What is YOUR weather like today??

3c and cloudy.Low temps and snow from Siberia on its way by tomorrow.BUT it will not be anywhere near the snow and temps in Canada so I won't complain.Ron,you can knock points off for that,it's worth it. (not complaining on the weather whingers thread, that is)

So when is the best time to visit over there would you say weather wise, if I went crazier and did a backpack hiking trip? I've been doing a lot of walking and haven't even used my wheelchair since my liberation....he had a tendency to want to have me use it more than I should have. I'm really needing to plan for other things in my life and I really want to go visit there and Scotland and Ireland. I can fly free into RAF Menwith Hill base and thought why not. Have you ever stayed in a hostel over there? Yep preliminaries, what route would you go or things that are a must see that guide books don't talk about. Sorry just trying to pick your brain. :)

Jane, best time is May-June although it does warm up more in july-Aug.But our weather cannot be relied on,ever. Not hostel since I was A youngster, but there are plenty, also Bed & Breakfast are very popular but have to be booked well in advance, usually. Our part of the UK,Northumberland coast,Central and Highlands of Scotland are magnificent, lots of open space, castles, wildlife etc.We were caravaners for 35yrs,so have covered most of north of us.South has a lot going for it too,but lots of motorways and traffic.Google YHA,Youth Hostel Association to start with.Hope mum and babe are doing ok.

PS.Try Scottish Tourist Information.Hubby says they might send you loads of info.I c an't help with Ireland though.

1c and awaiting Beast from the East. While having a cuppa in bed we were counting snowflakes, one at a time, but it has stopped now....I can'r bear the anticipation !!!

looking out my window to the Montville range, it is around 9.30pm and there is a vigorous front coming up from south. The range looks like it is on fire there is so much lightning. I checked the radar and it looks like it has some really heavy rain with it. More flooding.Ron.

Its undeniable but spring is knocking, but it is far too early. If we get into the melt it will be a very long spring as it always gets cold again after an early warm up. Nothing worse than losing the snow only to have cold weather return and have the trails down for the season. 2012 was like that, not fun stuck in the house when I'd rather be ice fishing or skiing at that time of year.

-12 this morning. Seems warm to me now, after that real cold weather we had. I have been outside in shorts grabbing firewood, still need a down jacket though. I must look funny, but I really don't care how it looks. My legs are rarely bothered by cold at all. LOL

A good covering of snow fell during the night but it's melting fast now (10am)
We're expecting it to worsen each day until the weekend with -5c wind chill here on the east coast and -15c on the hills. Not bothered one bit,got heating and a huge pile of books,so I'm happy.....I expect the roads and transport are in chaos again.

Because of my bag I am the same way. I live in my housecoat and barefeet. Its not uncommon to find me outside at the height of winter gathering wood from the pile in slippers barefeet and the housecoat. I'll shovel off the deck and walk out to the outhouse that way too.

In spring and summer when cutting firewood I do it wearing only a T shirt underware and a leather apron. Its the only way I can do physical work without pulling the bag loose and causing rashes in that area.

Mild -5 sunshine

The Beast from the East landed with a vengeance yesterday evening. We had a horizontal blizzard for two hours and strong whistling wind during the night.Short sharp snow showers now and minus 2c but colder with the wind chill. It's been perhaps 20-25 yrs since we have seen the like.....Of course I'm much too young to remember but the old folk have told me.hahaha.
Chris and Buff.I was going to ask for pics of you both in your "winter" attire, but had second thoughts.

Minus ten points for telling blatant fibs (only subtle fibs allowed). getting very hot and humid again, temps in the low thirties with humidity in the high sixties. Saw my nephrologist today. he agrees I have atrial flutter and atrial fib but he is not happy with warfarin. He wants to put me on one of the newer anti coagulants that operate thru a different process than suppressing the vit K receptors in the liver. He said warfarin can cause serious calcification of the arteries and that Vit K was too important at my age and state of health to be removed from my diet( and I won't need stupid inr tests all the time). He has not decided yet which drug I will be on , he will talk to my cardiologist first. Ron.

He seems to know what he's talking about and seems to have your best interest in mind.Let's hope he comes up with something that agrees with you soon Ron.It's a constant battle for you eh?

Quite a few snow showers so far today and a flash of lightening and rumble of thunder.
The country has ground to a standstill as I new would happen. We walked into town and I was quite comfortable and warm.Didn't want to risk the car even though it was built for this weather.(Volvo).To many nutters out and about.

Ah, someone has been hiding you all from me. No notifications again. Hmm. Well, beastie arrived this afternoon and my evening class has been cancelled. Yesterdays was too. With those cancellations and the ones I have to cancel due to not getting out health wise I wonder whether it was worth booking onto them. Oh, well.

My sack of bird food arrived just on time. I'm so pleased. I have a Mrs Thrush come back. She's only ever here if it snows. Bless her. Can't believe how bold the Blackbirds are. They know I put food out for them and they are fluttering around me just waiting for it to leave my hands.

Just to make things worse I have no TV signal either. So a very quiet boring day. Am hoping to get out tomorrow for a final shop for lots of cat food and more different bird foods just to make sure as I intend on hibernating for Friday and thereafter until the snow clears. Pavements have turned to ice as have the roads. Scary stuff.

Roll on Spring, oh and Summer too.

Very hot and high humidity. Have had a week from hell at work. For two and a half months a bunch of squatters have occupied the office on the floor above the shop where I work. Their leader told a bunch or lies about running an art workshop there. There is a law for squatters rights going back for over a hundred years. It has taken the building owners nearly three months and thousands of dollars to get a court order to have them removed by the police. There were around 16 people living up there , mostly drug addicts. We have been in a state of siege at work for weeks with the back doors locked. We have not allowed any customers to come in via the rear yard , it was just too dangerous. The police arrived with three wagons full of men and chucked them ot yesterday. The owners came in to board up the doors and whole panels ripped out or the back walls. They told us that there was two foot of rubbish covering the entire floor with layers of paper , food scraps empty alcohol bottles , maggots and syringes. They were putting down a new layer of newspaper each night so they were not sleeping in the filth . Half the police were nearly vomiting by the time they had searched the place. The stench has been horrific. Now it is over and the clean up continues. The stress levels have been severe for the three of us working there. I thought my boss was going to have a nervous breakdown . Why has life got to be so freaking hard. Ron.

Why do people have to be so filthy ? I'm not against homeless folk taking shelter in empty accomodation, offices, factories etc.but they would find life much easier if they considered owners and neighbours. And so would the neighbours.

Light snow flurries and minus 5c in the strong gusty wind today. We're having to feed out bigger birds 2-3 times a day.The little ones are back and forwards continuously to the feeders/coconuts.

-5 cloudy. Its a sad state of affairs, we have reams of homeless people, with more and more becoming homeless each year. I wonder how they survive the winters, but they do. In the country we don't see much of the problem, but in the urban areas they are found everywhere, some are very bold and will knock on the truck window demanding handouts, I keep on rolling and avoid stopping.

No snow since last evening, but no thaw either.0c here.Looks like the south is getting the hammer from storm Emma.Country still in melt down and the army has been draughted in some areas and people are panic buying food.No daily newspaper for me today, that's my only grouch.Hubby is going stir crazy (we were indoors all day yesterday) so we're going for a walk .The sea is quite rough and stormy, with huge waves pounding the beaches and defences.Always worth a look.

The snow has drifted and settled deeply in areas. I drove out yesterday and the wind was blowing the snow right over the road and causing visibility to be severely restricted. Drove slowly and carefully. I don't intend on going out today unless it's to feed those birds. Four Mistle Thrushes, along with plenty of Robins and loads of blackbirds, not to mention the Starlings en mass and those pigs the Jackdaws. Pond can't be seen as it's totally snowed over. Will have to get that saucepan of hot water to create a hole in the thick ice I think.

Strong winds here today

We have another rain event on the way. A low formed over Townsville and gradually moved inland . It has dropped over 450mm in two days in a lot of inland areas. It is now heading south east. Forecasters are saying it could be our worst outback flood in 100 years. It is expected to cross the coast in my area in a couple of days. More bailing . Ron.

@ Ron50, forget the bailing just buy an inflatable dingy. Same as a waterbed and you won't get wet. Seriously though, worst rain in 100 years. Sounds awful and I hope it misses you, Ron. You've had too much to contend with recently.

Hello to all you Brits! It should melt soon, ours is melting a little over here in Canada. I would love to see a picture sometime Carol, the view sounds splendid.

Lost my cat in the snow though I could see which way she went. She's back in now, cold pawed and eating like mad, bless. There are two older men in the street with shovels clearing the roads and pavements, me, I've used my dustpan to clear a space for the birds to feed. TV is on and off with reception very poor. Not thinking of going anywhere today. It's cold.

I don't have Mistle Thrushes after all, they're apparently Redwings. Well, haven't had any in my garden before.

0c degrees but not much has changed since y/day.Only short flurries of snow, but nothing has thawed and the sky has been the same oppressive grey for 3-4 days now.
On a positive note, a little bird has been singing it's heart out,so maybe it knows something that we don't.
D., are your fish OK ? No ice on our pond today and they're at the surface, although sluggish.

I'm going to have to clear the foot of snow before getting to the ice to check on fish and frog. Still no buses, eerily quiet out and no tv signal yet. Thank god for books and the internet, lol

Another hot steamy day. they are predicting another 100 mm of rain during the early part of the week and possibly more from severe thunder storms later in the week. Ron.

Was out looking for firewood and followed the neighbor's son's snowmobile trail down the lake and saw a lot of slush, before long I noticed that there was no support underneath the snowmobile as the snowpack was turning to slush all around me. There were some large thermal vents big enough to take down a snowmobile through the ice which is not uncommon when we get prolonged warm weather allowing heat from beneath the ice to melt up from below.

Rather than taking chances by making a loop turn I turned the snowmobile around by hand involving heavy lifting and headed straight back to the cabin, no looking back.
The small plane above watched me, perhaps thinking I had trouble as I had to take a few long rests between lifting and fighting the weight of the snowmachine. I kept moving as much as possible to let him know I was alright, and also didn't want to spend anymore time than I had to given how unstable the area was. I am not up to getting stuck alone and having to make long walks out of the bush anymore even though bush living is second nature for me. I just don't have the endurance anymore.
Another mild one near the freezing mark today.

I have always wanted some tv show to do a show on why people end up like this, squatting. Where is there family? What led them to this life? It's crazy. I felt like Charlie Brown...was too cold today taking grand daughters to park. They were running around with just a long sleeve shirt and I have ski shirt, vest, coat, hat....yep cold lately....wimpy me. :)

I know what you mean Jane. A big part of the problem where I live is meth amphetamine ( ice) . Ice addicts are dreadfully hard to rehabilitate and the paramedics don't want anything to do with them as they are too dangerous. Quite a few rental properties that have been used as Ice labs may have to be demolished. They have found it almost impossible to decontaminate them.
It is still pouring out west . The low is heading to the south east towards me. There are many children in western Qld who have never seen rain . The areas have been in severe drought for ten years. Now the problem for parents is keeping their kids out of the floods, Ron.

Wow that would seem crazy....Oregonians and Washingtonians have never seen sun lol. All our kids look like vampires haha.

It is a strange country. Our inland fish species do not breed every year. Oils from the trees and herbage settles into the soil where it forms new compounds. When the rains come these compounds are washed into the creeks and rivers and stimulates spawning in all of our inland fish. All of the rivers in the west flow south. Some eventually run into the Murray /darling system , our two largest inland rivers. The other rivers flow south west to lake Ayre which is a large salt lake and the remains of Australias ancient inland sea. It is incredible to watch the dry floods heading for lake ayre fed by rains hundreds of miles away. It is comparable to what happens in Africa in the Kalahari desert. When lake ayre fills the birds arrive to nest ,pelicans, herons, egrets and cormorants . Almost like magic fish appear in the lake hatching from eggs that have laid dormant for years. Ron.

2c and raining.BUT !!! the streets and roads have turned to dirty slush and I'm sure some drivers try to splash pedestrians deliberately, the swine......

The snow is melting here i'm pleased to say. We also have a ton of slush. Must say, I swear the birds are starting their Spring singsongs. Tis lovely. Am hoping my fish and Kermit are fine. Will clear the snow and ice off in a minute.

Hoping for rain today as there is supposed to be some along the east coast but i'm East Midlands so it might miss us. Just waiting to see if all my crocus and daffs have survived.
8 Redwings yesterday. They're still enjoying the free food. That much for them won't last though. They do a vanishing act at courting/nesting time, then come back when they want to feed their young.

Ron50, amazing some kids have never seen rain. Unbelievable.

Its interesting to hear about how different the environment is first hand around the world. A land of many different contrasts. Its been mild here and the lakes are very slushy, I have not skied in awhile as the snow conditions are not the best in mild weather, and I find it difficult to ski unless its cold.
Shifting gears, I dropped two trees, and the threat is now gone and will become firewood. That big pine was hollow at the base, and when it fell it seemed to keep falling forever being so tall. Down now, no longer a danger.

2c and warming up to a cosy 5 by lunchtime.Snow has gone from here on the east coast but some inland villages are still cut off.The roads are narrow and there have been 12ft drifts in places.

We had 50mm of rain last night. The forecast is for rain tomorrow and showers and storms for the rest of the week. Still pouring down in the west and MT Isa is just about awash they have had so much rain.Ron.

Still got some snow laying around. Melting fast now and hopefully we're getting up to double figures this week. When the sun is out its radiant warmth is very welcome. The fish seemed to have survived and I've dragged off the two inches of ice from the top of one pond, but can't manage the other yet. Few birds now and no sign of the Redwings. Hopefully we've seen the last of Winter.

Welcome Tinker, your weather sounds ideal.

Reached 6c and the sun came out for a short while.
The lunch time news reports thousands of sea creatures washed up on the beaches due to the storms.Star fish, razor shells, crabs and lobsters and no doubt sea birds and seal pups too.

Still a tad of snow to thaw despite the rain we had yesterday. It's nice enough out at the moment. Wet, but not windy nor too cold. Typical March I would say.

I watched videos on you tube about the massive sea life deaths. Very, very sad.

-15 Clear with a fresh wind. Snow pack has firmed up nicely and the lakes should to with the cooler more seasonal weather. With some new snow to freshen things up, I should be able to go skiing anywhere and stay up on top of the snowpack without being on the main trails.

Lovely and sunny this morning though I still have thick ice on one pond and I can't seem to clear it. Hoping the fish are still alive. Feeling more like Spring.

D., I think there will be a space between the ice and the water.
5c and sunny, but maybe showers lately. We've just put a nest box up for the blue tits. There seems to be an awful lot of them coming and going so hopefully some first timers will make use of it.

Still raining here and still belting down up north. Tulley had 390 mm in 24 hrs yesterday. There are a couple of possible cyclones forming on each side of the cape and there is another in the coral sea giving the poor old the islands another beating. We have had over 100 mm since Monday and more expected over the next few days. Ron.

Quiet over here by comparison, -10 with a dusting of snow. I'm going for a ski this afternoon. I saw on the news all the sea life that had washed up on the shores in Britain from the storm and some people trying to save a few fish. Pretty sad, but I guess its all part of nature's cycles.

Just got out the door for my creative writing class, got to the next village and had to turn around and come home. We all know why! Oh, well. Have to see if there's something on the TV. If not, it's books and the internet.
When the sun comes out I can feel its radiant heat. Doesn't last long, this is England, lol. Yeah, Carol, I just seen that Leicester and maybe more south, here for instance, may get more snow. OMG, if only we could happily describe it like Buff and the others over there. But no, we Brits must moan.

A light covering of frost early on but it disappeared quickly in the balmy 2c heat. There were three male robins squaring up to each other on the shed roof.Maybe the winner will get to use the nest box."our" gulls have started building their nest and there's some noise when intruders try to muscle in.It's only going to get worse, then "some" of the neighbours will complain. Why live near the coast if you hate sea gulls ? nutters !

It is funny in Australia everybody hates seagulls and crows. About the only problem I have with them Is they should both come with a volume control. Still pouring up north, more areas flooded. We had another 40 mm today. They found a mans body in a creek up on the range. They think he has been in the water since the heavy rain last week. Strange that no one has reported him as missing. Ron.

The birds are really starting to sing now. It's nice to be outside listening to them. Had a flurry of snow this morning, nothing settled thank god. Can't see Kermit anywhere, perhaps he's leapt out and gone off somewhere else. A better pond perhaps.

If he's a bachelor he could be off looking for romance D.
Maybe a bit cold for spawning but it won't hurt to see what's on offer.

-12 brilliant sunshine under blue cobalt skies. I stood there in the sun out by the outhouse this morning taking in the warmth of the sun upon my back in the soothing clean cold air. A moment. I had an amazing sleep last night I have not experienced in years. I woke up to daylight after sleeping the entire night without waking up every hour like I usually do. Well rested.
One thing I really like are the brighter mornings, early sunrises are my thing.
Ron we feel the same way about those crows and gulls, put a volume control on their beak and they would be fine.

We had a huge flock of Jackdaws coming in to roost every evening when it was getting dark at 4pm.Since the days have lengthened they've disappeared.?? There is the odd one or two coming for a feed but I don't know where the rest have gone.It got up to 6c today and the thermometer out the back reached 21c with the sun on it.It's going to be warming up in the next few days with low wind speeds so I'm going cycling before I stiffen up altogether.

C, all Jackdaws know I put loads of food out for birds. Word gets around, so now they're here. I heard on the news that cycling was very good for the immune system. Hopefully it's doing you some good.

Dull and misty start, a tad cold too. No hedgies for me yet although others in the village have spotted a few.

-5 and gray. I had a good day yesterday after having had that good sleep. Today nah, it was back to the standard tossing and turning all night. Sleep is such a fleeting thing.

We are getting heavy showers of rain every day. There is a lot of severe flooding in the north . Neither of the lows each side of Cape York developed into cyclone. There is still one out in the coral sea giving Vanuatu a hard time. we are getting some heavy ground swell from it but nothing else. Ron.

The thaw is on here, 6c currently. I'll be checking outside the basement door periodically to see if we need to pump any water. I have the pump at the ready, so its not a big deal.

Ron,didn't Vanuatu have big trouble last year ? I hope they have it easier this time.
Chris,Ron might want a loan of that pump
Ron,stay warm and safe....

6c+ here but wet, wet, wet.Enjoyed our peddle y/day,the air was amazing.Hoping to do it all again tomorrow.

It's wet and drab today. Carol, I was going to suggest the water pump was sent to Ron50, you beat me there.

Nipped out yesterday, still some snow mounds around. But it is warmer today and I have loads of daffs ready to come out and there are plenty of crocus up.

they are predicting another 60-80mm for us again this week. It is really bad around ingham and tulley in the north . Quite a few of the towns are completely cut off with some relying on army choppers for food . Ron.

-10 and clear. The intensity of the days are building and with the higher angle of the sun its biting into the snow. We have about a month left when I hear the reports of the melt going on further south and in warmer locals. One thing for sure, I will be glad to trade in my boots for flip flops.

Warm today, it is still freezing at night though. No pump needed yet, best wishes to you ron50. I hope you avoid any more serious weather problems, you could really use a break.

6c and rising to 9c later in the day (allegedly) Sun is making an effoert to comethrough the clouds but losing the fight.Still a good bike day though.

Looks like there may be another low developing west of the Solomon Islands in the Coral sea . The predictions have it moving south west towards the south east Queensland coast. It may or may not develop into a cyclone. If it fails to cross the coast we can expect very heavy seas and if it crosses very heavy rains even if it does not form a cyclone. It would be much nicer if it fizzled out. they were able to get into Ingham today , over90% of the homes have flood damage. Ron.
