying on the bottom with her big red crosses and mens boots laying on the mud beside her. Very sad. Rain today after a very hot day yesterday. It really knocked me around . Ron.

I too am a Gordon Lightfoot fan.
We have had a sad couple days in Utah with the weather. Some flash flooding from the rain insouthern Utah swept a couple of vans filed with children and women down a canyon and killed twelve or thirteen of them, plus some hikers in Zion National Park were swept away to their deaths from flash flooding in that area also. (All of Utah is getting rained on. And my basement is flooded again. But that is just concrete and unfinished basement.)
Rain, rain, go away!

I am really sad to hear that Sandy. I hate to hear of folk being lost to floodwaters. I know it makes my blood boil over here when I hear of some impatient adult putting their kids and grandkids at risk by entering floodwaters. There are hefty fines and prison for those that survive. I don't know what the situation was over in Utah I hope there is no one having to feel guilty for what happened it can be a terrible burden , Hugs Ron. I hope you don't have too much more rain.

Nobody was at fault, couldn't have seen it coming. It was a flash flood that came roaring out of a slot canyon (slot canyons are pretty much indigenous to the American southwest, much deeper than they are wide) and suddenly wiped out a piece of a road, carrying the vehicles with it in the one case. The other location with lives lost was hikers that had gone up a slot canyon, no knowing that flash floods were coming. There was no way to notify them, no cell service, etc. in the area because of the national park status and trying to keep the area in pristine and natural condition. The hikers were registered to be on the trail just before they closed it down due to weather conditions.

That is still very sad , we have similar problems where I live . Tourists just see our beaches as beautiful golden sands and deep blue waters. Most of them have no idea of surfcraft or the dangers involved. They don't understand the dangers of sunburn and heat stroke and most despite warnings in most languages on beach signs don't understand the requirement to only swim in patrolled areas. Unfortunately they want to experience the best of our paradise and they want to do it in their own way. I have personally experienced the grief of overseas tourists as their loved ones are pulled lifeless from the surf. I have no doubt it is the same where you live. If you understand the country and how it reacts to different weather conditions you stand a chance. We had a sad occurrence some years back when a school group went to Tasmania for a caving excursion. There was a cloud burst and the cave flooded. Very sad when it happens. Ron.

Understanding the country and how it reacts to the weather might have saved the hikers lives, and yes, it is sad. The vehicles that were swept away, there was just no way to anticipate that, it was just a fluke of nature. I'm sorry you experienced what you did in the beautiful waters surrounding your little paradise. It is a shame. Hopefully tho, the sun shines more than it rains. God bless all who have to endure the tragedies that mother nature puts out there.
