Sandy, yes, that's how I knew Lily was sick in the first place - I didn't know what was wrong, but she didn't want to eat her dinner, and that was a major red flag for me. She had a few other symptoms as well, including extreme lethargy (she was almost collapsing), heavy panting, and pale gums - and then in the car on the way to the emergency vet, she started groaning in pain. It turned out that a tumor had been "silently" growing on her spleen, and it grew so large that it ruptured and started bleeding internally. It wasn't until it started bleeding that she had any symptoms, and by then unfortunately the cancer had already spread to other organs (they did biopsies on her organs when they had her opened up to remove the spleen & tumor and stop the bleeding). Apparently that's how hemangiosarcoma typically presents in dogs, too - internal bleeding (presenting by collapse, pale gums, heavy panting, etc) is usually the first symptom, and by then it's almost always terminal. So yeah, she nearly died then because of the bleeding. The surgery bought her roughly 3 months, that's given us time to spoil her and come to terms with things as best as we can. So, I know that it's a major red flag if she doesn't want food. I also check her gums regularly to see if they look pink or pale. The vet said that the internal bleeding may come back, as that's common with this type of cancer. Ugh.
But yeah, anyway, since she's recovered from her surgery, she's got a ravenous appetite. I go home at lunch daily to check on her, feed her, let her out to potty. Her habit is, she'll eat her lunch, then look to me to see if she can get any more food.
Today she ate her lunch, and then walked up to the open fridge and stuck her head in as I was getting my lunch. I gave her a handful of green beans as I was making my lunch and she happily chomped those down. She's also getting a lot of pureed pumpkin, plain yogurt, and sometimes dog ice cream (which seems to be beef broth & goat milk, frozen). She will eat and eat and eat and eat! She's gotten so fat, ha ha. But I'm happy she still has an appetite, so I indulge her. And sometimes way over-indulge her.
