Hahaha nice. Thanks, that was my laugh of the day right there!

On a ore serious note, here's a shot I got last night when I went to the lake to take a swim and cool off:

Thanks guys, as always! <3

Someone saw me taking that photo at the lake and said I should talk to the local photographer and see if he needs any help.. she also suggested I print some of my work and show it to other photography shops in one of the cities.. :ycool:
Curious question: How much would you pay for that latest sunset photo?

Photography doesn't pay that much on a local scale. Photojournalism can pay a pretty penny even for a bigger, yet local, city magazine or newspaper. But you really have to start building a portfolio in order to get decent work. You should have prints made of your hobby work and ask around for "grunt" photography jobs. Like taking photos in local hot spots for their use in print or online.

I was playing with a fast shutter speed and caught this at my sisters party for the 4th. The metering didn't work right because the child is blurry and everything else is clear but I like the idea of "motion" it gives off

Edit: I'm far from a professional photographer. I took 'em on a Kodak Easyshare.

All photos are welcome! I'm not a professional either. Just someone with a passion to capture life through photography since I can't draw to save my life.

@Pen - Actually I shot it at 1/4000th of a second so no need for a steady hand =) I also have image stabilization on that particular lens which helps out a ton when you're trying to get tricky shot like that.

The colors are gorgeous on this Lisa, very very nice capture.

Thanks Drew! Your picture is pretty amazing of the child, I could never do that haha. Nice shot =)

I have a couple from Sunday afternoon/night while fishing at the lake:

Oh my...for you guys as a friend on facebook, look at my latest photo album. you'll see the clouds which formed 3 funnels (one possible touchdown) that hit my town today!!

If you guys ever see stuff like that, be sure to take shelter instead of standing outside filming it (unless you are a chaser, of course). Some of my friends were angry that I didn't go into my basement :p. But it was worth it. I'd rather keep someone else safe than stay safe myself! If it wasn't for me, they probably wouldn't have issued a tornado watch.

I'm not sure if its my monitor or not but I see what looks like dust on maybe the lens of your camera Lisa on the photo of the lake. Maybe a quick spray with some compressed air but be careful it doesn't become liquid again and get on the lens! I've made that mistake before.

Its in the upper right quad. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just thought I'd point it out. I had the same issue with dust on the sensor and it only reared its ugly head when I was shooting a clear sky. Something about it showing up in the blue channels .. weird ..

Ya, it could have been something in the air too. I've gotten a couple of other pics with bugs in my way. Thanks for pointing it out though :)

Here's a few pics from Sunday night (taken at different times of the sunset until the last possible moment, pretty much!)

I love the last sunset one, I'm a sucker for that last bit of light if you've seen my sunset photos =) and the silhouette of the building is freaking sweet, love it love it love it!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you ! :)

That's the Parliament Building in Regina (here in Saskatchewan)...took it as I was going for a walk around the the lake around sunset on Thursday. Look up Wascana Lake, you'll find out some interest info :)

Get a camera - point and shoot.

But the best advice I ever got, and luckily it was when I first started out, keep only the very best shots and throw out the rest. It is a great motivator. The other thing - take A LOT of photos. I mean hundreds and hundreds. I have thousands and thousands, and that is just the decent to awesome photos I kept.

I agree with Isla, except I keep every photo as I use them as a learning experience, what didn't I like about it? What could have I done differently or better?

I don't know, don't ask me Drew it's the inside of YOUR head. Geez.

Thanks Isla and Drew...I'll take your advice and just get out there and start shooting! Any advice in what camera I should invest in. I will use the one I have to start, but have been wanting to get a new one....all I have now is a cheapy one that isn't even digital.

Well you have plenty of choices, it really depends on what features you want and how much you're willing to spend. You can get a nice point and shoot camera for around 200 or step up to an SLR camera for around 500.

Howdy strangers. I finally got a new camera (after 23 days without my broken one), so walking from class this afternoon I finally got the chance to test it out. Let me know if you like 'em!

Yep I found time in between reading 4 textbooks and doing 2 assignments ;).

Glad you liked them..as you can see, fall is coming

Awesome shots Lisa. What camera did you end up getting?

Well, I was able to get a free upgrade with the closest similar in features/MP (otherwise I'd have to pay). So now I have a Canon Powershot A590 IS

those trees are going to be so pretty when they all turn colors.... you'll have lots of opportunities for awesome pictures!

This weekend I'm going home, and if weather is nice enough I'll be hanging out at our farm all day sunday..now THAT will be some photogenic opportunities there. So pray to the weather gods for me :p

Darn Benson, I was so hopeful :p

I am a weather goddess according to my fellow stormchasing pals..but only for winter. haha

Nice pickup Lisa. You got image stabilization now yay! I read you can add other lenses to it as well, very nice and it has a manual mode woo woo!

Yep according to the manual, you can add 3 lenses onto it :).

Yes, image stabilization. And I am going to have fun with the HI ISO setting. Are you familiar with it?? It's the motion detection. Can't wait til next years storm season. I am going to get some killer lighting shots.
I played with the "sunset" setting last night before class, here's something i managed to get:

n655785264_4257143_6697.jpg

Even better, I took that with no flash..and look, for me being a very shaky person, it's clear :D

btw Drew, not sure what these are exactly, you would know haha. This is what I can add on:
Wide Converter WC-DC52
Tele-converter TC-DC52A
Close-up Lens 250D (52 mm)
which require a Conversion Lens Adaptor LA-DC52G

As promised, photos from the farm today. More to follow tomorrow ;) (P.s.: all these were taking tripod-less! :))

Great pictures! I love the sunset one, such beautiful colors. I just bought a Canon SD1100. Good to know others are happy with their Canons, wasn't sure if I made a good choice or not. Almost bought the A590. Will post after I experiment with it a bit. Wish I lived near the wilderness...I live in total suburbia.

Hi ISO sucks IMHO unless you're tnight shots with very little lighting, unless you're looking for a grainy image. The higher the ISO, the more grain you introduce into the image.

As for the lenses.

Wide angle will allow you to shoot, well wide angle, it will give you a wider field of view but objects will appear farther away then they actually are.

This was shot at 10mm which is considered "ultra" wide angle

Telephoto is the opposite, it's effectively an optical zoom without the need to actually "zoom" which is very nice as digital zoom SUCKS.

Close up is referred to as "macro" it enlarges a given object usually by a 1:2 ratio. So the object will appear twice as large as it actually is. You have to get up close to the object being shot, so its nice for flower and insect photography.

Thanks for explaining the lenses, Drew..
I was very happy that I was able to get those shots of the moose, finally! Normally using 8x zoom you'd never be able to even recognize what exactly I was taking a picture of.
Like I said, I am going to use the Hi ISO for thunderstorms and lightning only.

That is an awesome shot of the Moose Lisa. As far as High ISO goes, I wasn't trying to be mean =) If you use a higher ISO during the dark (when shooting lightening) then you'll get the light blown out. You want to use something like ISO 400 at the most with a super fast shutter speed. I'll run out in the next couple nights and shoot some test shots to show you what ISO will do =)

Totally loved the moose shot.
I was gonna ask if you had megazoom...lol
My husband had a close encounter with a moose while he was hunting in Canada...it was a hilarious story, but it made me leary of moose....lol
I love photography, not that I'm any where near as good as everyone's pics on here but I appreciate the beauty.

Nah, I never thought you were mean, don't worry ;). Always value what you have to say!

And thanks for liking the moose. I seen a large bull with huge paddles today in pretty much the same spot, but he was smart and spooked easily..took off before I could get a pic!

Don't need to use a lot of zoom on animals that stand 7 feet tall :p

Close encounter, huh? Believe me, I had one last night with the 2nd moose. I was scared to walk over in that same direction tonight lol..I spooked him while he was bedding down, he stood up and was glaring at me. Then ran into the yard. I thought he was going to attack me haha.

It was the first time he was hunting in Canada, for deer. He heard, what he thought was a deer grunt. He then proceede over the hill, in the early grey hours of the AM. Just as he crested the hill....there was a massive moose!
The moose snorted and my hubby nearly pooped his pants....lol

Haha..and I'm sure he just loves it when you share the story lol
I don't blame him..if I had never seen a moose before I'd be scared, too!

Thanks, Jeff!
I thought the 'pink' clouds were pretty awesome too, fall time rocks! :) That sunset was the blessing after a very very cold afternoon.

Those pics are beautiful Drew, have no fear in your ability to see a good shot... its obviously very keen. I have a few myself that Im proud of but I have to be honest- they are mostly amazing scenery around Florida... anyone with a working camera could take the same pictures! I've contemplated going to photography classes because I'd love to learn how to take artistic studio portraits.
To answer your question about "what we do for fun" ...I paint alot. I love painting for some reason, even if my artwork isnt picasso worthy. I usually buy boxes, clay sculptures (or whatever they have that can be painted), paint by numbers, or the occasional blank canvas if I have a good picture in mind. Concentrating on the colors and brush strokes really helps take my mind away from everyday issues (and pains). I give away most of the stuff I finish... people are usually amazed at how good my paintings are but most of them dont really know how simple a paint by numbers project really is (as long as you can stay in the lines) lol =) I also read alot... I'm a library junkie. I can spend 2-3 hours walking up and down the isles in a library picking out books on any subject that intrests me or even a subject I'd like to know more about... go home and soak them up like a sponge. The best place to do that is in a bubble bath (or a dead sea salt bath- ALL crohnnies should invest in sea salt it works wonders for butt soreness and muscle aches) with some aromatherapy candles lit. That really helps me if I'm feeling like crap.

it's GLOWING. i almost didn't realize it was a parking lot! i love it!

Thanks :D

Yup parking lots are all you can see in this city...almost. I just try to shoot above them if possible, haha.

Here is a high ISO shot, somewhat grainy due to the ISO being so high.

Low ISO show, not as much light but no grain.

This thread has really changed how I look at the world. I take a LOT of pictures, but more for keeping memories of the things we do, and times in our lives. My pics almost always have people in them with backgrounds as the second thing. After looking at some of these pics, I've been trying to picture everything I look at as a picture. It's really cool to see things so differently, so thanks everybody for that.

Fellow photographer

Hello,
I'm new to this forum, and was happy to see a photography thread!
I'm a graphic designer and photographer. Crohn's has been a roadblock, but
art and photography always manage to make me feel better.

my portfolio is here for any who care to look:
http://www.cloverscritters.com

My favorite things to take photos of are my iguana and tortoise,
and my MINI. :)

turkjackclover.jpg

@ Cassie ..

Awesome Iguana!!!
@ MBH

Photography changed me in that way as well. Everything becomes framed now to see what kind of image it creates.

Okay - now I need help.
I finally figured out how to find my pics and click the attachment button, but now the first pic I tried to put on said it exceeded the limit.
The limit is 39.1KB and my pic is 271.8.
The next one I tried was 1,006.3KB, too big again.
Any tips? How can I not upload one stupid picture? (Yup - gettin' mad here)
How are the pictures too big? What can I do?
If it matters, they are JPG.

Wow pretty cool guys. So nice to share our talents!

I have the D50. Here goes for dumb questions . . .How does flickr work? can you limit who sees your pics? I see I can right click and save your pics ( not that I would . . .) but I dont want others to be able to do that with mine :p I am ify about putting my pics online, well anything really. It is amazing that I am even part of this forum!
Thanks

I tried to add pics to this thing but I have no bloody idea! techno-peasant! URL ??? I need an attachment icon!
I cant even post a clear avitar pic! I give up for today !

You need to host the image somewhere like Flickr and then you click the little mountain icon and put the URL of the image in the box that opens up and the image will show up, so you don't have to attach it. The size limit is for Avatars only.

This is a butterfly that landed on my daughter's leg. If I remember correctly, the wings are blue when it is opened up. Too bad it didn't do THAT while it was sitting there.

Though it's blurry, this is one of my favorite pictures.
It's of my daughter in the tub. She's licking her lips and I love the way the water makes her lashes elongated.

Thanks Drew for your help - I finally got it!

Here goes, I still can not get the avitar to upload a clear pic, my problem is I dont have "another" place like flickr where my photos are stored.

Rrrraaahh! Did not work! tired the mountain thingee. Will try again later, got a course to go to.
H

lovetotravel,
I just signed up for a Flickr account on Saturday. It's free and easy.
It's SO easy to get your photos uploaded there if they are already on your computer. Once they are on Flickr you have to click on the picture, then click all sizes, chose your size (I changed it medium for 2 of mine and was able to keep it on large for another one.) right click on the SECOND link to copy it, (it should have jpg or something similar at the end) and then you click on the mountain thingy (insert image) and paste the URL into the box when it asks you for it.
Your avatar does look clear, it's just small.
If I can do it, anyone can.
Good luck!

I blame my mom, her fear of that movie and what she did when a bird got in the house I think made an impression on my fragile mind.

Okay - this isn't a great picture by any means, but it is just a freak show.
My already skinny son is trying to look even skinnier at the beach.
It makes me laugh because he's such a goof!
